The 2014 HotelChatter WiFi Report: Who is Still Charging for WiFi and Why?

April 22, 2014 at 11:27 AM | by | Comments (9)

It turns out that luxury hotel you've been dying to stay at doesn't actually have everything you need.

Whether you’re a frequent traveler or a once-a-year vacationer, there’s one amenity you’re probably counting on during your next hotel stay--free, working WiFi.

You're not alone. Hotels.com released a recent survey where hotel guests ranked free WiFi as the most important in-room amenity. See ya, minibar Snickers!

Fortunately, free WiFi has become more commonplace these days (at least 64 percent of hotels!) especially at hotels that caters to business travelers like Courtyard by Marriott and ones that hang with millennials like Ace Hotels. Even traditional brands have let their guard down, like Loews Hotels, who went free at all 19 hotels earlier this year.

Yet there are still a few greedy grinchy hold-outs, typically the luxury hotels and the heavily-franchised brands.

In past editions of our Annual WiFi Report, we’ve done extensive research, lists, diagrams, infographics and the like, all of which you can scroll through here. But this year, we’re taking a "Scared Straight" tactic.

Here are 10 hotels that are STILL charging for WiFi. You can make your booking decision accordingly*.

1. Marriott Hotels

2. Ritz-Carlton Hotels

3. W Hotels

4. Westin Hotels

5. Sheraton Hotels

6. Hilton Hotels

7. Waldorf Astoria Hotels

8. Hyatt Hotels

9. InterContinental Hotels

10. Wyndham Hotels

*Some of these brands offer WiFi free in the lobbies or public spaces and some individual properties even offer it free everywhere or as part of a resort fee. But more often than not, you can expect to pay for internet at these hotels. See even more brands that charge for WiFi here.

Keep reading for more on why hotels charge for WiFi and how you can get it for free.

The 11 Best Hotels in NYC: Fall 2011

November 2, 2011 at 1:58 PM | by | Comment (1)

This year has proven quite eventful on the NYC hotel front (then again, when hasn't it?). Hotels opened. Hotels closed. Hotels wore itsy bitsy tuxedo short shorts. And now, it is time to take stock of the hottest hotels on the NYC scene.

As with all our reviews, commentaries, and other long-winded musings, every hotel on this list has been HotelChatter tested and approved. In no way have these rankings been bought or influenced by eager hoteliers and/or pr reps.

Of course, everyone's got their own unique take on what they would consider "the best" hotel in a given city. Some go for design. Some go for affordability. Some go to party. But those varying opinions only make the conversation richer; so we hope to hear your thoughts on what you feel should (or shouldn't) have made the cut. Drop 'em in comments below!

The 6 Best Hotels in Boston: Winter 2011

December 15, 2010 at 12:58 PM | by | Comments (10)

For over six years now, we've been chronicling, photographing and filming the best and the worst in hotels around the world. And now it is time to impart our PH.D-like hotel wisdom on you in rankings form. You wanted the best and you got the best, the hottest hotels in Boston...LIST.

Our one criteria? All hotels on these lists must be HotelChatter tested and approved and in no way have these rankings been bought or influenced by eager hoteliers and/or pr reps.

Now, the rankings can and will change which is why our aim is to let you know who is moving up and down the charts on a seasonal basis.

In this Winter 2011 Best Hotels in Boston edition, we looked for hotels worthy of putting up with wind chills and black ice where you could enjoy the wonderfully low tourist count that Boston possesses in the winter. Yet while the winter can bring easy access to excellent chowder and pubs, thanks to hospitals, colleges, and corporations, rates in Boston don't fall as much as we would like.

We found sample price quotes using the HotelChatter booking engine and searching for rates between January 14 - January 17. Of course, rates are not guaranteed and are subject to change.

15 Upcoming London Hotels You Should Know About

November 4, 2010 at 1:22 PM | by | Comment (1)

We've been gabbing daily about the amount of new hotels that London will be getting in the next few months, well years, really. (Thank you 2012 Summer Olympics!) So we decided it was high time to create a handy reference list for you. Here are 15 Upcoming London Hotels You Should Know About, all of them opening by 2012. We listed them by opening date as best as we could but as you know with hotels, these will definitely change.

Got an upcoming London hotel that we missed? Kindly plop it comments below!

1. St. John Hotel: This party hotel in Leceister Square has been delayed once so we really hope that opening rate of December 1 sticks. Opening night room rates are holding firm at £235.

2. Four Seasons London: This hotel is actually reopening but with a completely brand new look. Reservations are being taken now for stays after January 15, 2011, although the hotel's website says "Opening late 2010." Still, we say jump on those £195 opening rates while they are still being offered!

3. W London: W Hotels will finally lose their UK virginity on one of the most romantic days of the year, Valentine's Day! Hopefully, this lover is worth the £329 opening rate!

4. 45 Park Lane: This former Playboy Club-turned-hotel promises to open in early 2011 but so far we see nothing open in January nor for Valentine's Day nor in the month of March. Fingers crossed that will change as we do love Dorchester Collection hotels.
