Should Grooms Get More Love On Their Wedding Day?

June 4, 2014 at 2:32 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's pretty much common knowledge these days that weddings are all about the bride. Rightfully so in many ways, but even the most intense bridezilla has to admit that when it comes to hotel wedding packages, the grooms have always gotten the short end of the stick. Think about it. There's typically a beautiful, spacious suite with in-room hair services and champagne for the bridal party. Meanwhile, the groom and his three groomsmen share two double beds.

The Marriott Caribbean & Latin America Resorts Collection is looking to fix this injustice with its "No Guy Left Behind" package, part of its "Worry-Free Weddings Program." Obviously, despite being designed for guys, women are still naming these packages.

Basically, it's an activity menu that offers a selection of things for the guys to do leading up to the wedding, such as cigar, scotch, and tequila tastings, flag football on the beach, and grooming sessions at the spa/salon. Personally, this writer finds the booze tasting to be an intriguing option, perhaps as a groomsmen present the day before the wedding. Flag football sounds like a good way to shake off the nerves, so long as everyone remembers it's only a game.

Daryl Hannah would be so proud to tie the knot at Sheraton Forth Lauderdale Beach Hotel with their newest wedding package that's fit for those with fins. While we might be over underwater hotels, we can really get behind a picture-perfect, underwater-wedding day.

The Mermaid Wedding package offers love-dovey couples the opportunity to say their "I Do's" under water with an "actual" mermaid while up to 50 of their closest friends watch from the dry deck of The Wreck Bar, the hotel's nautical-themed bar. (See a photo of a vow-renewal here.) From portholes and picture windows, your guests have a view under the surface of the hotel pool for the bride and groom's 10-minute ceremony. Something tells us there wont be a dry eye in the house.

Once the happy couple dries off, a 90-minute reception in the bar for toasts and mingling with your guests. The package includes a choreography session prior to the ceremony so neither the bride or groom look like a dead fish and mermaid tails will be on offer for photo-ops.

If you are looking to get hitched in Vegas, but not in the overdone the Little White Chapel like the crazy girl from American Idol or her idol Britney Spears, the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas offers a classier option: the Graciously Luxurious wedding package. Not only will you get a wedding at the Mandarin Oriental, but it'll throw in a free honeymoon of five whole nights at any of its hotels worldwide.

Yep, that means you've got free luxe accommodations in such places as Barcelona and Hong Kong. Plus, it doesn't have to be five nights in the same town - you could split up the five days and hotel-hop if a week is too long for you in one place.

There are some unusual ways to get married, and the Hilton Petaling Jaya in Malaysia is definitely offering to help you out with one of them: the ol' underwater wedding. Yep, they have a special Underwater Wedding Package for the apparently big enough market of people who want to get married, underwater, in Malaysia.

The first catch is that you have to invite at least 60 guests, but only 8 of them can be underwater including the bride and groom.

Since summertime, and more specifically the month of June, is the most popular time for weddings, we are kicking off our Hotel Wedding Crashers feature today. And since we ourselves have a record number of weddings to attend this summer, which all happen to be destination weddings, we thought we could get out our wedding travel frustrations in this feature.

So throughout the summer, we will be featuring all types of hotel wedding stories from packages to honeymoon suites to hotel wedding heaven and hell.

Whether you are getting married, planning your wedding, or just taking advantage of someone's open bar reception, we want to hear your hotel wedding tips/stories/frustrations.

Send your hotel wedding stories and questions here.

If we had to get married all over again--not that we would, our wedding day was the best day of our lives but planning it was the worst time of our lives--we would hit up the wedding chapel at the Wynn Las Vegas. Oh yeah, and we would need to have some serious high-roller money to do this too.

While we personally have never stayed in a Wynn hotel room (HotelChatter has), we've spent a lot time there and say what you want about the interior (parasols, gaudy floral prints, Purple People Eaters) but the wedding chapel looks damn good.

[Ed. Note: Hotel Maven Jenna recently hit up the swanky Pierre Hotel in Manhattan as an undercover "bride". Enjoy.]

Clad in a classic little black dress and a pearl necklace, I waited alone in the extravagant lobby of New York City's Pierre Hotel for my 3:00 appointment. Two dapper-looking men approached me, each one sporting that sort of unsettling smile last seen on that guy at the bar who is creepily confident that he's about to get lucky. As I began explaining why my fiancée couldn't join me that afternoon--he works on Wall Street, you know-- I noticed the younger of the two men glance down at my left hand. I really hope he didn't notice that my $4.00 faux engagement ring was turning my finger green.

Our second story in this series is actually our experience last weekend in Sonoma wine country in California, a very popular place for San Francisco-based couples to get married. This wedding took place in Glen Ellen which is about 10 minutes away from Sonoma proper at the Beltane Ranch. The place really doesn't do much except host weddings and people who are wine-tasting in the area since Beltane doesn't have any vineyards of its own. It does however have two horses that roam the front of the property looking extremely thirsty due to the dry and hot daytime weather.
