Hyatt House Gets Into the 'American Made' Spirit with Martha (and Announces NYC Hotel Too)

October 30, 2013 at 2:49 PM | by | ()

Martha Stewart with Chris Walker, VP of Hyatt House.

We've been proponents of Hyatt's upscale extended stay brand,Hyatt House, pretty much since it was announced (the brand took over the existing Summerfield Suites and Hotel Sierras.) How could we object to stylish, comfy new digs and free WiFi? Yet while Hyatt House has been populating all over America, it's been missing from the big cities. But now we're can get excited about the Hyatt House coming to NYC's Chelsea hood in 2015.

Hyatt House made the NYC announcement last week alongside none other than Martha Stewart who has partnered up with the hotel brand for her new "American Made" program. Guests who stay at more than 20 participating Hyatt Houses will get tips on how to live like a local during their stay. Such tips include places to eat, shop and visit, all of which embrace Martha's "American Made" spirit.

While we think Martha might be more of Park Hyatt guest than a Hyatt House, she did offer up some packing tips that work for hotel guests of all classes. Keep reading to see what they are!

We were cruising through the middle of Old Town Scottsdale yesterday and lo and behold the Hyatt House logo jumped out at us. It was our first time seeing a Hyatt House in the wild!

As you may recall, Hyatt House is Hyatt's revamped extended-stay brand which has taken over all 38 of the Hyatt's old Summerfield Suites and 15 Hotel Sierras. Inside Hyatt Houses, guests can expect to find more home-like public spaces and guestrooms, a new lobby concept called The Great Room, a hotel bar called The H Bar and these awesome proprietary chairs that our designed with power outlets in the arm rests.

As of January 24, all of the old Summerfield Suites and Hotel Sierras have been officially rebranded, meaning they are now using the Hyatt House name and logo. But several of them still have to undergo service upgraded and remodeling throughout the year.

Hyatt House is Outfitting Their Chairs With Power Outlets (And Other Awesome Design Details)

October 13, 2011 at 2:45 PM | by | ()

Welcome to our newest new feature, Design Thursdays! Thursdays are now our day to focus on hotel design through photo tours, video walkthroughs and interviews with hotel designers. Got a cool hotel design story we should know about? Let us know!

Just a few weeks ago, Hyatt Hotels surprised us with the announcement of their new brand, Hyatt House, which they hope will reinvigorate their extended stay offerings.

Right now, all of Hyatt's Summerfield Suites and Hotel Sierra hotels are turning into Hyatt Houses with the service upgrade and remodels to continue throughout next year. The redesign aims to create public spaces and guestrooms that will be more home-like but at the same time, more social. (Don't worry, there's still free WiFi on offer.)

Judging by the renderings we saw after the announcement, we're sure that Hyatt House will thrill road warriors and extended-stay trippers, particularly with the revamped lobby henceforth known as the Great Lounge, but there's only so much we can learn from computerized graphics.

That's why we were happy to get the chance to speak with Michael Suomi, a principal at Stonehill & Taylor the firm that created the new Hyatt House concept and design. Two of the design firm's past clients are among our favorite hotels in New York--The Ace and The Crosby Street Hotel--which intrigued us even more. Big box brands borrowing from boutique hotels is nothing new these days but to do it for an extended stay brand? We could hardly contain our excitement.

So without further adieu, let's delve into the design details with Michael Suomi. And we never thought we'd say this, but the brand's new proprietary chair is totally worth this read.
