Maybe We Shouldn't Be So Jazzed About Keurig Machines in Hotel Rooms After All

April 3, 2014 at 2:41 PM | by | Comments (4)

A few years ago when Keurig machines started appearing in hotel rooms--we couldn't have more thrilled. At last! A quick and easy way to make coffee in our rooms without having to deal with an ancient coffee maker or fumble with those paper filters. But maybe this perfect cup of coffee wasn't as ideal as we first thought.

Today, Keurigs are very common amenities in hotel rooms as are Nespressos and other one-cup coffee wonders. But this article, published in 2012, has recently been making the rounds on the internet about the dangers of the plastic Keurig casings. Here's a snippet of the piece to get an idea:

So, we do our best to avoid putting hot beverages and food leftovers into plastic containers (glass, stainless steel and food-safe designated ceramics are much better choices.)

But now there are K-cups- a fresh cup of plastic, er- I mean coffee, brewed into your mug every day. Combine hot water temperatures and the acidic qualities of coffee and now there’s a chance to spike leaching and chemical contamination to new heights.

And, because K-cups can’t be recycled, there is no recycling code on them to even tell us which chemicals are in the plastic containers- their ingredients are completely hidden from consumers.

Whoa.

Starbucks' New One-Cup Coffee Makers To Be Placed in Hotel Rooms Next Year

March 28, 2011 at 11:55 AM | by | Comments (0)

Starbucks has announced that it will start selling single-cup coffee brewers next year, giving our beloved Keurig and Nespresso makers a serious competitor to contend with. The one-cup wonder will be sold in supermarkets and warehouse club stores but the product is also set to be placed into over 500,000 hotel rooms next year.

Unless you're staying in a mega convention center hotel that has a Starbucks in its lobby, your best hope for getting that brewed coffee perfection (seriously, we can never duplicate the brew correctly in our own homes) has been to hunt down the nearest Starbucks shop...and sometimes it's not so near. Thus a one-cup Starbucks coffee brewer in our hotel rooms will be an awesome amenity to have.

Nice Coffee Maker, Shame About the Location at Harrah's Ak-Chin

Aint nothing like a cup of coffee in the morning before you put your face on, which is why we were delighted to find a coffee maker in our room at Harrah’s Ak-Chin in Phoenix this week. Just one problem – it’s placed in the bathroom, and that’s every bit as gross as using the phone on the can, no?

Hygiene matters and torturously slow (albeit free) WiFi aside, we’re extremely pleasantly surprised by our room here. Having slept our way through most of the Harrah’s properties in Vegas, Tunica and New Orleans, we assume most standard casino rooms will be pretty grim, but this is actually pretty damn nice. Take a look.

The Viceroy Miami's Illy Espresso Machine Will Make You Happy Morning and Night

November 17, 2009 at 12:04 PM | by | Comments (0)

We are continuing to geek out over in-room coffee makers. Yesterday, we showed you how the folks Down Under do it and today we're including an in-room coffee maker that we forgot to include in our original round-up--The Illy Espresso machine at Viceroy Miami.

The Francis Francis X8 espresso machines from Illy are found in all rooms at the hotel and there is no grinding of beans or scooping of ground espresso to deal with here. Just plop in a pod into "Frank" (we can call it that, right?) and steaming hot espresso is yours in a matter of seconds. There is milk and as you can see, oranges to accompany your drink as well.

We actually used Frank in the evening when we arrived at the hotel to give us a quick jolt so that we could stay awake to do some work. And when we awoke in the morning, Frank was ready and waiting to serve us again.

The Richardson Hotel’s Nespresso Machine Helps The Down Under Jet Lag

Before heading to Western Australia last week, we heard that Aussies take their coffee very seriously. There’s a "cappuccino strip" (or several) of cafes in every major city, and each one of my hotel rooms would have a decent coffeemaker in it. One of them even had a deluxe espresso machine that would make a Starbucks barrista drool. Guess that's why Australians always seem so chipper.

However, the coffeemaker during a recent stay that really won out on the quality-of-coffee versus ease-of-use nexus was the one at The Richardson Hotel and Spa in Perth.

The Best of In-Room Hotel Coffee Makers

November 4, 2009 at 4:34 PM | by | Comments (4)

Not all that long ago, your choices for getting coffee came down to two options--one, order it up from room service at an insane price like $12 for small pot or get your hands dirty trying to figure out the mini-Mr. Coffee machine in your room.

The latter was always cause for frustration since we hardly know how to work our own coffee machine at 6am, let alone someone else's. Also, paper filters may very well be the devil's child and have you ever tried to get coffee percolating in a cramped bathroom? Heinous. Oh the things we will do for an early morning java jolt.

But then came the invention of single cup coffee which has made life easier not only for desperate housewives across America and the bored office employee at the universal afternoon break time of 3:30pm but also for us, hotel guests.
