Langham And Hyatt Starting Caribbean Stampede With New Resorts

Do we need more hotels in the Caribbean? Langham and Hyatt obviously think the answer is yes, because our in-box was filled up with info about their new Caribbean hotels this week.
In Port St George in the Bahamas, the Langham gang are planning the Langham Place Resort & Spa Port St George as part of their plans to triple the number of Langham properties within the next three years. It's their first entrance into the Caribbean market but if they're going to reach that tripling goal, we can guess it won't be the last. The 224-room resort is due to open in 2013 and will be part of a fancy new marina development.

Hyatt Regency Mission Bay is Throwing Kids a Poolside Halloween Party
Instead of trick-or-treating in the cold, where your kid's forced to put a bulky coat over his adorable Transformers costume, you can spend Halloween with the fam poolside at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina, so you can get some sun in San Diego while you partake in spooky events.
This is the first time the hotel is getting into the holiday spirit with Halloween happenings. The hotel's three water slides will get a scary twist with haunted music accompaniment and creepy lights. While you're in the water, you can watch The Nightmare Before Christmas, which will be screened near the pool. There'll also be a "Monster Mash" hula-hoop contest and fireside stories as well. But it wouldn't be Halloween without some treats, so while you watch the movie, gobble on s'mores oozing with orange marshmallows and candy corn.

What's On the Block at the Andaz Liverpool Street?

In this regular feature on HotelChatter, we choose a hotel and take a look at what other businesses or buildings are on its block. Because what's close by is nearly just as important as what's inside the hotel.
Today it’s the turn of Andaz Liverpool Street, which was named this summer as the best hotel in the world for “party people”.
The official blurb says that:
Located adjacent to Liverpool Street Station, the hotel provides easy access to areas both in and around London, with good connections to the Eurostar terminal and all major airports, including a direct connection on the Stansted Express to Stansted airport.
The main attractions of Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tate Modern and Spitalfields Market are all within walking distance, and the shopping hub of Oxford Street only a 7minute Tube ride away.
So far, so boring.

Hyatt's Boston Hotels Create a 'Task Force' for Fired Housekeepers

Perhaps sensing that the outrage from the Boston community over the recent firing of longtime housekeepers would not die down, Hyatt Hotels has announced that they are putting together a "support plan" to help their former employees. The official statement from Hyatt:
We are announcing today the formation of a task force to provide additional support to the 98 Boston-area Hyatt employees affected by the recent restructionf of the hotels'housekeeping services. In support of their transition to new jobs, the program will include extended healthcare coverage and retraining assistance tailored to the situation of each individual.
Management and HR directors from each of the Boston Hyatt hotels will create and administer the program. Retraining is the main focus and health coverage will be extended through the end of this year (which is only three and a half more months). It was previously set to end this month.

The Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf Has Put Together a High Holy Days Package

Did you plan a weekend getaway to San Francisco without consulting your calendar, only to realize that you’re going to be in the city by the bay on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year? No need to repent your poor planning now that the newly renovated Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf is offering a High Holy Days promotional package for observant Jews who will be away from home during the holidays.

Boston's Hyatt Hotels Have No Love for Housekeepers

This bathroom will now be cleaned by outsourced housekeepers.
It's never easy for the hotel housekeeping staff. The things they have to put up with from us guests! But whether or not you agree that they should receive an extra tip for their work, you have to admit the latest news from the Hyatt Hotels in Boston is unfair. The Boston Globe reports:
Hyatt Hotels Corp. laid off the entire housekeeping staffs at the Hyatt Regency Boston, Hyatt Regency Cambridge, and Hyatt Harborside Hotel after the morning shift had ended on Aug. 31, citing challenging economic conditions, and immediately replaced them with workers from an out-of-state staffing firm. The housekeepers had been training those very workers, from Georgia’s Hospitality Staffing Solutions, who they were told would be filling in for vacations.
So basically, these housekeepers--some who have worked at the hotels for years--were asked to train their replacements without even knowing it. Not cool.

Living the Rock 'N' Roll Life at The Andaz West Hollywood

The West Hollywood drag of LA's Sunset Strip is synonymous with a frenzied rock 'n' roll lifestyle. This is the stretch of bright lights that The Viper Room and Roxy Theater call home, and where on any given night, well-heeled groupie types (or "Band Aids," as the Always Famous euphemism goes) can be seen wandering in droves toward the latest insider after party. We'll reserve judgment about the outfit choices we've observed.
The recently reinvented Andaz West Hollywood has long been a part of this local, life-on-the-edge culture, playing host to guests who have an appreciation of the Strip's late night hustle and hard cocktails. For this year's Sunset Strip Music Festival, which will be held from September 10-12, The Andaz has been named the host hotel and is offering discounted rates of up to 20% accommodations from Thursday, September 10th through Sunday, September 13th to mark the high gloss occasion.

Free Booze and Views of Johnny Depp’s House at Andaz WeHo
Last week, after we’d checked out the Chamberlain and the Avalon, we spent a night at Andaz West Hollywood. As devoted fans of the London branch, we were a little nervous. Would they have got rid of the things we love (like the stationery kits in every room and the free minibars?) Would they have developed a vibe-killing attitude?
We’re happy to report a no on both counts. The stationery kit is there, although it’s a bit more basic than in London – mainly a pencil and an eraser – and the vibe was smiley. Even the free minibar had more stash in it than those in the Smoke (although sadly, still no alcohol).

Checking In On the Hyatt Twitter Concierge
When the Hyatt Twitter Concierge initially launched, we weren't very quiet about our skepticism. After all, it was introduced to the world at the apex of the Twitter Revolution (a.k.a. the media frenzy in which more time was spent talking about Twittering than doing the Twittering itself) and it seemed like a bit of a goofy gimmick to get the big-box hotel brand onto the radar screens of the hip-and-trendies.
But now, a couple months later, it's lookin' like the concept is actually yes, you guessed it going pretty well. That is: people are using it. Not a lot of people, but, you know, people. Go figure.
A quickie look-see at the feed shows a pretty steady stream of answers to guests' questions and the account has just under 5000 followers (though we recognize that this doesn't really mean anything people don't really need to follow this account, especially since most of the updates are @'s to other Twitterers).
Do we think this is the future of concierge services? No, absolutely not. But we see a several-times-a-day rate of activity here, and questions about credit card payments, storing luggage at the front desk, pools and nearby attractions seem to be a bit more frequent than, say, the "thanks for your interest in what we're doing here" posts.

Go On Your Own 'Tour de Hyatt' With Park Hyatt's Bike Program
Next month, Park Hyatt hotels will be launching a "Bicycle Valet" program that offers free rentals for up to four hours. Surely you can picture the possibilities here: Perhaps a 'lil date action? Some picnic fun? Scenic tours of new cities? Some re-learning how to navigate the mean streets on two wheels after your twenty-year hiatus that you took when you grew too old to ride the bike with the pink tassels hanging off the handlebars?
Starting in August, guests at Park Hyatt properties will be able to hit up the hotel's concierge to get hooked up with a city biking map, a bike lock, a helmet, a kickstand, and even some bottled water.
Where your two-wheeled tours will be (i.e. where the participating Park Hyatts will be): Moscow, Sydney, Beaver Creek, Beijing, Toronto, Paris, Milan, Dubai, Mendoza, Goa, Hamburg, Zurich, Washington DC, Saigon, Istanbul, Seoul, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Chicago, Tokyo and Canberra.

Hyatt Regency O'Hare Is Not Your Typical Airport Hotel
More often than we'd like to admit, we've had to crash at an airport hotel and brave the sheets and the scuzzy bathroom for a few hours pre-flight, and each of those times we wish it had been as nice as the Hyatt Regency O'Hare Airport outside of Chicago.
First off, there's the free airport shuttle, but more importantly the hotel just completed a $64-million-dollar renovation which updated all 1,100 of their rooms and suites. Back in 2007 when the work began, the hotel was able to show off two new contemporary restaurants and a humongous conference center, but now the rooms also boast of fresh touches like 37” flat-screen LCD televisions, ergonomically correct workspaces, energy saving lighting, and plush Hyatt Grand Beds.
