We've mentioned hotel smells here a few times before. Some hotels are using heavy-duty equipment to pump scents into their lobbies, while others offer guests the option of having the sweet scent of grass wafted into their rooms as they sleep.
But this is a little different: enter the Scent-Emitting LCD Display System, which is currently being tested in stores, movie theaters and, yes, hotels.
A smelly hotel in Northern New Jersey? Well, that's nothing new. But when the smell doesn't seem to be coming from the landfills of Secaucus, then you might have a problem. Which is exactly what happened at a Holiday Inn on Route 22 in Springfield.
Since we grew up close to Route 22 (Skate 22 anyone?), we can personally tell you it's not the most scenic strip in the Garden State. However, apparently there was a stank so bad in the Holiday Inn along this route that guests had to be evacuated AND have their eyes flushed out as a precautionary measure.
ABC 7 reports that the smell came from the 4th floor:
Between 50 and 60 guests reportedly complained of various symptoms, including coughing and eye watering.
As a result, all 37 rooms on the floor were evacuated, and the guests were treated in a decontamination tent in the parking lot. Their eyes were washed down as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, the fourth floor was aired out.
After three hours, the guests were allowed to return to their rooms. None had to be taken to the hospital.
There's no official word on what cause the foul odor but the hotel suspects it might be a prank.
Travelodge Hotels in the UK are known for their sort of wacky offerings and promotions. Remember the spacey new age pajamas or the nude sleepwalkers study? Let's not forget the free rooms for folks named Mary and Joseph over Christmastime.
This time around Travelodge has announced that guests will now be able to choose a fragrance to have wafted about their room overnight while they sleep.
So this doesn't sound too crazy but then we read the choices for the fragrances. They are the smell of the sea, freshly cut grass, baby powder and chocolate.
The NY Times had an article about the not-so-new trend of Hotel Smells. We've heard/smelled all this before but we did find it interesting how they are pumping these scents into hotel lobbies:
These scents can be delivered through heating and cooling systems or toaster-size devices provided by companies like ScentAir, which works with a number of hotels. A fan blows air over a cartridge holding custom-scented oil. Most hotels are careful not to overpower guests.
"The scent is subtle, so it's not like people walk in and say, `Wow, that lemongrass and green tea really smells great,' " said Caryn Kboudi, a spokeswoman for Omni Hotels. "They might notice the lobby smells great or it smells fresh."
True dat. When we walked into the Westin Times Square it smelled just fresh. At least compared to the dirty streets outside. One scent we notice and admittedly like a lot, is the jasmine scent that is pumped through the Borgata and Venetian casinos. Although it's probably mixed with some crack to keep you awake and gambling.
Morgans Hotel Group which has some well-known properties like the Mondrian Hotel, The Shore Club and the Hudson Hotel has launched its Signature Room Scents program.
Similar to Four Points' apple pie smell in the lobbies and the Westin's green tea scent, Morgans hotel rooms have created a scent for each of their hotels. But the difference here is that you can actually buy these smells to take home with you. So that you will always remember your Morgans Hotel experience.
Here are some examples of what kind of room smells you can purchase.
Hudson New York: Hudson's fragrance blends cassis, raspberry blossom, red magnolia, blooming peony, jasmine and sheer musk to capture the adventurous spirit of a hotel on the edge of Manhattan cool.
Mondrian Hotel: Mondrian's scent reflect this west coast fantasy tangerine, peony, jasmine, sheer musk, passion fruit, mandarin blossom, sweet magnolia, vanilla and coconut wood.
In kicking off their new awareness campaign for the Sheraton Four Points brand, Starwood Hotels has decided to implement a cinnamon apple pie smell in each Four Points lobby as a way to treat guests to an Americana type of experience and hoping this will also make them feel more comfortable.
Comfort is the underlying theme in the Four Points campaign. From comfort food to comfortable accommodations, the hotel brand plans to use "Comfort isn't complicated" as their tag line. And living up to that, apple pie will be available on the hotels' restaurant menus and through express room service. But it doesn't stop there. We hear Starwood sent a reporter on the hotel beat at a national newspaper a home-cooked apple pie in refrigerated packaging. We guess they don't believe in fighting the battle of the bulge.
