Is This The Real Reason Why Hotels Have Bad WiFi Connections?

November 20, 2009 at 5:11 PM | by juliana | 2 Comments

Porn jammers! Old men in the club! Fergie! Hotel Strikes!

It always seems that no matter how much Celebrity Scoop we write about in a given week, there's also lots more that we didn't have time to get to. So from now on, every Friday we'll be rounding up the week's Infamous Hotels. This weekly list will include hotels that celebrities visited (and it made the news) but also hotels that really up the "Eww" factor. This can easily done by manipulating the WiFi connection for guests.

The Sports Guy aka Bill Simmons recently offered up his take on Hotel WiFi after spending four weeks on the road promoting his new book. According to Bill, he stayed in nine hotels and all of them had wireless. (Hey that's an improvement from the past!) But he noticed that the connection was also worse at night than in the morning. We've noticed that too and just chalked it up to more people being in their rooms at night, doing work, surfing the internet, downloading episodes of "Glee" and the like. But Bill has a different and way better theory.

It's my belief thatcertain hotels scramble their wireless at night to discourage guests from surfing for porn. Why? So they will order adult entertainment from the hotel's pay-per-view system. I know ... it's dastardly. But if you're the hotel, why give the milk away for free when you can make people pay for the cow?

More importantly, would you really put it past them? This is the same business that built motion detectors into mini-bars; they're going to give up the in-room porn business without a fight? It's evil, it's desperate, it's despicable and brilliant. The Porn Jammer is my Great Call of the Week.

Well said, Sports Guy. Well said.

Smoking cigarettes! Robbery! Voyeurs! Hotels in Bad Conditions! Crazy Comedians!

This can easily be done with a guest who attacks the housekeeper.

· Four Seasons Los Angeles: K-stew lights up on the balcony of her hotel room. At least she went outside to smoke?
· Ritz-Carlton San Juan, Puerto Rico: A businessman is tied-up in his hotel room and robbed.
· Standard NYC: Man sexually attacks a housekeeper while Jean Paul Gaultier gets giddy about putting on a nudie show in his hotel room.
· Holiday Inns: 300 of these hotels need to shape-up or they will lose their status with Holiday Inn.
· The Four Seasons Atlanta: C(K)razy c(k)omedian Katt Williams was kicked out of the hotel after causing a "disturbance." He says he bought a penthouse from the hotel and rented out seven rooms for seven nights. He thinks the dismissal may have something to do with his burglary arrest earlier this week. Meanwhile, the hotel says they have no record of Williams staying at the hotel.

Strippers! Sex! Tell-All Interviews! Dead Bodies! Bad Rap Music Videos!

This can easily be done by have a decaying body in your hotel. Welcome to the dark side.

· St. Regis Atlanta: A stripper claims that she had "lots of sex" with actor Josh Duhamel in an $830-a-night suite here. The problem? He's married to Fergie of The Black-Eyed Peas. Both say the allegations are "absurd" but the pole-dancer passed two polygraph tests.
· The Gramercy Park Hotel: Rihanna has spoken out for the first-time about the horrible beating she suffered at the hands of Chris Brown last February. She did her sit-down interview with Diane Sawyer in a suite at the GPH.
· Gansevoort South: Someone keep Rick Ross away from Miami hotels for his rap videos. Here's the latest one, featuring Clipse.
· Radisson Paper Valley Hotel: Former hometown hero Brett Favre returned to Wisconsin with his new team, the Minnesota Vikings, and had to shack up in a so-so room in downtown Appleton like the rest of them.
· The Jane Hotel: Another reason to avoid hotels with SRO residents inside. A body at the Jane was left decaying for days, disrupting the um, sensory experience of one hotel guest.
