Is This a Record? Gaylord Hotels are Putting Up the Christmas Decor Already

July 22, 2015 at 9:35 AM | by | ()

We’re more than halfway through July, and there’s plenty of summer to be had in hotels across the globe—well at least the top half the globe. That doesn’t mean that hotels aren't looking forward to the holiday season, though - in fact, some properties are already busy heading up to the attic and taking an inventory of the Christmas decorations.

Gaylord Hotels—now part of the Marriott family—are beavering away getting ready for the holidays at four of their larger resorts. With properties having between 1,000 and 2,000 guestrooms there’s a lot of work to be done, as trees, wreathes, ornaments, and lights just don’t go and appear on their own. In Nashville it sounds like the lighting work has already begun—probably to give them time to figure out which one light is turning off the whole damn string of lights.

Who dat?

Oh, no one. It’s just a Christmas elf working on the life-size gingerbread house at the Hyatt Regency New Orleans.

No, you’re not looking at it through a French Quarter-infused haze. Yes, life-size means human-sized – it’s 14 feet long, 15 feet high and 8 feet wide, and is the work of Exec chef Eric Damidot and his little helpers. Here are the stats:
· 500 sheets of gingerbread, made of:

From tasty to tasteful – this is the Christmas display in the window at Belgraves, Thompson’s London outpost.

No blinged up trees or chocolate santas for them; this is a 3D winter woodland scene, handmade by paper cutter Terry Jackson. There are eight layers to the installation, and it’s backlit – that’s what gives it a 3D effect. Here's a close-up:

88 Pounds of Chocolate Went into This Christmas Display at Dublin's The Marker

That’s a paltry little holiday display, you might say, observing the santa-sleigh-tree combo in the lobby of Dublin’s The Marker hotel. These trendy hotels. Too cool for Christmas. SMH. By the way, why does the lobby smell of chocolate?

Then, if you got up close to the santa, you would realize your terrible mistake. I have maligned the Marker, you would say. This santa-sleigh-tree is so well done that I had no idea it was entirely made of chocolate and icing. This is actually the most fabulous Christmas display in the world!

The Ace DTLA Is Almost Too Cool for Christmas, But Not Quite

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in hotel-land. Trees. Baubles. Gingerbread houses. Scented candles – they have it all. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be picking out some of our favorite decorations. Got some OTT trees of your own? Send ‘em in to tips@hotelchatter.com!

What does a hipster hotel do for Christmas? Well, if it’s the Ace DTLA, the answer is that it eschews the traditional tree (so bourgeois!) in favor of a stylish, understated nod to the holiday season.

Enter the Christmas gifts on top of the photo booth, above, which went up a couple of days ago.

But the Ace isn’t really too cool for school, and it can’t resist a good old gingerbread house anymore than the posh hotel across the pond. So down at the Coffee Counter (at the entrance to LA Chapter, the restaurant), you’ll find this glorious representation of the hotel itself:

The Merrion Dublin Has Two Doppelganger Christmas Trees

The Christmas tree at the Merrion, Dublin’s poshest home-from-home-style hotel, took all day to put together on 1 December. Staff – led by the hotel florist – worked all morning and into the night in order to put each bauble in the correct place. But enjoy it while you can, because the Merrion tree’s lifespan is a short one – it’ll be taken down and replaced with a doppelganger on Thursday.

These 5 Hotels Scream For National Ice Cream Day

July 15, 2011 at 10:30 AM | by | ()

Ever since we watched Macaulay Culkin order room service from his Plaza suite in Home Alone 2, we've fantasized about combining two of life's greatest pleasures: ice cream and fancy hotels. This Sunday happens to be National Ice Cream Day (don't say you've never heard of it!), as declared by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, and we've done our best to compile the top hotel participants.

LOEWS HOTELS

The pet-loving Loews hotel chain has been celebrating ice cream all month long, so now it's time to catch up. From 4pm to 5pm daily, roaming carts filled with bomb pops, ice cream sandwiches, fudgesicles and creamsicles will be stationed in the lobbies of all 18 Loews Hotel properties across North America. For free!
