From Nail Files to Firewater, Hotels Hand Out More Amenities

November 1, 2013 at 2:26 PM | by | ()

Oh, we love when hotels give us a little extra treat in our rooms. We're not too particular--heck, we've been excited with everything from toothpaste to contact solution. It's the small things that count, especially when some hotels won't even supply a bottle of water in case of midnight hour parchness.

So, imagine our delight upon discovering even more amenities available at these properties. Some of them are nice gestures to show appreciation, others are yours with a simple request. As always, keep your eyes peeled for perks--you never know what you could be missing out on!

Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.: Each evening, the hotel features a different president's favorite cookie in the hotel lobby along with a recipe that guests can take home. Examples include Barack Obama's white & dark chocolate chip to Abraham Lincoln's lemon squares. Happen to be staying at the Georgetown property? Look forward to the butler who serves s'mores every evening by the wood burning fireplace.

You'll Love These Unexpected In-Room Hotel Amenities

October 2, 2013 at 4:04 PM | by | ()

Forgot something? No worries! These hotels have got you covered with the basics and more.

Not long ago we discussed what would be the ultimate hotel in-room amenities. Some of our desires may have been a bit dramatic, but hey, one can only dream. However, more and more hotels these days go beyond a complimentary dental and razor kit. Most of these items are free, others may have a nominal charge--but we're just excited that if we've left something at home, all is not lost!

Here's what you can ask to be delivered to your room at these hotels:

Sofitel Philadelphia
Contact the housekeeping department for these items:
*Shout Wipes
*Feminine hygiene products
*Night lights
*Crayons & Coloring books
*Hand-held steamer
*One hour of steaming service

Kimpton Hotels
The brand's "Forgot It? We've Got It!" program is awesome and has expanded to include these oft-left home products:
*Fashion Tape (no nip-slips happening on their watch)
*Straightening Iron
*Curling Iron
*Heating Pad (oh, this is a gooood one)
*Computer/Mobile Chargers
*Collar Stays (hmm..this is a puzzler?!)

For a small fee, Kimpton can bring these other amenities:
Contact Lens Solution
Spray Wrinkle Remover
Static Guard
Super Glue
Nail File (anyone find it odd a nail file isn't free, but a humidifier is?)

What else can you get just for the asking? Read on!

What Does It Really Mean When Your Friend Says He Knows The GM?

May 16, 2013 at 3:31 PM | by | ()

Since we're all on social media these days, whether it be Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or FourSquare, we frequently see folks posting their recommendations for seemingly everything from restaurants to bars to skin care products, music, shops and of course, hotels.

Most of the hotel recs are pretty straight-forward--"I loved this hotel!" "Great spot on the beach!" "The kids love it!" and the like--but since we follow so many peeps that are frequent travelers as well as those in the hotel industry, we often see this kind of mention in a hotel recommendation, Be sure to mention my name to the GM and he will hook you up. Um, wha-what?

While we've personally never phoned a GM for a "hook-up", we have heard some experiences of guests who got preferential treatments from the hotel whether it be because they are return guest, or because the hotel was trying to make-up for a boo-boo or because they were there for a special occasion. So based on what we've seen and heard, a "hook-up" can mean a few different things:

Why, Hello, Free Delicious Brownie

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 342 W 40th St [map], New York, NY, United States, 10018

Back in July, we remember hearing something about a Mister Softee truck pulling up outside the Distrikt Hotel and supplying over-heated guests with some free ice cream. Though wildly successful, a Distrikt employee had explained this was "not a normal thing" and no other such events were planned for the near future.

Until yesterday! Anyone lucky enough to be walking down W 40th St between Eighth and Ninth Avenues between the hours of 4pm and 5pm were rewarded with a free item (and drink!) from Sweetery NYC.

The graphic dessert truck was parked directly outside the hotel's front door—to the delight of guests and staff members alike—and didn't really seem to discriminate between hotel peeps and non-affiliated passersby. "Yep, it's totally free," one friendly concierge noted, at which point we smiled widely and raced over to claim our mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
