The old look
It can be tough for a hotel to stay relevant and fresh when newer, perkier whipper-snappers are popping up all over the place. And the game is especially cutthroat in a jam-packed place like Atlantic City, where Revel, the first new casino to open in nine years, will understandably be hogging the spotlight for many months to come.
Though not if The Borgata has anything to say about it. The resort, which opened nine years ago, has been constantly refreshing itself with new expansions and wings and even a new upscale hotel offshoot, The Water Club.
Now, the 1,556-room resort is in the midst of a $50 million renovation of its guest rooms, set to be finished by July. Which should allow some time for Revel's initial fanfare to subside, but not much; not much.

We were admittedly a little shocked to learn last year that Marriott was planning a new double hotel tower—set to be the tallest hotel in New York at 751 feet—that will operate dually as a Courtyard by Marriott and as a Residence Inn.
And though we were initially excited about the whole Mandarin Oriental-views-with-Marriott-prices thing, juliana was quick to point out that New York is a place where all brands jack up their prices way high (sky's the limit)—even normally affordable brands like Courtyard and Residence.
But now it looks like the monster tower will be getting some competition from Marriott—on the very same block! NY Post is reporting that one developer is in the process of building a 34-story hotel just around the corner on W 54th St, and that a construction sign names the project as a Hilton Hotel.

Brownstoner is reporting on the projected May opening of another new boutique hotel in Williamsburg—literally just a block and a half from Hotel Williamsburg. The newcomer will likely be called The Wythe, and rooms will go for around $200 a night. So, not to jump the gun here, but let's just get things straight: it hasn't even finished construction yet and already it's got better rates and a more original name?
They're making it too easy to pick sides!
But we're not gonna hold our breath. After waiting an entire summer (and then some) for their sleek, pool-equipped neighbor to get the motor running, we're not so quick to get our hearts broken again. At least not until getting a good, long look at the finished place.
