What Is This At the InterCon Miami?

You know those instances when you're in a hotel and you have some simple questions about the area you're staying in, but don't feel like dealing with some peppy concierge who's just going to draw a bunch of lines and circles on a paper map and regurgitate the same tired, old recommendations?

Well, here's one nifty thing about staying at the InterCon Miami. The newly-refreshed hotel has installed an arsenal of giant touch screen coffee tables in the lobby that provide guests with a fun, user-friendly way to plan local outings, make restaurant reservations, or even book an appointment at the spa.

If you want, you can even use the screens to order a cocktail without having to walk over to the bar!

Yes, technically, that's what waiters are for. But this is 2012, and giant touch screens are just so much more fun.

It's Monday and just the right hour to take a minute and play Witty Wordsmith with us, whydontcha? That's right, it's time to Name.This.Caption!

If you're looking to find the party at an all-inclusive hotel, the pool area and swim-up bar are good places to start. There's always that one couple that parties just a little harder than the rest of the bunch, and they're not hard to spot at these resorts, especially during the off-season when occupancy is low. You either love them or you hate them, that's for sure.

Take this couple we caught in action at the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta, for example. You know the drill - we need your help with a side-splitting caption. Does this gal have cold hands, or is her man just happy to see us? Seems like one hell of a Christmas card!

A Shining Look At Camacho's Puerto Rico

November 26, 2012 at 7:09 PM | by | Comments (0)

As Puerto Rico says goodbye to native son Hector "Macho" Camacho, in what can only be described as a heinous crime, let's not forget that the island, though plagued with problems, has a sunnier side.

This view, taken from the El Conquistador Resort near Fajardo, is a shining example of the country's beauty.

The 18-hole, par 72 golf course has just one of the many gorgeous views from the hotel which is located atop of a steep hill overlooking the Caribbean Sea.

Check this photo taken during a visit to the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. There was something going down as a Japanese film crew commanded part of the beach to capture a pop-star's video.

But this couple sunning on the beach here? Didn't raise an eyebrow. Didn't move their backpack not one bit to see what all the fuss was about.

We were torn between watching them bake (and ignore the boom) and figuring out who was was being filmed. We're so nosy, we admit it!

So do we name this photo "Jaded in Oahu"? "The Nap Trumps All"? Or can you do better?

It's Monday and just the right hour for some work procrastination. Take a minute and play Witty Wordsmith with us, whydontcha? That's right, it's time to Name.This.Caption!

We snapped this pic during a trip to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort. This "colorful" gentleman took our breath away he was so Rainbow Brite! We learned he gives island tours, and serves a mean rum punch from the back of his truck. Even more interesting? He spray paints his beard different colors every week!

Now, we gave our guy the name "Tangerine Man", to match his bus, but we think you can do better!

Check this photo we took during a visit to the Barcelo Karmina Palace Deluxe in Manzanillo, Mexico. We spotted three "grown ups" playing in the pool, making a bit more noise than you're supposed to at a romantic, relaxing all-inclusive. But, they were having way more fun than other guests that day, so we went straight creeper/paparazzi on them and snapped a quick pic.

However, we're not sure whether to name this photo "Synchronized Swimming Gone Wrong" or "Tequila Takeover". Or, do you have something better?

We like to keep it fun but informative here at HotelChatter so our newest series, What is This?, is devoted to odd-looking items in hotel rooms that upon first glance look as if they serve only a decorative purpose. But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.

Last year, we took a few steps around the Charlotte Inn's museum-worthy hoard of antique letterboxes, 19th century oil paintings, old medicine boxes, and stuffed pheasants in the lobby. But it turns out, the distinctive collection spreads throughout the entire hotel.

In the Coach House Suite, for example, you'll find this strange looking pulley system device hanging over one of the windows in the suite's living room.

But what does it do?

We got a kick out of this blog post by comedian Paul F. Tompkins, who was recently staying at The Stanley Hotel in northern Colorado. Inside the room, he came across an ironing board, neatly stored in its own carrying case, with shoulder straps.

Thankfully, we weren't the only ones to catch the irony of placing a transportable ironing board in a hotel room. Click below to see Tompkins' hilarious commentary of the discovered hotel amenity...

Check out that fancy glassware drawer! Having a nightcap just got a lot more stylish at the brand-spanking new South Place Hotel London, which opened this past Monday.

We had a chance to look around a few days ago, and here are a few things that you can expect at the hotel: bedrooms with champagne-colored silk walls. Flatscreen TVs by B&O. Lots of art, including some that will be created on-site this month. A residents’ lounge, complete with pool table. An all-day dining room and lounge on the ground floor, as well as a soon-to-open seafood brasserie on the top floor, with roof terrace. Unique toiletries by British perfumer James Heeley in grey-marble bathrooms. And of course, that fancy glassware.

We’ll have a lot more info for you next week, complete with photo gallery, but if you’ll excuse us, we have a sudden urge for a glass of wine to start the weekend.

At HotelChatter, we see a lot of hotel rooms. Really a lot of them. Minimalist, maximalist, small and big, traditional and contemporary, generic or unique, we've come across everything from tired and worn down to so-new-it-still-smells-like-fresh-paint. But it's not every day we come across one that allows you to select a room based on your preferred color palette.

Such is the case though at Opus Vancouver, the boutique hotel in the heart of the city's trendy Yaletown. Six room types (from Standard Rooms to the Penthouse Suite) are decorated in five different color schemes. From cranberry red, deep orange, and taupe to vibrant green and warm blue, the general Opus modus operandi is: "we don't do beige".

You Can Spy On the Burj Al Arab (For A Fraction Of Its Price) From The Beach At Mina A'Salam

August 17, 2012 at 9:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, we shared our tips on where to stay when you visit Dubai for the very first time. One of the hotels on our list was Mina A'Salam, which is owned by Jumeirah.

Another Jumeirah-owned Dubai hotel we happen to love (and we're not alone—Tom Cruise, Michael Jackson and Angelina Jolie have all been past guests) is the one and only Burj Al Arab.

But if the hotel's $1,200/night price tag is making you uneasy, consider this: for just a quarter of the price (and probably a tenth of the snobbery), Mina A'Salam offers an impeccable beach that sits right next to the Burj, so you can bask in the sail-shaped hotel's glory without ever having to break the bank. It's what we like to call "Dubai DIY."

What Is This On The Wall At Secrets Wild Orchid?

But everything happens for a reason, right? And we're here to tell you what these things really do.

When we were shown around the suites at the all-inclusive Secrets Wild Orchid in Montego Bay, we knew the dark square on the wall was some sort of door. But it was too small to be a closet, and because it was just behind the front door, that wouldn’t have made sense anyway. Unable to stand the curiosity any longer, we flung open the door and found…nothing. Nothing but a big empty space. We had to investigate further.
