Late last week, we got to check out one of the hottest new joints to hit Manhattan's Lower East Side: the Viktor & Spoils taqueria and tequila bar, located adjacent to the lobby at The Hotel On Rivington. Flushed from a few too many sips of the Central Park Swizzle (Rum Zacapa, lime, grapefruit, sugar, crushed ice, $14), our favorite of the night, we headed off to the bathroom.
Once inside, we had to blink and rub our eyes to make sure what we were seeing was correct: the walls had been plastered with actual Mexican peso notes, covering the room from floor to ceiling like strips of wallpaper. Compared to the larger but more sober bathrooms at CO-OP next door, this little bank note temple perfectly captured the excess and merriment of a tequila bar. At least, just enough to make us order yet another $14 flight.
Behold the World's Most Expensive Tequila Pop. The Marquis Los Cabos Resort has concocted a frozen tequila pop made with 24 ct. gold flakes and Tequilas Premium Clase Azul Ultra tequila which sells for about $1,500 a bottle. But just a lick of this frozen tequila will cost you $1,000.
The tequila pop, which is served poolside, is crafted much like any other frozen treat--on a stick and with a little bit of sugar. But unlike a frozen lemonade pop, we doubt you will let any of this spill onto your hands.
Normally, with expensive booze like this we'd say split the cost with friends but um, that doesn't really work so well with an ice pop, unless you're into menage a pops. Otherwise, you can down some straight Clase Azul Ultra tequila for $500 a shot. Ok we're about to pass out right now and it's not from the tequila.
Rooms at the hotel are much less than the tequila, about $350 a night for a junior suite with a full ocean view.
