Hotels for Plane Spotting: The Regal at Hong Kong International
Airport hotels get a pretty bad rap. Sure, there are the greasy, grimy ones, but we like to think that for every one of those, there's a perfectly clean business-friendly oneor, even better, an airport hotel with the luxury of an airport view.
All this week we've looked at a few of our favorite hotels for plane spotting.
Here's our final pick:
The Regal Hotel at Hong Kong International Airport.
If, for some reason, you can only give yourself to one airport hotel, then by god let it be the Regal at HKG. All of the previous hotels for plane spotting have nothing on the Regal, which sits right alongside one of the major runways. All that separates you from planes of exotic airlines taking off and landing is a street and a low, thin building.

Hotels for Plane Spotting: The Hilton Garden Inn at Frankfurt International
Airport hotels get a pretty bad rap. Sure, there are the greasy, grimy ones, but we like to think that for every one of those, there's a perfectly clean business-friendly oneor, even better, an airport hotel with the luxury of an airport view. All this week we'll be taking a look at a few of our favorite hotels for plane spotting.
Today: The Hilton Garden Inn at Frankfurt International Airport.
Not only is this hotel brand-spanking-new, but it has something others don't at FRA: affordable rooms with a view of the runways. You see, the Hilton Garden Inn sits within a shiny new building called THE SQUAIRE, full of offices, shops and even an international railway station. There's also a Hilton in the same complex, dead next to the Garden Inn, but having been to both we say go with the Garden Inn.
Anyway, let's get to the plane spotting.

Hotels for Plane Spotting: The Renaissance at London-Heathrow
Airport hotels get a pretty bad rap. All this week we'll be taking a look at a few of our favorite hotels for plane spotting.
Today: Renaissanceat London-Heathrow Airport.
Full disclosure: Though we haven't yet stayed at the Renaissance, our usual choice of the Sofitel has just been switched thanks to an ad in Airliner World magazine, where the Renaissance advertised a Plane Spotter Package. That's right; they know exactly who'll pay good money to hang out at the airport and not be traveling anywhere. This is why they absolutely deserve a nod in our plane spotting series.

Hotels for Plane Spotting: The Westin at Detroit-Metro Airport
Airport hotels get a pretty bad rap. Sure, there are the greasy, grimy ones, but we like to think that for every one of those, there's a perfectly clean business-friendly oneor, even better, an airport hotel with the luxury of an airport view. All this week we'll be taking a look at a few of our favorite hotels for plane spotting.
Today: The Westin at Detroit-Metro Airport.
Detroit-Metro Airport (DTW) consists of two terminals; this is important to know because they're far apart, with separate freeway exits and everything. For plane spotting, you'll want to hit up the larger, newer of the two: McNamara. At the center of its 70+ gates is the Westin, with easy access to the in-terminal tram and its own TSA security lane and everything. It's pretty nifty.

Today: The Hilton and the Ibis at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.
Kicking off this week is a double-header at Paris' massive main airport. At the high end, there's the Hilton with its Concorde viewsdon't believe us, see here. For the budget-conscious, there's also the Ibis, with its view of everything else (see here) and direct connection to Terminals 1 & 2.
