An Atlanta Hotel Goes Down The Drain
October 31, 2008 at 2:40 PM | 1 Comment
In the past few years, Atlanta Georgia's Buckhead neighborhood has become the place for new luxury hotel projects, everyone from the Ritz-Carlton, St Regis, Sheraton, W, InterContinental, Westin, JW Marriott is either building a hotel or has a location there already.
The development which really put Buckhead on the map is called Streets of Buckhead, and has high-end shopping, restaurants and condos in addition to Starwood Capital's 1 Hotel & Baccarat Hotel, both of which were to include residences. Now it seems both of those hotels have been taken out of the development.

Hotel Pennsylvania Saved From Wrecking Ball, Revamps Its Website
July 31, 2008 at 9:34 AM | 0 Comments

In this era of transparency and instant information, it's no surprise that every business under the sun is trying to overhaul its digital image. Jumping on the bandwagon is the The Hotel Pennsylvania, which earned distinction last year as 2007 Hospitality Sales and Marketing Awards International (HSMAI) eMarketer of the Year. Also, as a Notable Hotel to Get Off of The Hotel DeathWatch List. (See The NY Observer.)
Their new website, hotelpenn.com, admittedly has all the usual bells and whistles -- neat graphics, plenty of information and links, an excellent monthly calendar (including all Madison Square Garden events, a gimme since the monster is just across the street over Penn Station). Oh and don't forget: music. What plays is "New York, New York," the instrumental version of course.
We like the history page, and the tidbit that their telephone number was celebrated in Glenn Miller's hit song, "Pennsylvania 6-5000" (the number is Manhattan's "longest continually used telephone number - impressive!)
Virtual overhaul aside, the literal hotel's overhaul can't come fast enough. A quick glance through a fraction of the more than 1500 reviews on Tripadvisor wildly sway, from "grim" and "filthy dump" to "pleasantly surprised" and "good value, great location." No groovy website can correct that until the work is finished.

Hooters Hotel and Casino Lives Another Day
June 10, 2008 at 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

The Hooters Hotel & Casino has been on deathwatch for quite sometime but it looks like it will live (just barely) for another day.
The owner of the Hooters hotel, 155 E. Tropicana, was in talks to sell the property to Hedwigs Las Vegas Top Tier. However, Hedwigs failed to make a payment by June 6 which automatically terminated the deal. Yet Hooters did get about $5.5 million from Hedwigs in a non-refundable deposit and extension fees.
Of course, Hooters is not out of the woods now. East Tropicana has serious cash flow issues and has not been able to meet its debt obligations. So Hooters is on the lookout once again for some sugar daddies who want to either keep the Hooters brand in place or redevelop it completely. Hooters is easy! Whatever you want to do with them, they are ok with it.
We say, somebody should call Jimmy Buffett.

Fancy Schmancy Texas Resort Files For Bankruptcy Protection
July 19, 2007 at 11:20 AM | 0 Comments

The Lajitas Resort in Lajitas, Texas has got some serious money problems. Hot shot developer Steve Smith bought the property in 2000 for $4.5 million and then went about turning it into a luxury resort complete with an "emerald-green" golf course, a gourmet restaurant and two bedroom suite room rates of $750 a night.
The place, now worth over $200 million, was tagged as "The Ultimate Hideout" where Richie Rich could fly in on his private jet or helicopter for a weekend of golf and relaxation. It also has a "mayor" on staff--a beer loving goat named Clay Henry.
Yet it seems not everyone wants to pay the high room rates or the $75,000 annual club membership fee as the resort has defaulted on a $12.2 million loan and has filed for bankruptcy protection.
