You know the weather is getting warmer in the Midwest when Chicago starts dusting off the barbecue tongs. To herald the imminent arrival of summer and all the gently charred kielbasa that comes along with, the Affinia Hotel is pairing up with The James to host a rigorous BBQ Bootcamp.

Lay down several hundred dollars for a two-night stay package at either property, or purchase individual event tickets for $75, and learn the ropes of gourmet BBQ-ing. Sadly you won't be instructed by the dude pictured above. Instead, star chef David Burke of The James' David Burke Primehouse Restaurant and Marcus Samuelsson of Affinia's C-House will share meat and seafood grilling tips and techniques, host a tasting, and raise a glass at a cocktail reception. Here's what you'll be getting yourself into:

If you're reading this, then we think it's fair to assume that you like blogs, or at least don't mind them. And since you're reading about hotels, then perhaps it's safe to postulate that you may also have a thing for architecture, or maybe trendy interior design? If you're game for a little party involving all of these (blogs, hotels, architecture and design), then the Standard Downtown LA may just have you booked up next week.

W Scottsdale Enters the Scene with Poolside Fashion Show

The dust has barely settled around the W Scottsdale as it braces to enter its third month of operations, which means it is time to party down and give this place a reputation. Luckily, the W is two steps ahead and already targeting their favorite niche of hotel guests: the fashionistas.

Tomorrow the hotel will host a Terexov Fashion Show poolside, a la Chanel's resort collection at The Raleigh, although the designer presenting is a 20-something Russian and not a French house of couture. Since we just happened to be at Terexov's Spring 2009 Runway Show during New York Fashion Week, we can attest to the fact that the man does tropical jet set fashion very well. His outfits are for goddesses of global mobility, a few of whom will be watching tomorrow from the W Scottsdale's cabanas.

As this is obviously a grab at situating themselves as a hotspot for style, we think this is a pretty good move for the W Scottsdale to make; after all, fashion shows are so hot right now. And maybe the neighbors won't be so pissed now that there's beautiful models walking around the place.

Omni Hotels To Celebrate Election Night

October 21, 2008 at 4:35 PM | by | Comments (0)

We wonder if Sarah Palin knew that when she checked into an Omni Hotel in New York, just how excited Omni Hotels was about the election?

On Election Night, Omni Hotels across America will be hosting "Election Night Returns" in their lobbies and lounges from 6 to 10pm.

Presidential-themed menu items will include:
· The Red Recovery - Citrus vodka and triple sec with cranberry juice and Sprite
· The Stock Market Blues - Citrus vodka and blue Curacao with soda and Sprite
· "Pull the Lever" Loaded-Up Nachos - Red and blue corn tortilla chips loaded with chilies, jalapenos, chicken, avocado, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream
· Poll Sliders - Mini burgers with cheese, grilled diced onions, pickle, tomatoes and fries
· Open Face "Pork Belly" Sandwich - Pulled pork with BBQ sauce, cole slaw and fries
· The All-American Patriot Apple Pie - a large slice, served a la mode.

What? No Joe the Plumber Mac and Cheese?

But aside from the food and drinks, it might be worth it to show up at an Omni on Election Night. Guests and locals who attend can fill out a ballot for a drawing to win a weekend stay in the hotel's Presidential Suite.

If you hit up an Omni Hotel on Election Night, you must must MUST tell us how it went.

Philly Hotels Going All Out for Their Sports Teams

October 21, 2008 at 12:45 PM | by | Comments (3)

Whether you are rooting for the Phillies, the Eagles, or your own fantasy team, you will have a place to cheer on your players at these Philadelphia hotels.

According to the city's blog, Uwishunu, the Bellevue Hotel is hosting a pep rally for the Phillies as they head into the World Series. It takes place tomorrow (October 22) in the hotel's main lobby.

The Whiz Kids Band will perform, Phillies ballgirls will be handing out rally towels, and there will be free pretzels. Enter a raffle to win Phillies gear all day with the winners announced at 5 p.m.

The party then moves to the XIX bar where cocktails and craft brews are half-price during happy hour from 5-7pm.

Over at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, the hotel is hosting an NFL tailgate brunch every Sunday for $26.50 a person. That includes an all-you-can-eat cornucopia of breakfast treats and large flat-screen TVs tuned to the game as well as in-booth flat screen TVs.

So you can watch your hometown team on the flat-screen and follow your top fantasy players in-booth. That sounds kinda awesome to us. Except we don't root for any Philly teams.

Beer Hopes to Prevail Again In Rancho Bernardo Inn's Beer v. Wine Rematch

October 15, 2008 at 3:17 PM | by | Comment (1)

There are the classic battles: Chevy vs. Ford, Mac vs. PC, Girls vs. Boys, Red Sox vs. Yankees, Good vs. Evil...

And one of these will finally get settled. Friday, Rancho Bernardo Inn's El Bizcocho restuarant is serving up a Beer vs. Wine Dinner for you to decide. In a rematch of last year's battle, wines selected by Sommelier Barry Wiss and beers chosen by Stone Brewing Company's CEO Greg Koch will battle head to head. Competition is fierce:

Make no mistake, on October 17 the gloves will come off once again. Last year's winner, Koch says, "I have no hesitation in arguing that beer will once again prevail, since more often than not it is a superior mate to great food," while Wiss says, "Nothing compares to the pairing of a wonderfully crafted wine with fine food, and we will raise the bar even higher this year to ensure we come out on top."

How far would you go to win a free night? Would you dress up as a French maid and go to a party full of people dressed up as French maids swilling absinthe?

And if people are dressed up as French maids--opposed to actual French maids, which we aren't sure truly exist--then we know they're slutty French maids. Um. Awkward. A little bit like a high school movie. Or another kind of movie.

So this is the premise for Maison 140's "Spirits of Halloween" party and you're invited! If you can't resist a good contest, show up in your maid costume and be in the running for six prizes including an overnight stay for two, and wine and cheese tastings.

We all know that Kimpton Hotels love their daily wine and cheese-tasting hours in the lobby, but have you ever wanted something a little stronger, a little more fulfilling?

Well, if you're staying at the Hotel Palomar Westwood in Los Angeles, then you're in luck.

The hotel's excellent BLVD 16 restaurant just announced a Happy Hour from 4-7pm where diners can score select items from the bar menu at 50 percent off. Such items include Marinated Olives, Wild Mushroom Crostini, Crispy Local Calamari, Herb Kennebec Fries, Summertime Tempura, and Charcuterie.

The restaurant/bar is also serving new "Special-Teas" cocktails at $6 a piece.

And because of the tea-fusion cocktails, the restaurant is calling their Happy Hour "Tea Time." Ha! While we do love our high hotel teas, this one definitely beats Earl Grey and finger sandwiches.

Another reason why this happy hour is good for you? Everything sold inside BLVD 16 is locally produced. Word.

Alright, let's be real with each other here: a lot of LA hotel pool parties are a bit played out. We're not naming names or anything, but we think some of them are getting a little bit lame and overhyped.

Here's our pick for the Labor Day weekend that's a bit off the W or Roosevelt radar: The last WET Party of the summer, held at the Custom Hotel.

The party features DJs Mark Farina, Jason Bentley, Franky Boissy, Todd Omotani, Eduardo Castillo and David Bullock. And dancing. And hot people. And the last sweetness of summer.

The party is happening on Saturday (August 30th) starting at 1:00 -- tickets are $30 and can be purchased here. Don't do anything we wouldn't do.

As we've told you before, the Sunset Marquis just completed an overhaul of their sexy hideaway villas in the Hollywood Hills and an addition of 40 new suites, so to celebrate, they are throwing a party tonight which will feature a performance by Stevie Wonder and guitarist Jeff Beck.

Everyone knows who Stevie Wonder is so he needs no explanation but as for Beck, he was a guitarist for the Yardbirds (Clapton's old band) and was ranked 14th on Rolling Stone Magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. He is also the man responsible for the Sunset Marquis' famous recording studio.

The party will also host a private viewing of "Gibson Through the Lens," a photo exhibition of over 70 rare and vintage images of iconic rock stars and their Gibson guitars like David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Prince.

As with most parties in Hollywood, this one is not open to the public. But we'll do our best to get you some party snapshots.
