The Saddest Cupcakes That Ever Graced A Hotel Bar

We showed up to a pre-Fashion Week party last night at W Union Square and, as usual with these types of events, made a beeline for the bar. Planning on ordering a quick cocktail, we then noticed something that made us chuckle. At one end of the bar on a silver tray were rows of mini cupcakes—thick with icing, delicious looking, and virtually untouched.

But what else did we expect? This is Fashion Week, after all, where anything more than a stick of celery is considered an indulgence.

Not that these sugar bombs put a damper on anyone's fun. Indeed, with guest appearances by DJ Chelsea Leyland, W Global Fashion Director Jenné Lombardo, and man-about-town Waris Ahluwalia, the music was loud and the paparazzi bulbs were a-flashin'. Boy, were we glad for that drink.

While New York's Oak Room Closes, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Starts A Music Festival In Vegas

Two main players in the hotel music world are really getting the shake-up this month, and all we can do for now is sit back and watch (or, you know, listen) as the changes come to pass.

For starters, let's face the awful truth that The Algonquin is saying bye-bye forever to the Oak Room, its famed piano lounge that has hosted cabaret legends from Barbara Carroll to Julie Wilson to Steve Ross. According to the NY Times, audiences there have been "declining."

But it's not all doom and gloom! Head west—about 2,200 miles west—and witness a positively burgeoning indie music scene when Sports Illustrated Swimsuit hosts its first-ever music festival at The Cosmopolitan (where else?). The two-day lineup will feature indie acts like The Black Lips (above), Delta Spirit, and Elan Atias among others, and will hopefully do for the Strip what SI's Swimsuit issue has traditionally done for non-sports fans—make everyone sit up and pay attention.

Guests Got A Taste of Carnival This Weekend At The Westin Playa Bonita

Any Panamanians who were still unclear about that gigantic white tower that recently went up on a quarter-mile stretch of beach outside of Panama City had their doubts removed this weekend, when Westin Playa Bonita, a 650-room, Pacific Ocean-facing resort with three pools, six restaurants, and a forthcoming spa, officially opened.

Drawn by a few awesome firework displays, an open bar, and a steady stream of live music (salsa, merengue, reggaeton—you name it, they played it), an estimated 3400 people turned up to celebrate Westin's grand arrival in the city (though Starwood's Le Meridien Panama has been around for a few years now). And with yet another Westin set to open later this year, Panamanians aren't likely to be forgetting Westin's name anytime soon. Nor, for that matter, will the 700 (mostly US) guests who received a taste of Carnival-style partying that lasted well into Friday night/Saturday morning, during the hotel's grand opening event.

With A Little Luck, You Could Snag a $47 Room At Cassa Hotel

2012 is Year of the Dragon, and In case you didn't know, the dragon is a pretty big deal on the Chinese zodiac. So, to match the excitement of the new year, New York's Cassa Hotel & Residences is running a pretty nifty Chinese New Year promotion.

Guests who "like" Cassa on Facebook (and prove it by showing their computer or smartphone to the Front Desk) will be given a fortune cookie. Which at first sounds like not such a great trade-off. But hidden inside one of the fortunes is a voucher that will let you book your next stay for only $47.10/night—roughly 80% off the normal rate. All those limestone tubs and minimalist rooms just by eating opening a cookie? This might be our new favorite holiday.

Make New Friends At These 7 Gay-Friendly US Hotels

January 20, 2012 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

Maybe we got hit with the Valentine's Day bug a little early, but we're feeling extra-romantic this week. So we're channeling that energy into this list (as promised), of some of the country's gay-friendliest hotels and resorts. But don't worry—it's not all rose petals and glasses of champagne. Whether you want a DJ, a mountain view, or vintage patio furniture, we're pretty sure you'll find what you're looking for here.

Hilton Sedona, a 219-room resort located in northern Arizona's Red Rock country, was recently TAG-approved for its commitment to LGBT travelers. What's more, last September, it hosted the Sedona Pride on the Rocks Festival, which drew all sorts of fun-seeking folks from the entire Verde Valley region. And if the 2012 bash is anything like last year's, guests at the hotel can expect a private pool party, a drag show "Gay-La," and of course, the main festival itself, which takes place among the resort's three heated pools, two restaurants and 20,500 square feet of event space.

Rates start at $179

We know hotel valet parking can be astronomical, but how much do you think it costs to airlift your car onto the pool?

If you're Dwayne Wade, the answer is nada. In yet another installment of The Darndest Things Happen to Hotels When Celebrities are Staying There, the Miami Heat star had a huge 30th birthday bash at The Setai on Sunday night, where he received this lavish gift from a local car dealership.

TMZ has the exclusive photos of the elaborate steps it took to get the 2012 McLaren MP4-12C into the hotel's inner courtyard pool where the party took place, along with a shot of a beaming Wade receiving it.

New Year's Eve at Marriott Denver Tech Center Ends In Major Technology Fail

January 2, 2012 at 9:05 AM | by | Comments (0)

Of all the New Year's Eve parties that took place in hotels on Saturday night, this might be the most action-packed one we've heard about so far. Spread out across two neighboring hotels, the Hyatt Denver Tech Center's "White Rose Gala" and the Marriott Denver Tech Center's "Champagne Hotel" attracted thousands of midnight revelers. And for a while, it was smooth, champagne-fueled sailing.

Until midnight struck, and over 3,000 inebriated Marriott guests tried heading back to their rooms—only to discover they were all locked out! According to MSNBC, a computer error apparently crashed the hotel's entire key card database, and though pretty much everyone was drunk as a bicycle, and ready to collapse into their beds, they all had to wait until 3am to be let back into their rooms.

Making Last-Minute Plans This New Year's Eve? Here's Where To Party

December 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

The champagne is chilled. The DJs are finalizing their playlists. Your sequined outfit is hanging up in your bedroom closet. Now, all you have to do is figure out exactly what you're in the mood for. New Year's Eve is this Saturday night, and though guest lists are filling up quickly, these hotels still have openings. So whether it's a masquerade ball or a tequila tasting or a circus-themed soiree, we guarantee you'll find what you're looking for below.

For people who like to dress up

When The Americano sent us the menu for their new restaurant back in November, we salivated over the "Latin fare with a French flair"-inspired menu (Chile Rellenos, $10; Turbot (flatfish) a la Plancha, $27; Poulet Fermier, $26). Though chef Oliver Reginensi is supposedly moving onto NYC's Le Cirque, he's sticking around long enough to put together a lavish feast for the New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball (above). Choose between a three-course dinner ($95) or a four-course dinner ($200). The first comes with a glass of champagne, the second comes with a whole bottle of Moet a Deux. Take your pick. Afterwards, everyone will take to the lower level for a big ol' dance party.

Hudson Hotel Is Haunted! (And Other Spooky Happenings This Weekend)

Is your costume all ready? We've been working on ours for well over a week (OK, more like fifteen minutes, but hey—we're New Yorkers, we're busy people!). In any case, it looks like there are a few options for you crazy hotel party crashers out there this weekend. From vodka open bars to haunted hotels to a fashion editor-judged costume contest, you certainly won't be twiddling your thumbs!

First up, Hudson Hotel has commissioned the talent of Adam Aleksander to transform the entire hotel into a creepy, crawly, underworld lair. Each of the hotel's three venues (Hudson Hall, Hudson Bar, and Library Bar), in addition to hosting eight separate DJ acts on Saturday night, will morph into different "concepts" like the formaldehyde-ridden Laboratory, Overgrown Swamp, and Butcher's Den.

Scared yet? It only gets better!
