Aside From The Protests, Wall Street Still Has Plenty To Offer
After everything we've been reading about Occupy Wall Street, we thought it might be good to hear from someone who actually lives or works there. And who better than Toni Hinterstoisser, GM of Andaz Wall Street—the only hotel actually located on Wall Street. Toni's been with the hotel since its opening in 2010, and is something of an expert on the hot button 'hood.
So, without further ado...

27th Street Is The Place To Be, And Hotel Americano Knows It

Every once in a while, a well-timed hotel opening reaps the benefits of an emerging neighborhood. The thrill of new commerce, fresh design, and an influx of curious culture hounds create a recipe for success. And the Hotel Americano, Chelsea's newest 56-room "Latin-influenced" boutique, has positioned itself at the center of the action. If you want in on their September opening, you better make a move!
The hotel's surrounding area, occasionally known as Far West Chelsea, is completely throwing off its reputation as barren, remote, and middle-of-nowhere; and claiming itself as a major cultural destination. Here's why: though restaurants and bars remain scarce, the area's built-in audience is a jackpot. Nearby, sits the 2.2 million square foot Starrett-Leigh building (Martha Stewart, Hugo Boss, Club Monaco, Assouline. Down the street, the historic McKittrick Hotel hosts the wildly popular interactive theater production Sleep No More. And the newly-opened Section Two of the High Line is (literally) a stone's throw away.

Dalston Is Lining Up Its Hotels But Who Should Be Staying There?

Dalston. It's a place you might not really have heard of, but it seems to be the new place in London to open a hotel, what with the Avo Hotel about to hit us, and another, as yet unnamed property on its way as well. So if this is the shape of things to come, we thought it was time to give you the lowdown. Dalston will be perfect for some travelers, the opposite for others. So make sure you know where you stand before you book.
Dalston is in East London, part of the borough of Hackney (and near the 2012 Olympics site). Transport options aren't great - to get to tourist-friendly areas like Oxford Circus, the South Bank or Covent Garden will take about an hour. You can either get a bus, or hop on the overground to either Highbury and Islington or Hampstead Heath. From there, you can change to the Victoria or Northern Line, respectively. So getting into town is doable, but a bit of a faff.
Then there's the reputation. Which, simply put, is that Hackney = dangerous. Is it true? Yes and no. Hackney does have a high crime rate and gets a lot of bad press but keep your wits about you - no walking down dark alleys waving dollar bills and looking lost - you’re likely to be OK. Due to the nightlife, the area around Kingsland Road (see below) is busy 24/7, so staying on the main streets means you'll never be alone.

What's That 'Garden' In Front of The James New York?

As we slowly inch towards summer, our minds have been turning to rooftop bars, especially the ones at all the new NYC hotels opening this year. But there's another outdoor space that's becoming popular: the garden or courtyard.
The Crosby Street Hotel has one, and Trump Soho and Eventi both promise big public plazas. But what's this strange little garden that sits in front of The James New York? (It's hard to see in this nighttime shot, but if you peer through that fence you can see tufts of grass!)

New York's Fashion 26 to Offer Prime Tyra and Martha-Spotting

Often with hotels, location is everything. And in New York, the hottest areas for hotels right now are SoHo—The Crosby Street Hotel just opened there, and a Trump and Mondrian will open next year—and Midtown West, which has The Distrikt and The Strand opening soon. A little further south of those Midtown hotels is Fashion 26: A Wyndham Hotel, which promises to open this winter. Like most hotels, Fashion 26 lists nearby attractions on its website: the Museum of Sex, Madison Square Park, and Macy’s Herald Square. It also takes a big cue from its neighbor, the Fashion Institute of Technology.

What's On the Block at the Andaz Liverpool Street?

In this regular feature on HotelChatter, we choose a hotel and take a look at what other businesses or buildings are on its block. Because what's close by is nearly just as important as what's inside the hotel.
Today it’s the turn of Andaz Liverpool Street, which was named this summer as the best hotel in the world for “party people”.
The official blurb says that:
Located adjacent to Liverpool Street Station, the hotel provides easy access to areas both in and around London, with good connections to the Eurostar terminal and all major airports, including a direct connection on the Stansted Express to Stansted airport.
The main attractions of Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Tate Modern and Spitalfields Market are all within walking distance, and the shopping hub of Oxford Street only a 7minute Tube ride away.
So far, so boring.

What's On the Block at The Strand Hotel?

In this regular feature on HotelChatter, we choose a hotel and take a look at what other businesses or buildings are on its block. Because what's close by is nearly just as important as what's inside the hotel.
Today we look at one of our 10 Hot New York City Hotel Openings, The Strand Hotel.
This is how they describe their locale:
the 20-floor Strand Hotel is ideally located just around the corner from the Empire State Building, steps from prime NYC shopping, the Theatre District, Madison Square Garden, Bryant Park, Grand Central Station and much more.
And they’re right. This is a fantastic, central location. Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, the New York Public Library, and all those places they mention are all within walking distance. And you will never go hungry or want for touristy tschokes. But here’s the “much more”—what you’ll find on the actual block itself, on W. 37th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

What's On The Block at The Distrikt Hotel?

In a new regular feature on HotelChatter, we'll choose a hotel and take a look at what other businesses or buildings are on its block. Because what's close by is nearly just as important as what's inside the hotel.
Today we strolled by one of the hotels listed on our 10 Hot New York City Hotel Openings, The Distrikt Hotel. The hotel describes its location like this: "Located in the heart of Manhattan on West 40th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues in Midtown Manhattan". And "steps away from The New York Times Building and Times Square." Technically, this is true. But there’s a few other things the funky-sounding hotel is not telling you....
