Making Sense of Hotel Scents: How Brands Woo You With Smell

March 16, 2015 at 5:13 PM | by | Comments (5)

Sniff, sniff. What's that smell? Keep reading to find out! Ever wonder if that hint of lavender you detect when you enter a particular hotel is a faint whiff of lovely perfume? Most likely it's not -- what you smell is the subtle odor of brand marketing. Yes, hotels brand get you with design and decor, but your nose also is enticed into brand loyalty.

This is how it works according to Heather Balsley , SVP of America’s Brand Management for InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) , who was kind enough to explain the process of scent selection to us.

Inside the Royal Suite at the New InterContinental Sydney Double Bay

Back in November, InterContinental Hotels reopened the former Ritz-Carlton in Sydney’s Double Bay as its second property in the city, following a multi-year closure and renovation of the hotel. Many a hotel in the central business district, including the ‘other’ InterContinental, can give you the iconic Harbour Bridge and Opera House views the city is famous for, but back in the day the likes of Madonna, Bill Clinton, and Princess Diana all opted to stay here instead. We wondered why, so we made the 15-minute cab ride to Double Bay and peeked inside the Royal Suite to find out.

Set on the hotel’s fifth floor, the Royal Suite is a one-bedroom suite with living room, study, bedroom, ensuite bathroom, powder room, dining room, pantry, and option for a connecting bedroom. The contemporary design really worked for us, with pale herringbone hardwood floors, white walls, and dark wood – but the real draw is in the direction of the light streaming in through the arched windows.

Where one door closes in the hotel world, another opens: Four Seasons may be leaving Thailand’s capital in a few months for a good three years or so, but a hop and a skip away from its current Radjadamri hotel, Hotel Indigo Bangkok opened its brand-new doors last Friday.

Above a rendering of the lobby of the 192-room hotel on Wireless Road, with soaring ceilings, funky furniture, and some serious chandelier action: one on the right, three above the bar at the far end, and one a floor up in what looks like a library-esque space.

Hotel Indigo Brings Its Pretty Guestrooms to Bangkok

If we think about it for a second, we’re surprised Hotel Indigo hasn’t opened in Bangkok sooner than it will do, just over two months from now: its funky vibe, eclectic design, and often very pretty guestrooms seem like a natural fit for the Thai capital.

From what we can tell, the hotel was originally planned to arrive several years ago, so perhaps the thinking over at Indigo was similar to ours, but February 1, 2015 January 8 it will be in the end. At least that’s the date from which you can currently make a reservation at the 192-room hotel on Wireless Road, across Lumpini Park from Sofitel So. Our first impression, based on the rendering above and some photos below, is certainly favourable, with hardwood floors, window seats, stylish furniture, and an overall look that has a hint of Indigo Shanghai to it.

Does the Hotel Indigo make us covet its guestrooms and manage to stand out in the Hong Kong hotel crowd? A HotelChatter Review

Guess the Hotel revealed! The blue staircase and blue pool did indeed belong to the Hotel Indigo Hong Kong, which is where we laid our head during a short stopover in the city. Hong Kong has an impressive hotel game, and our expectations were high given what Indigo pulled off further north in Shanghai. Read on to find out what we thought.

Hotel Indigo Is Coming to the Barbican London

April 9, 2014 at 8:56 AM | by | Comments (0)

London is trying to keep up with New York when it comes to the number of Indigo Hotels it has: the Big Apple might have already made it to a list of five (future) hotels, but the UK capital is right behind with now number four, in the form of Hotel Indigo – Barbican.

A new-built and due to open in 2016, the Indigo will sit nicely between the current hotel at Tower Hill to the east and at Paddington and Earl’s Court to the west (for a little more on the post-war brutalist architectural experiment that is the Barbican, go here).

The hotel will have 101 guestrooms, a gym, and a restaurant in the arched cellars of a former brewery. There will be 35 apartments and office space in the complex as well. We just hope there will be lots of covetable furniture, and that rates will stay below the £200 ($335) mark.

IHG Gets With the Program: Free WiFi to All Loyalty Club Members

March 27, 2013 at 12:32 PM | by | Comment (1)

File this under Best News We've Heard All Year. InterContinental Hotels Group has just announced they'll begin offering FREE HOTEL WIFI to all its loyalty program members, regardless of tier status. Previously IHG didn't have any free WiFi exceptions, even for the uppermost members of their program, leaving IHG loyalists to choose from either Hotel Indigo or the Holiday Inn Express brands, which offer WiFi as a standard amenity.

The new perk is part of the massive overhaul IHG is doing to Priority Club Rewards which will soon be known as IHG Rewards Club when changes go into effect this July. And this is for every IHG hotel out there--more than 4,600 hotels in nearly 100 countries and territories.

IHG said the reason they decided to offer free WiFi to members was due to a recent survey they completed which said 43 percent of adults would choose not to stay in a hotel that charged for internet. Um. Yeah. We've been saying that for years. No matter, the change is real and it's happening.*

Starting in July, Elite members of the loyalty program will be the first to get free WiFi. Then beginning in 2014, all members will get free WiFi. The reason for the staggering is not immediately clear but we're gonna hold IHG to this no matter what. No take-backs allowed! Now, who else will copycat, and offer complimentary WiFi for loyalty program members? Starwood? Marriott? Hilton? Hyatt? We're waiting...
