Even the Isle of Man Has a Grand Dame Hotel, The Sefton
Do you judge hotels by their coveror rather, their facade? We kind of admit to it, thus our immediate infatuation with the the historical hotel The Sefton, a classy grand dame that holds court on the main promenade in the city of Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man.
Yes, that Isle of Man. The one that sits in the Irish Sea between Belfast and Blackpool, that prints its own stamps and pounds sterling notes (and coins!) and hosts a motorcycle race every year. That Isle of Man. Who would have guessed it also had hotel properties like this? The Sefton is a truly British place, with a winter garden, chintzy rooms and proper afternoon tea that even brings in the locals on special occasions.
Typically the hotel (and its rooms from 90 GBP per night) host English tourists out for a weekend break from the middle of Britain, but the Sefton was also the site for several of the island's meetings of its own Congress. You see, the Isle of Man is a "British Crown Dependency," meaning it can have its own government but it still defers to good ol' England for things like defense and international representation. You won't get a passport stamp upon arrival to the island, but you will be able to send a postcard with a totally different stamp and postmark from those you'd get back on mainland. And that, dear readers, is just one tiny great reason to visit. Trust us.

All this week, HotelChatter contributor Eric Rosen will be taking us on a guided tour of the globe’s most exclusive, luxurious, over-the-top vacation retreats in our new Private Islands Series. We’ll venture from the Bahamas to Fiji, from Africa’s crystalline Lake Tanganyika to the emerald waters of Cambodia, and everywhere in between. All good things must come to an end, and so it is with our exclusive series on Private Islands. We’ll be headed back to our usual coverage of run-of-the-mill hotels, but before we do, we’re casting away to a tiny coral cay on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef called Wilson Island.

Saint Lucia's Hotel Chocolat: Not Made of Chocolate, but Surrounded by It
We have a confession to make. Just over a year ago, while on a visit to the Fond Deux Cocoa Plantation Hotel on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia (see those awesome pics here), we inadvertently trespassed on the edge of a new hotel property. Don't worrya guard stopped us after emerging from a gingerbread-looking guardhouse. Where the heck were we? As it turns out, it was the Hotel Chocolat, which just opened February 28.
The Hotel Chocolat isn't so named because it sounds pretty; the place is high up on the island, within the actual chocolate-producing, 18th-century Rabot cocoa estate. The hotel was constructed here because its British owners are themselves crazy for the stuff, and manufacture a brand of chocolate already named Hotel Chocolat. This then is the embodiment of their dream, and guests are of course invited to learn from and participate in various chocolatier activities.

My Own Private Island: Fijian Fun on Laucala Island
Where: Fiji

All this week, HotelChatter contributor Eric Rosen will be taking us on a guided tour of the globe’s most exclusive, luxurious, over-the-top vacation retreats in our new Private Islands Series. We’ll venture from the Bahamas to Fiji, from Africa’s crystalline Lake Tanganyika to the emerald waters of Cambodia, and everywhere in between. That is, everywhere you can be ruler of your own little island.
Our next island isn’t actually an island you can rent out completely—unless you wanted to spend your entire trust fund, and those of your extended social network—but we thought to include it since, to even get an invitation to visit, you have to fill out an application and be accepted. It is, however, a private island owned by a single person…upon which there’s a gorgeous, ultra-exclusive resort.
We’re talking about Laucala Island, just off the coast of the Fijian island of Taveuni. Yes, this is pretty much at the end of the earth, so it’s a rarefied environment with a rarefied clientele into which we imagine seamlessly insinuating ourselves. Fun fact: it’s also the largest private island in the southern hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean sacrificing privacy and discretion during a stay here.

My Own Private Island: David Copperfield's Musha Cay, the Bahamas
Where: Bahamas
All this week, HotelChatter contributor Eric Rosen will be taking us on a guided tour of the globe’s most exclusive, luxurious, over-the-top vacation retreats in our new Private Islands Series. We’ll venture from the Bahamas to Fiji, from Africa’s crystalline Lake Tanganyika to the emerald waters of Cambodia, and everywhere in between. Obviously we’re hotel folk at heart. We love checking out everything from the latest trends to how they’re stocking the minibars to the most fashionable uniforms, but even we have our antisocial moments…and in those moments, our minds drift to the various paradises of sumptuous solitude that we’ve come across in our reading: private vacation islands you can have to yourself. So come along with us as we sail from cays to atolls, and jet from secluded sandbars to isolated islets in our week-long series on Private Islands.
We begin our week with one of the most fabulous private islands in the world, and it’s actually close to home in the sandy atolls of the Bahamas on the private playground of no less an illustrious illusionist than David Copperfield! It’s called Musha Cay, and is in the secluded Exuma chain of islands, about 85 miles southeast of Nassau.

Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition Models Shacked Up at Maui's Grand Wailea
The Grand Wailea Resort in Maui is having quite the turbulent February. First, it filed bankruptcy and was bought by new owners, despite its almost $2 billion in debts, and then it was featured in the movie Just Go With It. There's even a contest open now to win a good vacation stay at the resort as a tie-in with the movie.
Finally, the Grand Wailea is again the center of attention, as today it was announced that it was the temporary Hawaii home of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue's bevy of models, stylists and photographers when they stayed in Maui to shoot the 2011 issue, hitting newsstands today. We've visited the Grand Wailea before and found it a bit too family-oriented for our luxury tropical relaxation tastes, but all those models and famous photogs could've shifted the balance for at least a weekend.

Inside The Bachelor's Valentine's Day Pad at the CuisinArt Resort on Anguilla
Where: Rendezvous Bay , Anguilla
A special Valentine's Day episode of The Bachelor, which of course aired last night, was filmed at the tony CuisinArt Resort on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. The hotel, a favorite of Michael Jordan, Derek Jeter, his girlfriend Minka Kelly and Oprah hosted Brad Womack, the easy-on-the-eyes love-seeking Bachelor, as well as six young ladies looking to be The One.
The two-hour long episode was filmed during the resort's annual closedown last year, so the man had the whole resort to himself to individually court each gal. It's no wonder he didn't pick a woman the last go-round in 2007. And while we think he was kind of a jerk to leave the women of that season hanging, with perks like this we'd be hesitant to get locked down too. Anyway, CuisinArt just introduced six private three-and five-bedroom beachfront and garden view villas, where the group stayed. We just happen to be here and thought we'd give you a look inside their very swank rooms.

'The Bachelorette' Takes Her Hostages, Er, Men to Tahiti

Ok folks, here's the deal. We have zero interest in "The Bachelorette" Ali Fedotowsky and her quest to find the man of her dreams. Call us jaded or whatever but we think "The Bachelor/Bachelorette" track record for "true love" speaks for itself.
However, we do get our kicks from the sexy destinations where the final rose ceremony goes down. Last season's "The Bachelor", found Jake and his girls in St. Lucia at two different romantic resorts and this season, Ali takes her beefcakes to Tahiti Hotels.
Everyone shacked up at the Hilton Bora Bora Nui (formerly a Starwood Hotel) but a few date activities were also planned at the nearby Le Taha'a Island Resort & Spa.
The scenes were shot in early May and according to the rags, Ali has indeed picked a poor unfortunate soul to torture fiancee!

Smooch Like 'The Bachelor' In St. Lucia With a 'Wings of Love' Package
We don't know about you, but the ABC Show "The Bachelor: On the Wings of Love" has us falling more in love with the romantic island of St. Lucia more than the hunky pilot who stars, and his three potential mates with whom he's traveled to this tropical place. Jake Pavelka, a pilot for Atlantic Southeast Airlines, is nearing the end of his reality television search for his love, and the cast and crew of the show have flown down to St. Lucia, known as a honeymoon paradise, for the final couple episodes
Amongst all the bikinis and sunset smooching, we get glimpses of Jake's fabulous "Fantasy Suite" at Jade Mountain Resort, which we visited ourselves recently. But on tonight's episode, Jake has his last-chance with Tenley at Jalousie Plantation, and the hotel has pulled out all the stops to recreate the romantic experience for you with a "Wings of Love" package.
