Best Western Housekeepers Will Be Zapping Rooms Cleans

May 30, 2012 at 1:29 PM | by | Comments (0)

This kind of seems like an April Fool's Day joke but according to USA Today, Best Western Hotels are seriously going to start using blacklights as housekeeping tools to ensure that their rooms get a deep clean.

In response to what it says is travelers' insistence on cleanliness, Best Western is equipping its housekeeping crews with equipment you'd most likely see on the forensic investigation TV series: black lights to detect biological matter otherwise unseen by the human eye, and ultraviolet light wands to zap it.

Ah, that last bit is key--the ultraviolet wand (like the one pictured above) to get rid of all those nasty, nasty germs like e-coli, H1N1, salmonella and norovirus.

It's Probably Never A Good Idea To Sneak Up On A NYC Hotel Maid

February 8, 2012 at 10:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

The New York Times ran an interesting piece today on a contract reached between union members and the major NYC hotels that employ them. Among other tidbits, we learn that hotels will soon be providing employees with their own personal panic buttons.

The decision, clearly influenced by a certain scandal at Sofitel New York involving a certain IMF chief last year, is a sure victory for housekeepers and room-service waiters and waitresses everywhere.

As long as they don't get button-happy, of course, and start panicking every time a door slams shut. But still, the less we see of this kind of thing, the better.

Just Wondering, Where Did the George V Get the Inspiration for Their 'Tips' Video?

As we were watching the video for the new Four Seasons website, we noticed another video from the Four Seasons's YouTube Channel featuring Housekeeping "Tips" from the Four Seasons George V, one of the best hotels in the Four Seasons collection (not to mention one of the priciest.)

So of course we had to watch. The video's instructions are entirely in French but those who can't parlez-vous Francais can still easily learn how to make the bed, insert a duvet, put on pillowcases, clean the bathtub, clean the mirrors and scrub the bath fixtures (ok, this last one would have been a little more helpful if we had understood French.)

These tips were fun to watch but we couldn't help but wonder---where ever did they get the idea to do this video? Could the Trump Housekeeping Tips that Trump Hotels shared with us early this year have been the inspiration?

The Sofitel Housekeeper Speaks Out About DSK Assault

July 25, 2011 at 8:45 AM | by | Comments (0)

New details of the alleged sexual assault of a hotel houskeeper by former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn have come out--this time from the housekeeper herself.

Nafissatou Diallo recently sat down for an interview with both Newsweek magazine and ABC News revealing not only her name but also her face. Her story is graphic and at times painful to read, especially when she says doctors found a partial ligament tear in her left shoulder weeks after the incident, weeks after DSK allegedly forced her to perform oral sex on him.

DSK's defense team is still insisting that any sexual contact, however rough it may have been, was consensual (there is undeniable DNA evidence that a sexual interaction occurred.) But even if Diallo's story of the sexual attack is true, some of her statements still don't match up.

Turndown Service: It was the Maid in the Fairmont with a Candlestick

August 28, 2007 at 7:19 PM | by | Comments (0)

Sorry, we are a little nostalgic for the Clue board game. Anyways, two maids on the housekeeping staff at the Fairmont Copley Plaza were charged yesterday with stealing $100,000 worth of jewelry from hotel guests.

Meanwhile, we left our fake diamond earrings at the Mandarin Oriental Spa in New York and they thankfully held onto the them for three days until we returned to the city to pick them up.
