What Does It Really Mean When Your Friend Says He Knows The GM?

Since we're all on social media these days, whether it be Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or FourSquare, we frequently see folks posting their recommendations for seemingly everything from restaurants to bars to skin care products, music, shops and of course, hotels.

Most of the hotel recs are pretty straight-forward--"I loved this hotel!" "Great spot on the beach!" "The kids love it!" and the like--but since we follow so many peeps that are frequent travelers as well as those in the hotel industry, we often see this kind of mention in a hotel recommendation, Be sure to mention my name to the GM and he will hook you up. Um, wha-what?

While we've personally never phoned a GM for a "hook-up", we have heard some experiences of guests who got preferential treatments from the hotel whether it be because they are return guest, or because the hotel was trying to make-up for a boo-boo or because they were there for a special occasion. So based on what we've seen and heard, a "hook-up" can mean a few different things:

Beyond Turndown Service: These Hotels Kick Perks Up A Notch

We know it pays off to stick with one or two hotel chains to accrue points for higher level of perks when checking-in. It doesn't just make us feel appreciated, these little details makes us feel like a baller when we get an upgraded room, free breakfast or even a later check-out.

Hotels know their 'bread and butter' are travelers who don't think twice about staying at different brands or pick their travel destination based on where their favorite hotels have properties. So, cater to them, some hoteliers have come up with unique perks to keep their most loyal customers.

Late arriving flights are no longer an issue for road warriors racking up 75 or more nights per year at Starwood properties. These platinum guests have to option of picking their check-in and check-out times ultimately reserving a hotel room for 24 hours. So, if you arrive at 9pm that means that check-out isn't until 9pm the next day. Sweet!

Why, Hello, Free Delicious Brownie

Back in July, we remember hearing something about a Mister Softee truck pulling up outside the Distrikt Hotel and supplying over-heated guests with some free ice cream. Though wildly successful, a Distrikt employee had explained this was "not a normal thing" and no other such events were planned for the near future.

Until yesterday! Anyone lucky enough to be walking down W 40th St between Eighth and Ninth Avenues between the hours of 4pm and 5pm were rewarded with a free item (and drink!) from Sweetery NYC.

The graphic dessert truck was parked directly outside the hotel's front door—to the delight of guests and staff members alike—and didn't really seem to discriminate between hotel peeps and non-affiliated passersby. "Yep, it's totally free," one friendly concierge noted, at which point we smiled widely and raced over to claim our mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
