Holiday Hotel Spa-aahhh Treatments

December 13, 2013 at 12:06 PM | by | Comments (0)

Omni Bedford Springs

While hotel holiday decorations are pretty to look at, they don't do much to relax you during the holiday season, which let's be honest--can be crazy stressful with all the parties, the shopping, the relatives. So if you need a breather, we’ve put together a list (and we’re checking it twice) of hotel spas across the US who have put together some holiday-themed treatments that you can give to yourself because, contrary to popular belief, sometimes it is better to receive than to give.

California
The Spa at Rancho Bernardo Inn, San Diego normally uses seasonal ingredients and this winter is no exception. From December through January you can indulge in the Chocolate Candied Orange Treatment, and indulge you will! This treatment starts with a hazelnut and orange scrub; then comes a chocolate comfrey wrap and cinnamon scalp treatment; an Acai butter massage follows, as does a mulled cider drink. The spa then sends you on your way with a take home recipe for hazelnut and sea salt shortbread cookies. The cost for this extravagance is $175.

At Lake Arrowhead Resort’s Spa of the Pines (an Autograph Collection hotel) there is a new holiday-themed menu of treatments. The resort is offering a hot stone Holiday Pedicure, a Holiday Swedish Massage using their own special holiday-scented oil (cloves and cinnamon), and a Holiday-Scented Body Scrub using an organic vanilla and brown sugar scrub followed by a rich body cream. For the most bang for your buck go for the Holiday Duo: the body scrub followed by the massage for $165.

Arizona

L'Auberge de Sedona is offering guests a Warming Gingerbread Sugar Body Scrub and Gingerbread Wrap that are good enough to eat. Using organic sugar and warming ginger oil there are also notes of cinnamon and orange. To tempt you further, we’ll just tell you that after the scrub, the body butter is applied to your skin, you’re wrapped in warm blankets and receive either a scalp and neck massage or a foot massage. You can just lie back and hear the heavenly choir. The scrub and wrap are $145 for both treatments.

December 12, 2013 at 5:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

Last week, Brown’s Hotel in London unveiled this Christmas tree, created in partnership with legendary British accessories fashion designer, Lulu Guinness. As you'd expect it's a very stylish festive ensemble. Atop the tree you'll find no run-of-mill angel but Guinness' trademark ruby-red pouting lips. The hotel is certainly in the Christmas spirit, offering guests who stay during December the chance to win a two-night stay at the hotel and £250 to spend on a Lulu Guinness handbag.

Throughout the holiday period, The Spa at Brown’s Hotel will also be offering a MERRY BERRY manicure and pedicure using Claté products and festive ingredients such as orange, clove, juniper berry and cinnamon. The treatments are available now through February 1, 2014.

Cozy Up On The Berkeley’s Rooftop With Hot Cocoa and a Flick

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

Let’s face it: At the beginning of the Christmas season, we have warm, fuzzy thoughts of snuggling in front of the fire with a hot toddy in hand and "A Charlie Brown Christmas" on the telly. Next thing you know, we’re fighting with crowds in malls, dragging the Christmas tree through the damn door, and making grocery lists for the three full days it’ll take to make all those holiday family feasts. Where did that warm, all-over glow go?

The Berkeley Hotel in London’s Knightsbridge is doing all they can to bring that fleeting festive feeling back with their rooftop Winter Cinema.

Known as a happening rooftop terrace overlooking Hyde Park in the summer, the hotel’s Health Club & Spa has transformed the space into a pine-filled forest with twinkly lights, rustic-chic wooden chalets built for two and a cinema screen more than large enough to accommodate Jimmy Stewart’s face.

Who Should You Tip at Hotels This Holiday Season?

December 11, 2013 at 3:10 PM | by | Comments (0)

When staying at a hotel, it's common to tip the folks who work there for various services, such as the housekeepers, the bellhops and the concierges. But a credit card education website is now saying (randomly) not to forget the front desk workers this holiday season.

CreditDonkey.com has compiled a list of all the other people in your life that you need to leave a tip for including hotel, motel and resort desk clerks. CreditDonkey claims these employees make an annual wage of $21,960 in their gig and deserve a tip between $5 and $10 before you check-out, especially if you they've helped you out other than just checking you in and handing you a room key.

We have to agree with this sort of tip, not just for the holidays, but always (again, if they go above and beyond their duties.) So now, who else should we tip at hotels over the holidays? And we're talking about a few days at a hotel over Christmas, not just a one-night stand sometime the week before. Let us know who should go on the NICE list in comments below!

Of course, tipping the housekeepers, the bellhops, the concierges and the front desk can add up (not to mention the pressure to tip is high these days. Read the comments on this story for some advice). Perhaps consider some other gifts aside from cash that will be sure to delight. Otherwise, make sure you've got your dollar bills and fivers in place before checking out.

It's Now Snowing at The Hyatt Regency San Francisco

December 10, 2013 at 4:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

We knew it was snowing on the East Coast but in San Francisco? What's that about?

Well, once again, The Hyatt Regency San Francisco has transformed its lobby, one of the largest in the world, into a virtual, over-sized “snow globe” with 30,000 lights that cascade down the hotel's 17-story atrium, a 30-foot Christmas tree and best of all, daily snowfall.

The snow falls daily at different times throughout the day (see below) which is sure to delight the children (and adults) of the world who don't usually see snow. For the snow-weary folks, don't worry, the snow will only "fall" until December 30th.

December 10, 2013 at 9:39 AM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

Hotels love building gingerbread houses for Christmastime but the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix has gone above and beyond with their first life-size, walk-through Gingerbread Village.

The mini-molasses city include 13 four-feet by six-feet gingerbread houses and a clock tower in Santa's village. The whole thing takes up 1,500-sq.ft. of space and required 4,000 POUNDS of gingerbread cookie dough, 3,240 gingerbread bricks to shingle roofs for the houses, 2,000 POUNDS of icing, 750 POUNDS of sugar and an astounding 25,000 eggs. Good lord, we nearly fainted just reading this. God bless the souls who had to roll out that cookie dough. You can see some of the behind-the-scenes photos here on the hotel's Facebook page.

But it's not just this JW Marriott thats going all out for the holidays. All JW Marriotts are offering a special Holiday Getaway offer that start at $139 a night and include a $50 nightly resort credit as well as access to all of the hotel's holiday festivities. Use code P91 at marriott.com when booking by December 15th.

See below for the list of participating JW Marriott Resorts and terms and conditions of the deal

This is What 4 Million Hotel Christmas Lights Looks Like

December 6, 2013 at 4:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

If you were near the The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa in Riverside, Calif. (an hour east of LA) on the day after Thanksgiving, then you probably noticed things were a little "brighter" in the area.

That's because the hotel switched on approximately four million Christmas lights that illuminate the hotel as part of their annual Festival of Lights celebration.

The light show draws in about 300,000 visitors and includes over 400 animated characters in addition to the four million lights. It takes 10 weeks of round-the-clock preparations by a crew of 30 to get it all ready. And it's been happening for 21 years now. We can't help but be curious about where they store these lights when Christmas is over. But it's probably way neater than our tangled stash in the garage.

A Daredevil Santa Will Land at the Six Senses Zighy Bay on Christmas

December 5, 2013 at 5:10 PM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

Just because you're in the middle of Zighy Bay in Oman, doesn't mean you can't see Santa. All you have to do is head to the Six Senses Zighy Bay Resort where Santa will make an appearance on Christmas Day, not by sleigh, but by paramotor over the Hajar Mountains from Dibba. Once he lands on the beach at the resort, where his Santarina is waiting for him, he will dole out small gifts and pose for photos. After Santa makes his rounds, he and Santarina will head over to the neighboring Smuggler's Bay...by inner tube of course.

Aside from this daredevil Santa appearance, the hotel is also offering additional holiday-themed activities this month including a "maintaining balance" workshop, holiday spa specials, a Christmas Eve cocktail reception and Omani Christmas Eve celebration. Go here for more info or to book. Rates start at $1,800 a night. We hope Santa is bringing you some extra cash!

Peninsula Hotels Have Hired a 'SnowPage' for the Holiday Season

December 4, 2013 at 5:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

The world is officially in "Countdown to Christmas" mode and now, so are we. Every day until Christmas we'll be featuring a hotel that's in a holiday mood--whether it be with gigantic gingerbread houses, over-the-top Christmas decorations, thrilling lighting displays and best of all, Santa appearances. But of course, any hotel can assemble a fake tree, put on some lights and declare themselves "festive." Which is why we're looking at hotels that are really going ALL OUT. Know of a hotel that's super excited for Christmas? Let us know!

All Peninsula Hotels across the world get incredibly festive with their holiday decorations. But this year, the luxury hotel brand has gone a step further--by creating a special holiday mascot, The SnowPage with its own holiday season microsite too.

Peninsula filmed a video showing off the holiday preparations at the Peninsula New York and while it looks like some staffers are just having fun in the snow on the rooftop, they are actually building a SnowPage complete with the pageboy bellcap and a P on his red scarf.

Peninsula then invites you to build your own virtual SnowPage and send it off as an e-greeting, using certain desserts and accessories from Peninsula Hotels to decorate. For example, for the eyes, you can select green tea macaroons from the Peninsula Tokyo or handmade chocolate truffles from the Peninsula Hong Kong. (Too bad your SnowPage creation isn't really real!)
