HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Breakthrough Hotel

We are suckers for themed hotels, and suckers for books.

Sure the rooms are small, but this is NYC. This place has energy, good service, a friendly staff, and a kick ass roof terrace. All just a few blocks from Times Square.

We knew we had to name this place breakthrough hotel for 2004, when the thought of telling everyone about it made us nervous. It feels like our secret place in New York.

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Coolest Hotel Technology

We went ahead and gave this award to a hotel that was breaking new ground in the area of hotels and technology; Nine Zero Hotel in Boston.

Nine Zero installed the LG Iris 3000 and let both Cloud Nine Suite guests and hotel workers use the new lock and key system.

Sure, sure, taking a photograph of your iris still feels a bit Minority Reportish, however, pioneering new technology at a hotel deserves its share of kudos.

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Best Hotel Hell Story

Is that an oxymoron?

In any event, this hotel hell story was a landslide winner in this category.

If you have not read it already, enjoy.

2004 Awards: Best Villain

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Best Villain

Now we are not saying this hotel is evil, we have no idea if that is the case.

What we are saying is if hotels were split into two groups, superheroes and villains, this hotel would be the leader of the villains.

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Best Love Story

In a year when Howard Stern made news from wire to wire, we would be remiss not to take a careful look at his Mercer Hotel love story.

This was another tough category, involving a tryst between Marky Mark and Jessica Alba on New Year's Day at Delano, and the infamous Britney Spears romp with George from Sienfeld at the Palms. However, in the end, it was Stern's involvement of Jen from Apprentice II that sealed the deal for him.

It is one thing to fall in love with a supermodel at the Mercer, but when an Apprentice cast off plays cupid pre-reality fame at one of NY's hottest hotels, you just can't ignore this type of serendipity.

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Best Celebrity Performance

We all know Paris Hilton is like so over exposed, however, with a little help from her sister, and Mz. Tara Reid, she was able to steal this award in an extremely difficult category.

How did she top Angelinie Jolie's tales of hotel room sex, and all the other sordid celebrity hotel tales we spun this year? Easy, she made a personal appearance.

That's right, HotelChatter representatives were actually on hand, at Ghost Bar, atop the Palms Hotel & Casino in Vegas, the night that Paris and Tara danced around like white girls with their hair on fire while drinking bottles of Belvedere. Furthermore, we saw a newly minted brunette named Nicky Hilton scurrying around in preparation for her quickie wedding.

In the end, the judges knew that this celebrity hotel performance had it all: Paris drinking and dancing, Tara Reid's brand new boobs, and a shotgun wedding in Vegas.

The triple threat blondes have done it again, their parents must be so proud.

HotelChatter 2004 Award :: Best Newcomer

Shortly after the Argonaut opened early in 2004 the rave reviews began to roll in to us here at HotelChatter.

The reviews were so strong, and this new Kimpton Property sounded so unique, we decided to venture in the Argonaut in June when we found ourselves out west.

Here is what we said back in June:

Exposed brick, dim lighting, campy nautical gear, and yet it all works. This place makes you want to hang out in the Fisherman's wharf area, and that is no small feat.

Though the Argonaut faced some stiff competition, it was the runaway winner as our newcomer of 2004.

2004 HotelChatter Awards

December 30, 2004 at 10:18 AM | by | Comments (0)

Welcome to the 2004 HotelChatter Awards.

We wavered back and forth about whether or not we should put together some sort of 2005 list, ala Travel & Leisure, and Conde Nast, you know, looking ahead. Then we realized we were yet to breathe the air in 2005, let alone gather hotel stories from the coming year, so how could we present awards for a year in which the sun is yet to shine?

That said, we decided to put together YAYEL for 2004.  We have spent the past two days scouring the nearly 1000 stories we have gathered over the past year here at HotelChatter, which is an amazing amount of stories, if you think about it.  We want to thank all the Hotel Mavens out there for participating, and contributing, throughout 2004, and we look forward to your continued participation in 2005, so we can bring you more hotel stories throughout the coming year.

Back to the lecture at hand,  we somehow winnowed hundreds of hotel stories down to ten award winners.  Setting up these categories, and picking winners, was harder than you might think, so let's get this dog and pony show started.

Here are the categories:

·   Best Newcomer
·   Best Celebrity Performance (@ a hotel, of course)
·   Best Hotel Love Story
·   Best Hotel Villain
·   Best Hotel Hell Story
·   Best Special Effects
·   Best Hotel Technology
·   Lifetime Achievement Award
·   Breakthrough Hotel
·   People's Choice Award

We will be presenting these awards throughout the day...stay tuned.
