New and Neat Melia Hotel Düsseldorf Open Now

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Inselstrasse 2, Düsseldorf, Germany, 40479
November 5, 2009 at 2:19 PM | by amandak | 1 Comment

Popped into our Hotelchatter Flickr Pool recently (thanks, jochenb) were some pics of a new hotel in the Sol Melia Hotel group: the Melia Hotel Düsseldorf, Germany. It's just opened up last month and is certainly lookin' neat and tidy, if the photos are anything to go by.

More info about the new Melia: it's right in the center of Düsseldorf, and it's opposite the Hofgarten, famous for being the oldest public park in the whole of Germany. And it's close to shopping and sightseeing districts, and most conveniently, just a ten-minute drive from the airport.

The Düsseldorf Melia has some opening offer rates starting with their basic double room at €99 ($145) or €139 ($205) with breakfast – that does sound like a lot more for a morning meal, but German breakfasts can be quite lavish affairs (we're not guaranteeing anything here though).

Torrance Gets a Sleek, Green Japanese 'Hybrid' Hotel

Los Angeles is just the kind of city that embraces cool cultural influences, particularly those from the far East—and we're not just talking about the multitude of sushi restaurants in greater LA County. We've seen contemporary tea houses, high end hot spring spas, and we just got news that a thoroughly Japanese hotel, The Miyako Hybrid, will soon be opening its doors to the public.

The Miyako line is apparently well-known in Japan for being ultra-modern and sleek, so its arrival in the City of Angels comes as no surprise. What's shocking is that you won't find it sharing block space in Beverly Hills or West Hollywood, but in Torrance of all places. We're scratching our heads right alongside you. That's not a dig against Torrance, but, quite honestly, it seems like the target audience of such a hotel is more accessible in the trendy heart of LA, not deep in the South Bay.

Morocco's New Mazagan Beach Resort Opens With a Bang

November 3, 2009 at 10:15 AM | by MsRebecca | 0 Comments

Fireworks. Fire eaters. Snake charmers—just another night for Lindsay Lohan. (And, no, those are not euphemisms.) If yesterday’s report of LiLo’s alleged tryst with Gerard Butler got your heart racing and you want to follow suit, here’s a little more info on where the action went down.

The Mazagan Beach Resort is located in El Jadida, Morocco, about 55 miles southwest of Casablanca. So, yeah, romance is built right into the sand dunes. And there’s a lot of ’em here: the resort sits on a 4.3 mile beach and you can see the ocean from many of the 500 5-star rooms and suites.

The best way to picture the sprawl of Mazagan? Just think of one of owner Sol Kerzner’s other celeb-magnet properties, such as Atlantis in the Bahamas. The mega-resort includes an 18-hole golf course, a spa offering traditional Moroccan treatments, three kids’ clubs, 11 restaurants and bars, the Mazagan casino, and the Sanctuary Night Club, which promises parties “New York style.” Oh yeah, and there’s a huge conference center if you think you can talk your boss into a corporate retreat in the vein of the OTT Mazagan opening party. (The economy’s looking up, right?)

Kimpton's Next Hotel in NYC Will Be Quite an Eventi

Where: 835 6th Ave [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001
November 2, 2009 at 11:59 AM | by MsRebecca | 1 Comment

Now that Ink48 is up and running, it’s time for the seemingly unstoppable folks at Kimpton to start focusing on their next New York property: Hotel Eventi in Chelsea. As with some of its other properties (such as Miami’s Epic), the hotel will share space with apartments, in this case rentals. The Eventi will also share its entire-city-block with retail stores and an outdoor plaza with public seating.

Even better, the developers plan to construct a 20-foot wide screen to be used in the plaza for public and private events. The hotel’s restaurant will also have a long dining terrace overlooking the plaza.

Exterior construction has been progressing above Sixth Avenue in recent months, so it must be almost time to send in the interiors designer. Colum McCartan will bring Eventi’s 287 guest rooms to life, while Philip Koether Architects and Syd Mead will work on the multi-level bar and restaurant, which will be operated by China Grill Management, and the residential section of the building. There are no room renderings to peek at just yet but for an idea of McCartan’s work, take a look at his interiors at Le Parker Meridien New York, Hotel Adagio and Hotel Vitale in San Francisco, and Hotel Sax in Chicago.

Lohan Gets It On (Allegedly) With Gerard Butler at Morocco Hotel Opening

Go To The Hotel's Web

Whatever Halloween horrors you saw this weekend, we doubt it can have been much worse than what Gerard Butler might just have woken up to yesterday morning.

According to the Mirror, Gerard had escaped all those cheap tacky parties in LA to go to the opening night of Sol Kerzner’s swish new Mazagan Beach Resort near Casablanca.

Unfortunately for him, it turned out a bit cheap and tacky anyway, as dear old Lindsay Lohan was among the fellow guests. And apparently, after a couple of bevvies, they went through the old dancin’-flirtin-kissin’ routine at the hotel’s new nightclub, Sanctuary, before “leaving the party together in a golf buggy.” A smooth touch there, Gerard. Really smooth.

Behind Schedule With Your Hotel? Do a Shangri-La And Hedge Your Bets

Site Where: 1 Jianguomenwai Avenue, Beijing, China, 100004
November 2, 2009 at 9:59 AM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Here’s some skewed logic to start your week off. You’re a soon-to-be-open hotel, you’re not sure exactly how long it’s going to take for your paint to dry and your air con to get whirring, and you’re watching other new hotels around the globe getting called out for opening late. What’s the solution?

Well, if you’re Shangri-La, your solution is to hedge your bets. The bizarrely named Shangri-La China World Summit Wing in Beijing was originally slated to open "at the end of the year". And even now, despite Shangri-La just having appointed a GM, they’re not quite sure when it’ll be ready for us to bed down, announcing this weekend that it’ll open "at the end of 2009 or early 2010."

Just How Special is the Introductory Offer at The Surrey? We Do the Math

We love us an introductory offer. It’s always nice to be one of the first guests at a hotel, and score a special rate in the process. But when your regular rates are in the $500-a-night range, how "special" can your intro offer really be? Let’s turn to the Upper East Side’s new darling, The Surrey, shall we?

We can admit from our tour inside that the hotel is gorgeous. But it is a little out of our price range. In the interest of trying to justify blowing our cash on one-night’s stay here, we examined the hotel’s Introductory Offer to see if it was worth it.

Mandarin Oriental Barcelona Will Now Open on November 26th

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Passeig de Gracia 38-40, Barcelona, Spain, 08007
October 29, 2009 at 12:42 PM | by juliab | 0 Comments

Oh Barcelona, you’re pretty n all, but we could do without your mañana mañana attitude spoiling our hotel plans. First the W pushed back its opening date no less than three times, and now it’s the turn of the Mandarin Oriental.

Last time we checked, the hotel was due to open on October 29. But when we hadn't heard any fanfare today, and checked out the hotel’s website to find the calendar showing “no availability”, we smelt a rat.

So we just called Mandarin Oriental’s PR people, and they told us the hotel is scheduled to open on 26 November. So that’s delay number one. But we’re expecting a delay number two, seeing as the website’s not taking reservations until 15 December. Hmm.

Opening rates, if they are opening December 15, are showing up as €284 ($421/£254) at the moment, although there’s an intriguing note on the booking page saying that “most rooms accommodate 3 people.” Er, surely the kind of people paying that amount of money won’t want to share with two others? Unless, of course, we're being, um, naive.

Here’s hoping all will be revealed on 26 November. In the mean time, how nice does that rooftop pool look? Shame it'll be too cold to use when they finally let us in.

The Distrikt Hotel: Where ‘Late Fall’ Means Winter

Get out your Hotel Opening Date Tracking Sheet, friends, because it’s time for a little update on Manhattan’s Distrikt Hotel. We’re dying to see this place: the NYC-neighborhood theme is one of the most interesting we’ve heard of all year, and we can’t wait to see which floors—each named after a different part of the city—will become the most sought after. (It seems apt that the Financial District is on the lowest floor, and Harlem on the highest, no?)

Alas, it looks like we’ll have to wait a few more weeks. While the hotel’s website is still promising an opening in “late fall,” and a press rep for the Distrikt told us the doors would open on November 15th, we’ve since heard that the big day would be pushed back to December 1st.

Antigua's New Sugar Ridge Has A Sweet Opening Deal

October 28, 2009 at 8:49 AM | by amandak | 0 Comments

Picture a hotel called Sugar Ridge and you might imagine some place on the ridge of a hill bordered by sugar cane … and that's exactly what the new Sugar Ridge hotel in Antigua looks like. Four years after they started building (and no doubt a while after they had serious doubts whether building a hotel was the right thing to do at the moment) the Sugar Ridge is ready to open on December 1.

They're aiming for luxury and affordability, often a tricky combination, and the luxury includes the Sugar Club Spa – the first Aveda spa on Antigua. There are just 60 rooms but there are two restaurants, along with two swimming pools and a shopping arcade. It's also very close to the Jolly Harbor Marina which has an 18-hole golf course.

W Boston and Its 'Cosmopolitan Cool' Will Open on Thursday

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 100 Stuart Street [map], Boston, MA, United States, 02116
October 27, 2009 at 11:43 AM | by juliana | 0 Comments

The last time we checked on the W Boston, the hotel was set to open October 22nd except the opening has now been delayed until October 29th. But if you're looking to spend Halloween weekend here, the hotel is not showing any availability.

Could they be sold-out or just not quite open to guests? We're not sure. However, next weekend, Nov. 6-8, is open for your "Sensory Pilgrimage" at $260 a night for a Wonderful non-smoking room. A studio suite is also available for $350.

The rooms are predictable W style, they didn't re-invent the wheel here or anything as the rooms promise high-design, high-technology and cleverly nicknamed amenities. (Munchie Box anyone?) Interestingly, we see that this W is actively advertising "Free Wireless High Speed Internet Access" in public areas like the hotel's Living Room. We can't wait to test out that connection.

W Barcelona May Be Stylish, But Still Needs To Work On Service

Last time we looked, the W Barcelona wasn’t going down so well with its clients. But then that was after opening weekend, nearly a month ago. Is it time to give it another chance?

The Independent reviewed it this weekend and, going by the review, it'd seem the “abysmal” service and “no edgy people” may have been teething problems.

The hotel is “nothing if not striking”, they say, and the pool is “bracingly cool” (we're assuming that's in a literal sense - it's nearly November, after all). The views from the 26th-floor Eclipse bar, meanwhile, are “bewitching”.
