Hilton New York Honored With a 'Green Street' Award. Really.

Swarming with smog, exhaust, and buzzing with the din of taxis in neutral, New York's Avenue of the Americas is hardly a location we think of as being environmentally-considerate. A work in progress, maybe, with a little cheerleading needed to nudge it in the right direction.
The "Green Street" Award was established by the Avenue of the Americas Association to inspire the thoroughfare's tenants to think eco and find new ways to close the loop. This year, the Hilton New York was honored, and not just because it hosted the ceremony in its Trianon Ballroom last week.
Innovative eco-hotels are normally found bourgeois bohemian neighborhoods like the West Village or SoHo, so when we caught wind of this news we were looking for certifiable proof of the Hilton's investment in going green. According to the Avenue's Association, proof came in the form of a futuristic, energy-saving PureCell system that uses electric power to power the hotel and heat water, which has accounted for 6% of the hotel's consumption since being installed. It is also three times more energy efficient than a normal electric grid and operates 24-hours per day.

Get a $50 Hilton Caribbean Hotel Credit Just For Becoming a Facebook Fan

If you're obsessed with finding new places for hotel deals (and let's face it, aren't we all?) then consider joining Facebook and Twitter to follow hotels for special deals. Like this one we just learned about from Hilton Hotels in the Caribbean.
Simply become a fan of a Hilton Caribbean hotel and download a $50 resort credit which is then redeemable at check-in. You can find a list of the hotels here. The hotels include Hilton Barbados, Caribe Hilton, Hilton Curacao, Hilton Kingston Jamaica and the British Colonial Hilton Nassau.
Unfortunately, you just missed your chance to catch the Jonas Brothers who were recently shacked up at the Hilton Santo Domingo which was swarmed by rabid teenage girls. Might be best to give that hotel some time to recover.
After becoming a fan, go to the hotel's BOXES tab. There you will see the resort credit which you can print out. Just remember you must book a minimum 2-night stay and only one coupon per room can be used. The offer is good through January 2010 and cannot be combined with other promotions or offers.

What’s On The Block at The Beverly Hilton?

We continue our What's On The Block: Los Angeles Edition with The Beverly Hilton. This is a view from the hotel looking out on Century City.
Thanks to its prominence as the premier Hollywood awards show venue, not to mention its central location and luxury service, the Beverly Hilton sees its fair share of celebrity guests, but today, we thought we’d take you normal people on a little tour of What’s On The Block to let you see what all us plebes have to enjoy during a stay here.
First, let’s start with the iconic bar, Trader Vic’s, the tiki lounge that has specialized in mai tais and broken dreams for decades, and which has been experiencing a recent renaissance thanks to a revival of South Seas-chic (see Luau below) that has been taking Los Angeles by storm. Wander in for a rum cocktail then…well, let’s be honest, that will probably be the end of you.

Why We Won't Be Staying at the Hilton Fayrouz in Sharm El Sheikh

Let us preface this post by saying that we are not hotel snobs. We can take just as much pleasure in spending the night in a bamboo shack on the beach (more of that tomorrow) as we do checking out the latest fancypants hotel (although we’ll make sure we’re wearing full-cover, Damian Barr-style PJs in the shack – just to make sure of those sheets).
However, if a hotel is trading under a brand like, oh, say, Hilton, we do expect it to be a certain standard. And that standard is a little higher than a lobby that makes us want to run straight back to the airport:

Chavez Not Happy With Hilton; Installs Himself At Front Desk

We’re familiar with the feeling of loving a hotel so much we’d like to move in and make it our home. And when we’re unhappy with a room or the service at a hotel we might make a complaint, leave, and remember not to return unless the situation improved. But that’s us. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has a different strategy. If he doesn’t like the hotel, he has his government take it over. (Now, why didn’t we think of that?)
Earlier this week, Chavez used a presidential decree to acquire the Hilton hotel on Margarita Island. Was he unhappy with the presidential suite? Not keen on the room service? No, as this report puts it, Chavez was unhappy with Hilton for being “cheeky.”

Hiltons in Paris Celebrate Renoir

Can anyone still afford to jaunt to Paris to check out new art exhibits? Er, could anyone ever afford to do that? (Actually, scratch that question. We’re pretty sure we won’t like the answer.)
If you answered “yes” to the first question, the Hilton Hotels in Paris have an art-tastic hotel package for you. To coincide with the new “Renoir in the 20th Century” exhibit at Paris’s National Gallery at Grand Palais, the two Paris Hiltons have unveiled the “Renoir Celebration” package through Dec. 31.
The package includes accommodation at either Hilton Arc de Triomphe or Hilton La Défense, two VIP passes for the Renoir exhibit, a Renoir 2010 calendar, and a glass of champagne at the hotel bar upon arrival. To which we say: Um, hello recession? If we wanted a Renoir calendar, we’d probably just go to the calendar store at the mall. Or, you know, buy one at the museum shop. As a package perk, it’s a little on the pathetic side, don’t you think? The champagne is a nice touch, but since the press release didn’t specify a kind we’re guessing it’s not particularly top-notch.
Sigh. It’s a sad day when even a sophisticated Paris excursion feels cheap. Rates start at 334 euros (roughly 488 USD) at Hilton Arc de Triomphe and 214 euros (roughly 312 USD) at Hilton Paris la Défense.

Hilton's Denizen Employees Could Face Criminal Charges

The Wall Street Journal reported this morning that Hilton Hotels and its executives accused of stealing proprietary W Hotel information to create their now dead-in-the-water hotel brand Denizen Hotels, could face criminal charges.
The grand jury is part of a six-month-old Justice Department probe into allegations that Hilton, which is owned by private-equity firm Blackstone Group, used trade secrets taken by former Starwood executives, who defected to Hilton last year, to develop its own luxury brand to compete with Starwood's successful W chain.
About 30 Hilton employees and executives have either been fired or placed on leave. Ross Klein, the former president of Starwood Hotels who defected to Hilton and was in charge of the Denizen development, was initially place on paid leave with Hilton. However, he was recently replaced by John Vanderslice as Hotels magazine reported last month.
But there is a chance that even if Hilton as a corporation is not criminally charged, the individual employees could be prosecuted themselves.

Showing Up in Your Halloween Costume Could Get You a Free Hotel Stay

Who says you're too old to dress up and go trick or treating this Halloween? Of course, we aren't talking about putting on a Care Bears costume and using your Care Bears pillowcase as a candy bucket as you skip from house to house. No, there's a much more adult to way to trick or treat this year at the Hilton San Francisco Financial District.
Over Halloween weekend, guests can choose from "treats" such as Hilton HHonors points, food and beverage coupons, museum tickets and Halloween candy. But if you arrive in costume you will be entered in the hotel's costume contest where the winner will get one free night on the hotel's 13th floor. Awesome! Wait, is it? Most hotels don't have a 13th floor. Nevermind, the Hilton promises to give you a free stay on an actual floor that exists.
Just checking in for the weekend? Room rates start at $169 a night. But beware of the black cat crossing your path. That's Clarence, the hotel's supposedly good-natured house cat.

New York's Tudor Hotel Will Get A Hip New Lobby

When we reported that the historic Tudor Hotel was set to become a Hilton in March 2010, one commenter was not pleased. The concern? That a piece of hotel history would be ravaged by a cookie-cutter chain. Often, this is what happens when old gems are “updated,” but renovations on historic buildings can also be kind of awesome. We don’t know which it will be for the Tudor yet, but we do know who will be responsible for part of the spruce-up: Therese Virserius Design.

Business Travelers, Take Note: Hilton Mexico City Reforma Coming Soon

Chalk this hotel opening up to some of the notable ch-ch-ch-changes of hotel goliath Hilton Worldwide (née Hilton Hotels). Following news of the company's logo and name change, and overall brand rebirth, comes what they are dubbing a "historic" announced opening in Mexico City.
The Hilton Mexico City Reforma—currently a Sheraton—is scheduled to open at the end of 2009 after a series of upgrades, making it the first full-service Hilton hotel in the city. Is it a happy coincidence that it happens to be located on the aptly named Reforma Avenue?
The announcement touts the future Hilton as being ideal for business and pleasure-seeking travelers, but their description is especially suit-and-tie formal: Hilton looks forward to building its "portfolio of brands throughout Mexico and Latin America;" it will strengthen their "presence in one of the most important markets with one of the most impressive products in Mexico City." Can we get a hedge fund with room service?

Hilton Hotels Get a New Logo, New Website and New Name

There's been a lot happening with the bigger hotel chains recently. Westin unveiled a new website. Renaissance by Marriott unveiled pretty much a new life and now Hilton Hotels has unveiled a new logo, a new website, a new headquarters (in Maryland) and even, a new name. But much like the change we saw at the Hilton San Francisco this morning, it's nothing game-changing.
The new Hilton name is now Hilton Worldwide. Previously, the brand went by Hilton Hotels Corp. which was probably just to corporatey and distant for a hospitality company. Hilton Worldwide is simple and gets the message across that Hilton Hotels are indeed located worldwide. Moving on.

The Hilton San Francisco Changes Its Name...Sorta

The official transition to fall has brought other changes as well, though the one we're about to mention is hardly as noticeable as leaves turning autumnal colors. It was recently announced that, effective immediately, the Hilton San Francisco has changed its name to—drumroll, please—The Hilton San Francisco Union Square. Shocking, we know.
The name change was brought about for one glaring geographic reason: The hotel is located just two blocks away from Union Square, San Francisco's pulsing city center, known for shopping, dining, and close proximity to major cable car stops and other popular tourist neighborhoods like Chinatown and North Beach. Hilton cites a want to "raise awareness among visitors" by adding "Union Square" to its tail end, hopefully filling a few more rooms in the process.
