Santa Monica Place Opens Tomorrow and The Fairmont Miramar is Prepared to Shop

August 5, 2010 at 1:05 PM | by | Comments (0)

The sexy rooftop food court at Santa Monica Place.

Santa Monica, Calif. is in a certified TIZZY this week as the long-awaited, totally renovated Santa Monica Place Mall reopens tomorrow anchored by a Bloomingdale's, Nordstroms, Barneys Co-op and a CB2 and filled with luxe brand stores like Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Tory Burch and Tiffany.

The mall is attached to the Third Street Promenade which is a tourist fave but has also been showing some wear and tear recently. Not to mention the street acts and the crowds that gather around them make it nearly impossible to walk through on a weekend afternoon in the summer.

So needless to say, everyone on the Westside is stoked about the new mall including the hotels nearby. Already, The Fairmont Miramar, which sits across from the Promenade (and about four blocks north of the new mall), has created a package with Tory Burch to celebrate the mall's opening.

Where: 848 Washington Street & W 13th St [map], New York, NY, United States, 10014
March 25, 2010 at 12:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

Keen on staying at the Standard New York this weekend? Want to get a nifty little discount AND pick-up some stylish duds for yourself that will make your friends jealous? Of course you do and here's how.

W magazine is hosting a one-day shopping extravaganza called Shop W Style on Saturday in the Meatpacking District from 10am to 6pm. Select stores in the area will be offering shoppers cocktails, little bites and most importantly, merchandise discounts.

You can check out all the offerings on the map and happenings link here but a few of the discounts we're digging are: 20 percent off Tory Burch (not her Reva ballerina shoes tho); 15 percent off Trina Turk full-priced merch; 15 percent off at Tracey Reese; 15 percent off Scoop NYC and 15 percent off Paige Denim.

Now that all sounds fab but how does the Standard Hotel play into this?

The holidays might be the most wonderful time of the year, but they’re also the busiest. Between frying up latkes, slurping down eggnog, deciding which hideous lumpy monstrosity to wear to your friend’s ironic “ugly sweater” party, and making up your naughty and nice lists, it can be impossible to get your holiday shopping done.

For those of us who need to get away from it all for a night just to get everything done, Le Parc Suite Hotel in West Hollywood is offering a Passport Savings Shopping Package with deals on the stores at The Grove, a prime celeb-spotting shopping mecca.

Shop 'till you drop, then toast to a job well done at The Clift's Redwood Room.

You had us at free parking.

Well, free parking, along with a bevy of discounts at major retailers in San Francisco's Union Square. With the holiday season steadily creeping upon us, we've been receiving tips about more "room-plus-shopping discount" packages than we can count. The problem being that most of them are less than noteworthy, and some are downright lame.

The Clift Hotel, however, is wise to what discerning consumers are looking for. Their Happy Shopping Package is available now through January 9, 2010, and offers guests who book it major price cuts at some Union Square's upscale stores—the places where you could really use an extra 20% off, or a comparable deal.

Shopaholics Summoned to NY's Roosevelt Hotel

You knew that some New York hotels would offer a package based on the new Confessions of a Shopaholic movie; it was only a matter of time. First out of the gates is midtown's Roosevelt Hotel with their "Shopaholics Anonymous" deal. For $453 per person until April 30, overspending, shoe-happy travelers get two nights at the Roosevelt, named the "Grand Dame of Madison Avenue," and a whole slew of consumer pleasures:

· Access to an exclusive ‘secret stash of designer showrooms’ unavailable to the public
· 40% VIP discount reserved for Roosevelt guests
· iSpend Application added to customers iPhone
· Certificate for a three-course lunch at a NYC classic restaurant
· Single chocolate martini at Madison Club Lounge
· “Denny and George” inspired scarf
· Cappuccino and pastry breakfast

Because of the price, the addition of those secret showrooms and the nod to the iPhone, we're thinking that this is a pretty unique deal for New York City. It's only when the Shopaholic movie debuts nationwide on February 13, however, that we'll get to see if the rest of the country is in the mood to ravage Fifth Avenue.

Fairmont Chicago Trying to Ease the Pain of Holiday Shopping

If you're ready for a holiday shopping spree in Chicago, then the latest package from the Fairmont Chicago should appeal to your credit account. With the long-winded name of the "Shopping at Macy's on State Street Holiday" package, you'd be wanting to get some bang for your bucks and in fact, the deal doesn't seem too bad at all.

Starting from rates of $269, you'll get overnight accommodation for two, a few souvenirs like a Macy's tote bag, a visitors savings pass, a Martha Stewart holiday ornament (just what our tree is missing ...), some typical Chicago Frango candy canes and a $100 Macy's gift card making your hotel room really costing you only $169 ... because everybody wants to go shopping, right? And it's cheaper than the Trump Chicago which may not even open in time.

Admittedly the old Marshall Fields fans might not be so crazy about the Macy's gift card, but you can't look a gift card in the mouth, can you?

The package is good from "Black Friday to White Christmas" and can be booked online or by calling 800-526-2008.

Westlake Village Inn: The Perfect Outlet Center Stop

Over at Jaunted, we've been profiling places to shop in Southern California. Just last week, we took a look at the Camarillo Outlets which is just beyond the San Fernando Valley near Westlake Village.

Thanks to a commenter, we got a recommendation on where to stay if you planning on make a day or two of the outlet center. ExNewYoker suggests staying at the Westlake Village Inn.

Last time a bunch of us went to these outlets we shopped till we dropped then stayed overnight at the nearby Westlake Village Inn with a great restaurant and cool club.   We hung out in the pool/hot tub all morning and then left. WVI is off 101 at Lindero.

The inn aims to be a country-style inn with "European fountains, ivy lined trellis walkways, streams, floral ponds, gardens and a picturesque rose arbor featuring over 25 different hues and fragrances." These extravagant grounds are the highlight of the hotel as many guests like the fact that you don't have to walk down a dark hotel corridor to get to your room.

Inside the rooms are the latest in hotel amenities--from WiFi throughout the property to Bose radios and plasma TVs. The restaurant ExNewYorker writes about is Mediterraneo which serves bistro-style fare and the nightclub Bogie's  has live music playing every Friday and Saturday nights.

The rates on the place are great too. We checked a room for Friday August 10 for two nights and the going rate was $170 a night.

'Package Pushers' Taking Your Money

As we pointed out in this week's Bad Rate, sometimes the offered value of a hotel package is a lot more than the retail price.

Now, Forbes has taken a magnifying glass to some top-tier hotels and their ludicrous lavish packages.

Looking at the "Shoes, Shoes, Shoes" package at the Ritz-Carlton New York in Central Park which starts at $2,605 per night and doesn't include the shoes that you will buy at Stuart Weitzman's request.

Forbes broke the package down with the rack rate for rooms at $695 a night, lunch at the Lever House is $55 a person, 1/2 bottle of wine is $32 and personal shopping ranging from anywhere between $150 and $450 per hour, or at least $1,200 for an eight-hour day. At the lowest level, the "Shoes" package could costs guest $2,095--$510 less than what the hotel charges.

Naturally, the "Package Pushers" at hotels won't do this sort of thing for you:

"We don't normally break down the packages for our guests," says Rebecca Rand, public relations manager at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park. "There's value added in the experience they're getting."

True, every detail is arranged and you can sort of pretend these people are "working for you." And if you can afford at least $2,095 on rooms and shoes, then what's an extra $500?
