2011 Must-Have Hotel Amenity: Personal WiFi Hotspots

December 29, 2011 at 11:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

It's what you've been waiting all year for--The 2011 HotelChatter Awards! We'll be bringing you the best and worst of the year all day today and part of tomorrow. Agree or disagree with our picks? Air your thoughts in comments below.

We know that investing in technology products can be a bit of crapshoot. Just when you finally get a brand-new smartphone or decide to invest in an iPad or tablet, the next, newer, better version comes along. Which is why we understand hotels' reluctance to get as gung-ho as we do about the latest hand-held devices. (There is, however, no excuse for chunky box TVs in hotel rooms anymore.)

But we would love it if more and more hotels started offering personal WiFi hotspots for guests like the 4G Huddle station that's on offer at the JW Marriott in Kuala Lumpur. Or the E-mobile portable WiFi device that the Park Hyatt Tokyo offer its guests for about $33 a day and which can be used outside hotel, even when climbing Mt. Fiji.

But if that can't happen, then we'll just settle for an amazingly fast and strong wireless network like the gigaspeed internet the Peninsula Hotels are implementing.

There are several hotels we could call out for hyping themselves up without actually delivering anything to us devoted hotel guests in 2011. Like Thompson's Belgraves Hotel in London which is now opening February 1. But we expect delays from Thompson just as much as we expect celebrities to frequent their hotel lounges.

Back in NYC, the Dream Downtown certainly took forever to open but it's now one of the hottest places to stay (and swim) so that lengthy wait was worth it. We've also been waiting a long time for Virgin Hotels to take flight but we were satiated (for now) with their announcement of a Chicago hotel in 2013 (Ugh.)

And we can't even get started on Edition Hotels which managed to open only one other hotel in 2011 before losing its flag at the Edition Waikiki bringing the total of open and operating Edition Hotels back to one.

Going by our 2011 Master List of Hotel Openings, there were quite a few hotels that we were excited to see open but the one that lived up to our (admittedly low) expectations and more was Ian Schrager's newest hotel brand, The Public Chicago.

We weren't quite sure what to expect when we arrived on opening day to check-in but every nook and cranny in the hotel surprised us from the simple yet stylish rooms and public spaces to the complimentary bikes and the newfangled room service option, Public Express. And we can't forget about the delicious but quite affordable Pump Room restaurant.
