Whenever Hotel Indigo NYC Opens, It'll Have Absurdly High Rates

Where: 127 West 28th Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001

| June 24, 2009 at 11:31 AM | 0 Comments

Hotel Indigo, the funky-fresh youthful stepchild of InterContinental, was supposed to make its grand debut in Manhattan sometime in July (last we checked, anyway — though we weren't really sure whether or not we cared much about it). However, not so: the property's website is now accepting rezzies for January 4, 2010 and beyond.

Does that mean the property won't open earlier than the new year? No. But does that mean it definitely won't be opening in July? Yes.

The Hotel Indigo Chelsea (yes, it's on West 28th Street and still touts itself as "walking distance" to Times Square — which, to be fair, is probably perfectly reasonable for New Yorkers) was the cause of our eye-rolling not long ago because it recommended things like eating hot dogs and strolling through Central Park (not exactly a game-changer here), but get ready for this: rates are starting at $425.00 for the night of January 4th.

Um, excuse you?

Hotel Indigo San Diego Gets a Cool Sheet of Glass

The Hotel Indigo San Diego is now set to open July 13 and while previously we touched on the hotel's green offerings, we didn't have any real photos of the place. But thankfully, now we do.

Here are some exterior shots of the hotel which feature a four-story glass sculpture titled “Indigo Waters” by local San Diego artist Lisa Schirmer. (That's what great about Hotel Indigo--they incorporate as much artwork from local artists as they can.) And lest you think this is just another pretty sculpture, there's actually some serious mathematics behind it. From the hotel:

The underpinning of the Hotel Indigo brand’s design and décor can be attributed to the Fibonacci sequence and the ratio known as the Golden Mean (or Phi). These math principles are found in nature and can be seen in the perfect proportion of the nautilus shell, which is represented in the Hotel Indigo brand logo. Adopting this mathematical ratio as a design principle helps create a feeling of balance and effortless beauty within the space.

“The idea behind the sculpture is to create a wavelike pattern of indigo colors by rotating and repeating square and quarter circle shapes on square glass panels,” said Schirmer. The glass panels are arranged vertically in a Fibonacci sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) in seven layers on a curved outside wall of the hotel. As daylight shifts, the glass will create a dramatic mix of color and movement; tasteful back-lighting at night will create a new composition of colors.

Very cool. Also inside the hotel, local photographer Ian Cummings will have his photos of native plants and water-driven imagery on display in the guestrooms, the hotel lobby, the hotel's Phi Bar and Bistro and other public areas.

Room rates for Hotel Indigo San Diego will begin at $199 a night.

Another shot of the hotel's exterior and the sculpture is after the jump.

Brands Born in the Recession: Where Are They Now?

| June 22, 2009 at 1:16 PM | 4 Comments

It's no secret that the economy has had a massive impact on the hotel industry. Hotel openings have been delayed; construction has been halted on properties in development; jobs have been lost; room rates have been slashed — but the last several years also saw a boom in the introduction of new brands and a handful of entirely new, supposedly game-changing segments (the "budget chic" pack, for example).

Naturally, with the introduction of each new brand came a wave of hype and some big, big expansion plans — and then came the recession. Needless to say, those big plans changed.

Here's a look at the current state of some of those newer brands — a progress report, if you will — that outlines how many properties each brand had planned on when the concept was introduced, how many properties they've actually opened as of mid-2009, and, of course, how they're faring out there in the cold, brutal world.

What Kind of Internet Can You Expect at Hotel Indigo?

| March 24, 2009 at 3:42 PM | 0 Comments

InterContinental's hip, "branded-boutique" Hotel Indigo chain has been expanding on the double.

Some say Indigo is IHG's answer to Starwood's W Hotels; some say it was the precursor to all those lifestyle boutique hotels going up all over the place these days, like Aloft, Element, Hyatt's Andaz and good ol' Denizen. The first property opened up in 2006 and since then it has been targeting the younger business traveler in U.S. locations from Scottsdale to NYC. So yes, Indigo: you have arrived; you are expanding — but the real question is: what's your Internet sitch?

De Niro's Greenwich Hotel Feeling the Economic Burn

| February 12, 2009 at 5:28 PM | 3 Comments

There's tons of hotel news flying around this week and we don't have time to give each and every story the love and attention it may deserve, so you will have to settle for some news briefs.

· The Top 21 Examples of Stylish Hotel Design: Men.Style.com is just as fond of lists as we are, and their latest is pretty slick; they've compiled their favorite design touches in hotels, which oddly includes "the silence in the lobby at The Bowery Hotel." [Men.Style]

· De Niro's Greenwich Hotel Half-Empty?: A Curbed operative overheard at a community board meeting that The Greenwich Hotel is struggling with a 50% occupancy rate. Trouble in taxi driver paradise! [Curbed]

· A Fourth in Florida for Hotel Indigo: It's not just London they're conquering, but also Florida as the "unpretentious" Hotel Indigo is scheduled to open this year in Miami Lakes, Miami Beach, St. Petersburg, and Ft. Myers. [HNR]

· Dubai's Palazzo Versace Hires a Decorator: You'd think that a design company would be able to outfit their own hotel, but no, as they've hired interior decorators. [Arabian Biz]

Inside the Hotel Indigo London Paddington

It’s hard to get a slot in the news at the moment what with global recession, Obama’s honeymoon and the recent snow bringing London to a standstill. So you can forgive Hotel Indigo for opting for a surefire PR stunt approach when it opened its first non-US hotel in Paddington, London, at the end of January, by dangling a giant hanging basket from a first floor window.

The basket had gone by the time we got round to visiting it on Friday (the council had ordered it to be taken down). Instead it had been replaced by a purply glow around the front entrance proclaiming Hotel Indigo.

The outside looks cute, with checked paving, seating for the café and outdoor heaters, although we weren’t fans of the door opening out towards us – if we’d had a heavy suitcase, we might have been worried it’d take a swing at us.

One woman was on reception, with another guy milling around. They were both very pleasant, if a little slow. We were here to meet someone, rather than check in, though, so we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt as to whether they’d be dim with actual customers.

The Hotel Indigo Scottsdale Has Interesting Wallpaper

Go To The Hotel's Web

As we mentioned last week Hotel Indigo is planning an aggressive expansion, meaning that everywhere us guests turn we might find a new Hotel Indigo. If you aren't familiar with the philosophy behind HI, it's to be a personalized hotel experience for the frequent business traveler, and not every hotel is alike.

Personalization is achieved through amenities and services like oversized beds and pillows, free wireless and lobbies that are conducive for post-work socializing, but also by incorporating much of the hotel's local flavor into the design. Some of this stuff makes sense, like artwork from local artists displayed in the lobbies and rooms. Some of it does not make sense, like the giant hanging floral basket at the just-opened Hotel Indigo Paddington in London.

Anyways, since we might be seeing more of Indigo in the future, we thought we'd show you this Flickr shot of a room inside the Hotel Indigo Scottsdale. Yes, that's cactus photo wallpaper. Um. Ouch?

Room rates at this hotel start at around $209 a night. The Paddington branch.

Gigantic Hanging Basket Affixed to London's New Hotel Indigo

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 16 London St, London, United Kingdom, W2 IHL

| January 22, 2009 at 10:30 AM | 0 Comments

Proving that it's not just crazy Americans who love big travel stunts, the Hotel Indigo chain is celebrating the opening of their first hotel outside of the United States by affixing the world's largest hanging basket to the facade. The new London property in Paddington opened to guests on Tuesday, but construction workers spent eight hours of Monday installing the quarter-ton basket of real roses, ivy, orchids, daisies and moss.

Designed to promote the hotel's changing seasonal decor ("to keep it feeling brand new"), the basket hangs 25 feet above the Indigo's entrance. A brief montage of the making of what's being called "The Hanging Gardens of Paddington" can be viewed on YouTube, of course.

If we are to judge anything from Indigo's saying that they "...hope that our hanging garden will become a wonder of London," it's that this thing appears to be permanent. If so, do request one of their £125-a-night rooms far away from the thing as we're sure it'll become a nice breeding place for spiders and a natural nest for birds.

Hotel Indigo Opens in London and More To Come

| January 20, 2009 at 3:28 PM | 0 Comments

It appears that InterContinental's hip, boutiquey Hotel Indigo brand has major expansion plans. If you'll recall, Indigo is IHG's answer to Starwood's W Hotels and the precursor to all the lifestyle boutique brands popping up today like Aloft,Element, Hyatt's Andaz and NYLO. IHG opened its first property in 2006 and since then it has been targeting the younger business traveler in U.S. locations from Scottsdale to NYC.

And now they've landed overseas: ABTN reports the opening of the first Indigo in Europe, the Hotel Indigo London - Pattington, and they've got an big plans to spread outside North America quickly. Per ABTN:

At the opening of the 64-room hotel in the west London district of Paddington, Andrew Cosslett, IHG's ceo, announced that contracts for three more Indigos in the UK had also been signed. All will be based in London and are due to open by 2012.

Contracts for a 180-room Indigo in Shanghai had also been signed and this hotel is due to open in 2010.

While we're well-aware this trend of opening hotels geared toward younger travelers is still on the upswing, we can't help but wonder when all this development is going to calm down — especially given the amount of delays and suspended hotel projects lately. Also, Indigo is all about incorporating local flavor into each hotel — we're interested to see how they can pull that off as the chain gets bigger and bigger.

New York's Hotel Indigo Has an Opening Date, But Should You Care?

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 127 West 28th Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001

| December 9, 2008 at 10:07 AM | 3 Comments

Hey now! New York City’s first Hotel Indigo—the “branded boutique” hotel chain has an opening date: July 9.

And boy, oh boy, we can’t wait. What with the helpful detail available on the hotel’s web site, we can tell this hotel will be a bastion of all things hips and trendy in Manhattan. Touting itself as “100% smoke free” (how novel!) and minutes from JFK (not really true when you’re located in Chelsea), the hotel also suggests its guests hit up such must-sees as Times Square and claim no one can go home without eating a hot dog in Central Park.

Really? Is that the best you’ve got, Hotel Indigo? Because in a crowded New York market recommending Times Square and hot dogs is hardly the way stand out. Also, since other Hotels Indigos have been known to offer some bad rates (see here and here), we're sort of dreading the rates this hotel will be offering.

"Escape the In-Laws" at a Hotel Indigo Near You

| December 1, 2008 at 4:55 PM | 0 Comments

Hotel Indigo has released a new survey today that yields some not-so-surprising results about spending holidays with in-laws:

One-third (36%) of Americans would rather check into a hotel than stay with family and an astounding 97 percent would rather not stay with their in-laws. Findings show that while travelers are looking to spend the holidays with family, they simply don’t want to stay with them!

Wow, you know what would be good right now? A package tailored to those of us who don't want to stay with our families over the holidays? And whaddya know, Hotel Indigo has just announced their “Escape the In-Laws” package.

The package runs from now through January 14, 2009 and includes a room, breakfast for two and a "Family Decompression Kit." The kit includes all the essentials like aspirin, aromatherapy oil and a bottle of wine. Sadly, a remote control that would mute your mother when she starts talking about your unhealthy lifestyle is not included. Room rates start at $129.

Hotel Indigo Chicago Giving Guests $25 Target and Best Buy Gift Cards

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 450 North Milwaukee Avenue [map], Vernon Hills, IL, United States, 60061

| October 30, 2008 at 3:47 PM | 0 Comments

Hotels are still piling on incentives for guests in the midst of the economic downturn and the latest hotel to "Escape the Economy" woes is the Hotel Indigo Chicago-Vernon Hills which is offering guests $25 gift cards to either Target or Best Buy. From the press release:

With its new Economic Stimulus rate, guests booking a stay at the hotel from now through the end of the year will receive an "intriguing" rate along with a $25 Target or Best Buy(R) gift card.

These intriguing rates are part of the Economic Stimulus Package on the hotel's website which start at around $104 a night. The deal is actually good through the end of January with the only blackout date being New Years Eve.

However, if you care more about spending less on your hotel stay than receiving a gift card, you may just want to book a regular room rate. We found one for Dec. 5-7th at $89 a night. You can even knock that down to $80 if you do an advance purchase rate.

It's your choice--cheaper hotel room or the chance to raid the $1 bin at Target with a gift card. Both sound good to us.
