From music festivals to Central Park frolicking to outdoor movie screenings, summer is one of the most exciting times to visit NYC. Of course, it's also when the city's at its muggiest, smelliest, and most hectic. Here are a few tips on ways to make the most of NYC in the summer by staying at a hotel:

1. Rooftops, rooftops, rooftops: Nothing beats having your own personal rooftop oasis in the middle of bustling Manhattan. Places like Hotel Americano (pictured) and The Peninsula will make those sweltering days seem a lot more manageable, and when the sun goes down, the party starts.

Keep an eye out for our yearly NYC hotel rooftop report, coming soon!

Four more tips after the jump!

InterContinental Le Grand Reminds Us That Paris Is Still A City of Culture

InterContinental Le Grand is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, so happy birthday to it! As with any major milestone, certain festivities have been planned to mark the occasion. But if you're expecting cake and streamers, think again.

This is Paris, after all, and when has Paris ever missed an opportunity to get all highbrow and cultured on everyone?

No. Rather than blowing its special anniversary on one fleeting night of drunken debauchery, the century-and-a-half-old hotel is dragging out its birthday by dedicating a month to each of the seven arts (architecture, music, literature, film...and those other three ones). Starting with this month's theme: literature.

Starwood Tempts Prospective SPG Members With Free Chocolate

March 9, 2012 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

As we explained last month, Starwood rolled out a bunch of new perks for its dedicated SPGers, and the changes took effect on March 1.

On the sidelines, if you've checked into a Starwood property over the past few weeks, you will have received a token of the brand's appreciation burning desire to make you, too, a member of the SPG ambassadors program. At Aloft, for example, all guests are receiving little purple foil-wrapped chocolate bars. Bearing the slogan, "Being an SPG member has never been sweeter," the yummy snack directs you to Starwood's website to learn more about the program.

Knowing how much of a weakness everyone (including us) has for chocolate, we're guessing they've been successful in, at the least, catching people's attention.

Hotel deLuxe In Portland Is Having A Bake Sale

March 2, 2012 at 9:44 AM | by | Comments (0)

And, just because we can't include an item about fitness without balancing it out with some yummy hotel dessert porn, here's a new promotion being launched by Provenance Hotels, which owns Hotel Lucia and Hotel deLuxe in Portland, Hotel Murano in Tacoma, and Hotel Preston in Nashville.

For every slice of chocolate cake sold through room service, fifty percent of the profits will go straight to Share Our Strength, a group that fights childhood hunger in the US. A pretty worthy cause, say we.

Though the whole combat-hunger-by-stuffing-your-face-with-chocolate-cake concept is a little questionable, we get what they're doing—and with a cake as appetizing as the one above (which will be served by The deLuxe starting today), we'd have a hard time saying no to "charity."

Where To Eat Pancakes in Hotels For National Pancake Day

February 28, 2012 at 12:45 PM | by | Comment (1)

Yup, today is National Pancake Day—always kinda sneaks up on ya, doesn't it?

In an effort to raise awareness for Children's Miracle hospitals, IHOP is offering a free short stack to every customer that walks into the restaurant today. Which is awesome. But, at the same time, it's IHOP, and we like to think our palates are slightly more refined.

Instead, consider a pancake breakfast at a hotel today. Not a guest? Not a problem. These hotel restaurants are all open and accessible to non-guests—trust us, the food is so good, they're worth the trip. And yes, we've managed to come up with more suggestions than just the pancake machines at Holiday Inn Express hotels. If we wanted to make our own, we'd just have stayed at home!

Valentine’s Day might have come and gone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still give your sweetheart some chocolates. Sorry, did we say some? We meant lots and lots (and lots) of chocolate—from the Peninsula Chicago’s diabetic-coma-inducing weekend gourmet Chocolate Bar, which we got to experience first-hand the last time we breezed through the Windy City.

Which Hotel Chef Is Making Jelly Doughnut Pancakes?

Few things excite us more than a delicious hotel breakfast. Sometimes, we wish we could just spend the whole day inside a swanky brasserie, gazing out the window, eating omelets and sipping tea. Chef Franklin Becker's new joint Lexington Brass, located inside Hyatt 48Lex, might be just the place for it.

The menu's winning item, no doubt, are the jelly doughnut pancakes, which borrow the concept of a baked, jelly-filled doughnut and impose it onto a regular old pancake. The result is thick, fluffy, jelly-filled and awesome. You might call it a dough-cake. Either way, it's served with berries and lemon cream, costs $17, and is the most delicious-sounding breakfast we've ever encountered.

Valentine's Day is still five months away, but Marriott is clearly in the mood for love. Yesterday, the company announced two new promotions—"More Love In The World" and "Cake From Buddy"—that not only let couples indulge in a little suite-snuggling, but also ply them with cake! Buddy "Cake Boss" Valastro will welcome guest couples to his New Jersey facilities to discuss their dream wedding cake; and then, he'll bake it for them.

Can't make it to Jersey? That's OK, Valastro is open to video conferencing too. The point is, Marriott seems to be really enjoying playing Cupid.

In order to choose from the 24 custom cake designs, all you have to do is book your wedding or another "qualifying event" at a Marriott in the tri-state area between now and February 29. What qualifies as an event on par with a wedding? Well, hopefully, dessert.
