Now, this week, the hotel officially broke ground on construction. Well, actually it was just a ceremonial groundbreaking since the hotel will be rise within the bones of the historic Old Post Office building.
Here's a snapshot of the Trump family of hoteliers--The Donald, Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump--along with DC dignitaries Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, Mayor Vincent Gray, D.C. Councilmember Muriel Bowser, and Norman Dong, Commissioner of the Public Buildings Service for the U.S. General Services Administration. Is it just us, or are those shovels plated in gold? #trumplyfe.

UPDATE: So not China.
Today, the Americas Lodging Investment Summit, or ALIS as it's called, kicks off in Los Angeles and it's where hotel operators, owners, investors and experts will be convening over the next two days to talk about, well, duh, the latest trends in the hospitality biz. (We're particularly interested in this session tomorrow: "DESIGNING HOTELS FOR THE MILLENNIAL GENERATION")
Big-time conferences like this are also prime opportunities for hotel brands to make some import ants announcements and we've already got word that Trump Hotels is one of them.
We hear the announcement will pertain to Trump's international operations and if we had to guess, we bet it's about China. Last year, Trump designated a VP of development of China and indeed, Ivanka Trump (#HCGirlCrush) posted something about a Beijing hotel and condo project on Facebook (check her schedule at around 3pm.)
Then again, Trump (represented by Donald Trump, Jr. who will break the news today) could have something totally off the radar to announce. Either way, we're excited. We're sure it's going to be the biggest and best thing the world has ever seen.

We're sure that Ivanka doesn't have to carry her own purse but, hey, lady's got a handbag line to promote.
Donald Trump is finally getting his name on a Pennsylvania Avenue property. No, not the White House, but close: the Old Post Office.
Earlier this summer we told you that Trump had reached a 60-year lease agreement with the U.S. government allowing him to transform the Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C into a luxury hotel.
Yesterday he and his daughter Ivanka, sons Eric and Donald Jr., D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray, congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and members of the D.C. Council came together in the Old Post Office to celebrate and dish the details of the $200 million redevelopment of the iconic building.
When the Trump International Hotel, The Old Post Office opens, hopefully in late 2015, it will be the first luxury hotel to have been built in D.C in 15 years. Super luxe yet sensitive to the history of the 1889 building (which has survived two attempts to tear it down). "We promise not to disappoint you," said Ivanka, adding that her father "is no stranger to historic preservation, and understands challenges and responsibility of dealing with a building of this caliber."
Donald Trump has finally scored big in the nation's capital. It's not the White House, but it's pretty damn close -- two blocks to be exact.
Last week, Trump reached a 60-year lease agreement with the U.S. government that will allow him to transform the Old Post Office Pavilion on Pennsylvania Avenue into a 260-room luxury hotel. Currently, the building is used as Federal office space and its tenants are in the process of being relocated. If all goes according to plan, construction should begin in 2014 with a target opening of 2016. The property will be called Trump International Hotel, the Old Post Office, Washington, D.C.
Aside from its beautiful appearance, the best trait of the property might be its location between the National Mall and Capitol, which will attract both business and leisure travelers. The design plan calls for in-house restaurants, spa, conference facilities, and no shortage of penthouses and presidential suites. The all-glass annex inside the building will also be redeveloped, either into new retail stores or conference space.

If you're planning on visiting Toronto in the new year, you've got a new luxury hotel to consider--The Trump Toronto.
The latest biggest and bestest Trump hotel has just announced that they will open on January 31, 2012. It will be the only luxury hotel in the city's Financial District. And the rooms sure do look pretty! Perhaps because they were inspired by some luxe items--champagne and caviar. No, for real. The press release actually said that.
Since we love the bubbly (caviar not so much), we're curious as to whether or not the rooms will have champagne prices. We tried to use the hotel's convenient Facebook booking app, to suss out the room rates on opening night but an error message kept appearing. But no worries, the hotel's website was working just fine and we found Superior King rooms available for $495 CAD (or about $488 in USD) on January 31st. Sigh. We've got champagne tastes and a mid-service budget.
This should probably read..."Nobody put the pregnant woman in the room across from the elevator."
Having just been through this whole pregnancy adventure ourselves, we were relieved to see Ivanka advocating simple but important amenities--not frivolous ones like baby bump facials for an additional cost.
At the top of her list was a plethora of pillow choices. Very necessary since a pregnant woman likes to sleep with a minimum of three pillows every night. Minimum. Ivanka also recommended hotels offer up massages (both foot and prenatal), extra munchies in the minibar, lots of hydrating drinks from water to fresh fruit juices and to keep the rooms cool (very true, as this was one of the few times in our life where we didn't turn off the A/C upon entering a hotel room.)
But here are a few other hotel perks we enjoyed during our pregnant hotel stays (we stayed in about 16 hotels over nine months) and a few amenities we wished some hotels had:
We caught the news about the new Trump Toronto last summer when the least annoying Trump—Ivanka—TwitPic'd photos of herself in hard hat and swish navy-and-white dress inspecting the site. But now word comes that the hotelier, spa visionary, occasional model and handbag designer is pushing south of the border too with a 364-room, 70-story, $400 million building in Punta Pacifica, Panama City, Panama.
The first 15 floors feature a casino, restaurants, spas, shops and Bay Loft apartments; hotel rooms and residences both start on the 16th floor.

Jewelry designer, handbag designer, sometimes model, newlywed, television star and hotelier. My god, we couldn't be more jealous of Ivanka Trump's titles. And if there's one thing Ivanka loves just as much as her new hotels, it's posing in them avec hard hat while they're under construction.
Last year, during the building of the Trump Soho, she donned a swingy red dress to give us a sneak peek into the space and this year, she's doing a navy-and-white nautical thing for a TweetPhoto in the construction of one of the hotel floors of the Trump Toronto.

The first phase of the hotel's $30-million renovation is complete, with the new-look rooms now open for business. The remaining half of the rooms will start getting their overhaul this weekend.
Like Trump Soho, the look is clean, classic but modern, and has been driven more by Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric than the man everyone calls Mr. Trump himself. (He did, however, insist on a few specific amenities. You can see which ones in our photo gallery...)

Celebrities are known for demanding the very best (and bringing out the very worst) in hotels around the world. This week we’ve been uncovering a few of the most outrageous requests divas like J-Lo and Justin Timberlake have made during recent hotel stays.
So it only makes sense that some of these needy nabobs think they can go into the hotel business for themselves. And sure, sometimes it works out (see Gloria Estefan below). But other times? Not so much (see Jay-Z).
We thought it would be interesting to update our Celebrity Hotel Report Card. Especially given the news that set the blogosphere atwitter last week: that Posh Spice was offered $40 million to design a hotel in Dubai!
For more about which celebrities are looking to conquer the hospitality industry, read on!
Now that Ivanka Trump has gone and got hitched, she’s trying to entice everyone else to tie the knot, too. As you may know, aside from being executive vice president of development and acquisitions for The Trump Organization, Ivanka has her own line of baubles, Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry, which has a store on Madison Avenue. And The Don’s girl obviously learned something about synergy, because she’s just announced a promotion that marries (har har) the Trump hotels with her diamond rings.
Customers who buy a ring from Ivanka’s Bridal Bar will also score a three-course champagne dinner and a night in a Trump hotel in Manhattan. Sounds like a neat little proposal package, sure, but we’re going to stop short of calling this promo a “deal.” According to the New York Daily News, the sparkers in Ivanka’s line start at $15,000. We’re pretty sure you could hit the Diamond District and get a ring for a lot less—and still have some cash left over for a night at the Trump International Hotel & Tower (where rooms start at around $595 a night) and dinner at Jean-Georges (there’s a prix-fixe menu for $98).
