Guess The Hotel's Pretty 'Business Center'

July 20, 2009 at 11:31 AM | by juliana | 1 Comment

Yet another game of Guess The Hotel is here! Dedicated readers of HotelChatter know the drill but in case you're new, here's how it works. We put up a snapshot of a hotel somewhere in this great wide world and drop a few hints about the place. Then you put in your guesses in comments below. And away we go.

· This hotel has quite possibly the prettiest "business center" in the lobby. Actually it's not really a business center but rather two flat-screen computers for guests to use at one end of the also very pretty lobby. And the WiFi is free.
· A member of the "Laguna Beach" cast works the front desk and no, it's not Stephen Colletti.
· The hotel has great view of home plate at Petco Park.
· Mathematics geeks and nature lovers alike will appreciate the hotel's underlying design concept.

Hopefully, this wasn't too easy for you. But either way, start putting in your guesses and we'll unveil the hotel's identity later today.

A Worthwhile Hotel Business Center Does Exist in 2009

Earlier this month we found ourselves on King St. in Alexandria, Virginia and decided to stay the night at the Hotel Monaco Alexandria . Not only did this Hotel Monaco offer a great location and the usual Kimpton chic rooms but staffers also saw to it that our vehicle, which at the time had a U-Haul attached to it, was given premiere parking on the street right outside the hotel. Nice touch.

Want more? There was a community Wii where some guests were engaging in a digital boxing match, a tasty restaurant attached to the lobby, and an actually useful business center.

Hold up. A useful business center in 2009? No such thing right? That is what we thought, however, this small biz center had everything you might need. A web-connected Mac which was running both Windows and OSX and an ATM machine. Take a look at our video to see what we're talking about.

The Good Hotel Has iMacs in The Business Center

Yesterday we told you about the Good Hotel from JDV Hospitality which strives to give back to the local community by allowing guests to volunteer during their stay. The hotel also has a program in place that gives employees time during the day to volunteer for an organization of their choice.

Well, today we have another reason to love the Good Hotel--brand-new iMacs in the business center. Check 'em out. Technically, these "business stations" are part of the lobby but it's still cooler-looking than the business center of the 1990s. And just like internet access in the guestrooms, the use of these bad boys is free.

More on The Good Hotel after the jump.

In Africa, Depend on Hotel Business Centers for Internet

HotelChatter's newest contributing editor Scarlett Lion is filing her stories from Uganda. Every now and then, she'll be sending us dispatches about the hotel scene here and around Africa. Got questions? Send 'em to us and we'll get them answered. Enjoy.

This is actually a hotel business center in San Francisco.

The average internet café, dotted throughout any big city in Africa, will cost less than a dollar an hour. But, it might take about an hour to open your webmail. The average luxury hotel business center, however, will cost about $10 an hour. It will provide the user a connection speed that reminds him or her of the days of AOL and that grinding modem sound, now oh-so-obsolete.

This will be the fastest internet you can find in Africa. And no, it's not fast enough to watch YouTube.

Joe Sharkey Last Man Standing in Hotel Business Centers

In his recent column, Joe Sharkey griped about the outrageous fees the Grand Hyatt Washington DC business center which amounted to $43.55 for 22 minutes of internet use and 10 pages of printouts.

While we agree these are ridiculous fees that Hyatt is charging at its business centers, we can't help but wonder why Sharkey, a reporter who writes about business travel, is still using a business center?

Doesn't the Times pay for him to have a laptop so that he can get wireless access? Since most Hyatt hotels partner with T-Mobile Hotspots, all Sharkey has to do is pay $9.95 for a 24-hour period. Maybe he likes to keep it old school but either way, it doesn't keep him on top of the business travel beat.

Regardless, his column goes on to profile some of the very legit gripes hotel guests have with hotels today such as not allowing hangers to be removed from the closets, luxury hotels that charge for bottled water, harsh bathroom lighting, difficult alarm clocks, monster pillows and valet parking.

Still, Sharkey contends his biggest peeve is that higher end hotels charge higher fees for internet use while mid-level hotels offer it for free.

Sharkey, if only you read about our WiFi report back in March, we could have saved you the $43.55. Oh, that's right. You don't get WiFi.
