Is This The Prettiest Hamptons Hotel Bathroom, Ever?

Over the weekend, a family wedding drove us out to the Hamptons, where we booked a room at the quaint 1708 House, a 15-year-old bed and breakfast whose building dates back to—you guessed it—1708. Joe Biden, Kristin Davis (that's Charlotte from Sex and the City), and even Bill Marriott have all stayed here as guests.
Some of the B&B's main selling points include a small patio that connects the different wings of the house (perfect for afternoon tea, which is served complimentary every day, buffet-style), a charming dining room with the original wooden ceiling beams, and a hammock in the backyard.
But it's what we discovered in Room A that made us even happier: a gigantic bathroom with marble finishes, a wide jacuzzi tub with separate shower stall, Molton Brown toiletries, and the largest vanity we've seen in a hotel since moving to New York.

We Know Where Pippa Middleton Spent Labor Day Weekend

Want to know what it's like spending Labor Day weekend over on Andre Balazs' $345/night waterfront Hamptons retreat, Sunset Beach Hotel? Just ask UK tabloid darling Pippa Middleton, who spent Saturday night there, dining at the hotel restaurant and playing ping pong with Balazs himself.
The Duchess of Cambridge's younger sister reportedly flew into Shelter Island via seaplane from Manhattan, where she tried playing it low-key but was immediately recognized, according to Us Weekly.

Summer at The Hamptons' 'Millionaire's Row' for a Song
Some of us at HotelChatter appreciate the summer months. We think 90-degree heat in July is appropriate and that’s why beach houses were created. So, when we received news about actual availability in Long Island’s busy Hamptons region, we were intrigued. How could this be? Usually you'd have to have booked months in advance to get decent digs at this time of year.
We know some folks are itching to escape city-life at some point this summer, but think it might be too late to grab a beachy-keen place. Well, in some high falutin’ Hamptons sections you might be SOL, but in the low-key Montauk area? You’re in luck!
Millionaire’s Row, just 15 miles away from East Hampton, is comprised of eight cottages from studios to two-bedroom units in Fort Pond Bay, fronting Block Island Sound in Long Island’s East End. The cozy quarters are run by a local resident who wanted to make the area a bit more affordable for those seeking a quiet vacation filled with fishing, beach bumming, and sunset soaking. But, if you do want all that “Hamptons Hype”, you can get to the parties via a quick cab ride, no problem.

Tom Colicchio Looking for Top Staff for His New Hamptons Inn

Fans of the Top Chef judge will be excited to know that after the wild success of Craft and 'wichcraft (among others, of course), Tom Colicchio has decided to open his first hotel on Long Island, New York.
It won't be some flashy chain, or have any kind of gimmicky concept—at least not for now. The hotel is in fact an old, quiet 22-room inn in Bridgehampton called Topping Rose House (love the name!), and at the adjoining restaurant, Colicchio plans to use produce grown on the property in the dishes. Giving farmer-wannabe Andre Balazs a run for his locally-sourced money...

Finding A Cheap, One-Night Summer Stay In The Hamptons Isn't The Easiest Thing To Do
Long Island is a big place. It's a place Manhattanites love to trash talk in the winter but can't wait to visit come summer. It's an endless stretch of land that sprouts from Queens, and its tip runs all the way out to eastern Connecticut. None of which should necessarily imply that finding a decent, cheap hotel there during the summer would be difficult. Except, it is.
For starters, most places require a two- or three-night minimum for any stay from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, making a one-night getaway that much more difficult.
Plus, for whatever reason, most of the major hotel brands have completely overlooked Long Island as a viable place to establish a hotel. Add to that the fact that New Yorkers are planning freaks, so most have already booked their Hamptons hotel months (if not years) in advance, rendering the few decent hotels all sold out.
So, we ask, with good reason: where to turn?

Is That A Pool We Spy Going Up At La Maison Blanche?

Why, yes, it is! La Maison Blanche, that sleepy 8-room inn with big-buck Hamptons star power (remember that pé tanque court last summer? yeah, that was them), is in the midst of installing a new pool in the backyard. The hotel in fact re-opened today for the start of the winter season (with rates as low as $170), and are planning to have the pool finished "well before the season begins."
Well, this is New York, so as long as there's a bit of sun and some 60-degree weather, the short shorts will be coming out.
But the pool's not all. To really make guests feel special, co-owner Alistair MacLean will also be introducing exclusive pool membership cards that will function more like a souvenir than anything else, but will look nice next to the Trump card you obviously carry around at all times in your wallet. Read on to find out what luxuries await in the Hamptons this summer—and whether or not you qualify...

The New Boutique Hotel Kid on the Block: King and Grove

If you love The Surf Lodge in Montauk, then you've probably already spent a night at its new sister hotel nearby, Ruschmeyer's, a three-acre summer camp-inspired hotel featuring clean and crisp guestrooms, an open-air beer garden, a sand-filled pool, a restaurant from the Orchard Street chefs and a boogie-down bar called the Electric Eel. Oh and staffers decked out in J. Crew shirts, Madewell dresses and Toms shoes.
But what you may not know is that both the Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer's are part of a new boutique hotel company with serious roots in Morgans Hotel Group called King and Grove Hotels.

The Capri Southampton Gives a Little Peep Show of Its Rooms

Finally! The newest hotel in the Hamptons, The Capri Southampton, which opened over Memorial Day Weekend, has posted photos of their guestrooms. For now, you can see a room shot on the hotel's Facebook page but we hear the full gallery will up on the hotel website by tomorrow.
Our first thought on the rooms? It looks like The Hudson goes to the Hamptons with the white furniture and bed and the curtains along the wall (covering the bathroom we presume.) But we're loving the nautical touches such as the lamps that hang from nautical rope as well as the brightly colored accents and artwork like the special design print from Cynthia Rowley Design Studio that hangs above the bed. (Rowley also has a shop inside the hotel.)
The club king room (pictured above) also feature bed linens from Sferra, bath toiletries from Red Flower, iPod docks, free WiFi and complimentary beverages from Panna, Perrier, & San Pellegrino. Because this is the Hamptons and three different kinds of water is to be expected.

Still No Website, But Weekday Specials At the Capri Southampton

Our curiosity was piqued last month about the new Capri Southampton property, whose "bathing club" and Nobu restaurant had us booking tickets on the next Hampton Jitney out of Manhattan! The New York Times also included it in their annual Hamptons preview. As of now, the meager website continues to offer nothing more than a pretty press image (no rooms, no pool, no nothing!), but we spoke to manager James Woods about the hotel's first week of business—for a "slow opening," the picture he painted wasn't that bad at all!
"This was supposed to be a slow weekend, but we ended up doing 485 covers, which is about 250 reservations. We had celebrities coming out, people were really packing in, and we had to call in extra staff to accommodate everyone."
Though weekend rates remain at $495, Woods clued us into a new weekday special of $250 (Sunday through Thursday) which might make your Hamptons poolside getaway dream that much more of a reality. And if lowered room rates weren't enough, how about a Nobu-catered bar menu while you lounge at a Miami-inspired pool area?

Take a Look at Andre Balazs' New StndAIR Seaplane

If you receive the Standard Culture newsletter (as we do—hello, hotel geeks!), then yesterday you will have learned about Michael Castillejos, the Texas native bellman who has a special gift for riding bellman carts down Washington Street.
But that's not the only buzz around the Standard these days—it turns out master hotelier Andre Balazs has been quietly planning the launch of StndAir, a seaplane service that shuttles passengers to and from standard (ha) getaway destinations like the Hamptons, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Hudson Valley.
Want to take a ride? The seaplane—which, by the way, seems to be making quite the comeback—can charter a flight to anywhere within a 300 mile radius of New York City, and is intended to be an extension of the Standard experience.
If that doesn't mean anything to you, here are some clues: Andre Balazs Sunset Beach Rosé, StndAir-branded water, and, um, Swedish Fish will all be offered during the flights. (If you ask us, other airlines would be wise to latch onto the whole free-candy-and-wine idea too—pure marketing genius.)

One Perk of Staying at La Maison Blanche in the Hamptons? A Seaplane!

Which of the following sounds more appealing: hours by car on the Long Island Expressway, followed by a $12 ferry ride from North Haven to Shelter Island? Or, as convenience would have it, a chartered seaplane that flies you directly from NYC's Chelsea to Crescent Beach? Sound Aircraft, a Long Island-based airplane and helicopter service company, is currently hoping you choose the latter.
What's that, you're afraid to part with so much money?Come on, it's a seaplane! Didn't you ever watch Raiders Of the Lost Ark?

Who's Up For a Game of Pétanque At The 'White House?'

Next month, a new hotel pops up on Shelter Island, the sleepy eastern Long Island town which, in addition to Andre Balazs' less-publicized resort, Sunset Beach, also happens to be the home of actress Julie Kavner, aka the voice of Marge Simpson. La Maison Blanche, which is French for—you guessed it—'the white house,' is an unpretentious eight-room structure that sits right next to Crescent Beach.
New Yorkers who are considering a weekend getaway might want to look into La Maison Blanche, which offers an on-site bakery, complimentary bicycles, use of the hotel's iPad, and, just to round things off, a Pétanque court. Pétanque, which resembles bocce ball, has become a unique part of Shelter Island's identity since Veuve Clicquot began hosting their annual Pétanque Tournament right on Sunset Beach. It seems guests at La Maison Blanche will now be able to work on their form before the big day, which usually falls around Bastille Day.
