Take A Bite Out Of the New Hyatt Union Square

It's Guess The Hotel revealed!

Better late than never, as they say. And we will go ahead and say it about the Hyatt Union Square, which (finally) made its big debut last week in lower Manhattan—about, oh, twenty months behind schedule.

But that's okay, because after taking a quick look inside, we're happy to report that locals (and guests) seem to have already taken kindly to the new hotel. Just days after opening, the lobby scene was abuzz with guests spread out on the white sofas, bartenders pouring drinks, and the healthy 'ding' of elevator doors sliding open.

Though it's not open yet, we could spy the hotel's South American-inspired restaurant, which officially opens May 15, and which will feature a dramatic wooden art installation, made of discarded bed frames, hanging from the ceiling (the sculpture is visible from the lobby).

And speaking of weird art hanging from the ceiling, in case you haven't already guessed, the mystery hotel we showed you yesterday with the strange turd-looking objects hanging over the bar is in fact the Hyatt Union Square.

Read on to see another photo from the lobby!

Guess The Hotel Bar With The Hanging Turds

April 29, 2013 at 9:17 AM | by | Comments (0)

Occasionally, we come across some questionable hotel art that makes us wonder if the idea is actually to ward off guests rather than lure them in. That's how we felt after spotting this "dangling turd" feature inside a new hotel lobby bar. We stuck around just long enough to take this photo, and luckily managed to get out without one of them dropping on our head.

But rather than just come out and say it, we thought it would be more fun for you to Guess The Hotel!

You know the drill: take a close look at the photo, read our hints (below), and see if anything rings a bell. Then, when you think you've figured out the hotel, jot down your answer in the comments below. (And sorry, no life lines.)

Your hints are as follows..

· This is a brand new hotel, located in a major city, and it only started taking reservations this month.

· Prior to its opening, we had previously examined some quirky design features in the guest rooms.

· Though this hotel is run by a major chain, the feel is more boutique-y.

· The bar (where this photo was taken) shares the lobby floor with a South American-influenced restaurant. One could also go so far as to say this is a place where people unite.

Guess the Hotel With 58 Built-In Checkers Boards

April 15, 2013 at 1:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

We thought we'd start off the week with a round of Guess the Hotel—something fun and light-hearted to ease you back into the exciting world of hotel shenanigans after your peaceful, relaxing weekend.

Recently, we found ourselves inside the suite of a hotel whose name is inspired by Mother Nature. Inside that suite, one of the first things that caught our eye was this fantastic novelty furniture piece: a coffee table with a flippable surface that allows it to switch between a checkers board, a backgammon board, or just a plain old red table. Being master checkers champions since the wee age of 5, we decided to leave the table just the way we found it.

Now! It's time for you to guess the hotel. Here are your hints, including the ones we've already generously provided:

· The geography of the area surrounding this hotel (located in the US) has a lot to do with its name.

· This hotel is made up of 70 suites and rooms—58 of which all contain the red-painted checkers board table.

· When you're not playing checkers in your room, you're likely to be sitting out by the pool, flipping through e-magazines and news sites on the free iPads that are loaned out to guests.

· Next to the gorgeous tree-lined inner courtyard (which was recently renovated, and contains an outdoor swimming pool) is the hotel's fine dining restaurant, run by a chef with not one but two Michelin stars under his belt.

· If having an ocean view from your room or suite isn't your idea of fun, then this hotel is probably not for you.

Submit your answers here, and be sure to check back later in the week for the big reveal!

Guess the Hotel Revealed: Ridge Luxury Villas, Los Cabos

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: Avenida Playa Grande , Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, 23450
February 4, 2013 at 12:02 PM | by | Comments (0)

Well, we'll assume we stumped you with last week's edition of Guess the Hotel. None of you could guess! We gave you some killer clues and a damn-good picture of one hungry hot tub, but now we'll help you out: That oasis belongs to the Ridge Luxury Villas at Playa Grande in Cabo San Lucas.

The rooftop pool club is only available to guests of The Ridge, which offers one, two, or three bedroom villas with full kitchens and living rooms. There's also a restaurant and infinity pool overlooking the property/ocean (along with another hungry hot tub, see photo).

We know that downtown Cabo San Lucas screams puke and rally, but you really can have a luxurious experience outside of the hotel corridor - we swear.

Oh, the two bodies of water that converge are the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean. The famous rock structure is the arch of Los Cabos, and The Ridge is one of five Solmar properties grouped on the southwest side of the harbor. Rates start at $308 a night.

Guess the Hotel With The Hungry Hot Tub

January 30, 2013 at 11:54 AM | by | Comments (0)

Happy Hump Day! You're halfway there, so let's take a work break and play a little Guess The Hotel! Any idea where this rooftop oasis is located? The view/hot tub combo looks like it's a one-way ticket to tranquility... or perhaps the center of the earth! That thing looks hungry.

You know the deal -- here are your clues:

- It overlooks a city that sports an infamous rock formation

- Two large bodies of water combine at the location of this city

- Four other properties under the same parent brand surround this one (they're all right next to each other)

- Even though they're all connected, this property is the only one whose guests have access to this rooftop pool club

Do you know which hotel we’re talking about? Put your answers in comments below!

Guess The Hotel Revealed: Grupo Habita’s Endémico in Ensenada

January 28, 2013 at 12:34 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, we relied on the deck chairs at this emerald green pool to get us out of a little bout of winter blues. But where are they? No, it’s not an Aman Resort, although we can see that comparison - both SFHotelGuy and nickdla guessed it right: we were hinting at Hotel Endémico in Ensenada, Mexico.

Part of Grupo Habita (which includes the likes of Hotel Americano in New York and Condesa DF in Mexico City), Endémico has just 20 luxury cabins, scattered on a hillside overlooking the wine region of the Baja Peninsula.

Guess The Hotel With The Emerald Green Pool

January 23, 2013 at 5:38 PM | by | Comments (3)

It’s near January's end and frankly, today of all days winter is getting us down. We have never seen so many weather-related Tweets out there. Yes, we know. Baby, it's cold outside.

So, for a little mid-week escape (and as part of our week-long Fantasy dreaming), we’re calling upon this delicious deck chair to make us feel better. But where are we? Time for you to Guess The Hotel!

- This hotel has a very small number of rooms, if you can even call them rooms at all

- Each room has its own outdoor terrace with kiva and the same uninterrupted views

- The small group to which the hotel belongs has a number of high-design properties in the Americas

- The area is known for its wine, and not far from a rather infamous party destination

Know which hotel we have in mind? Tell us in the comments!

Guess The Hotel Revealed: Hamilton Island Reef View Hotel

December 10, 2012 at 12:48 PM | by | Comments (0)

Last week, we showed you a lush, tropical view, and called upon your internal GPS skills to tell us where you thought it might be. We admit, it may have been a little more difficult than previous rounds of Guess the Hotel, to decipher the mystery paradise island. We gave some clues and now it's time for the big reveal.

Drum roll please...

The tropical location is Australia's very own Hamilton Island, where we recently spent a few days enjoying the laid back rhythm of island life.

One of the best things about this place is that the entire island is run by a corporation, and it's one a few resort islands that make up the Whitsundays, located on the Southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Its location makes it a perfect location for water sports, cocktailing by the pool and just general relaxation.

Guess The Hawt Island Hotel Where One Card Gets All!

December 4, 2012 at 12:29 PM | by | Comments (0)

Let's see how good you are with pin-pointing a hotel's location with another installment of Guess The Hotel!

This place has one killer view and it comes highly recommended. But if you are lucky enough to be gazing out at this expanse from your balcony, there are very few things that could get on your nerves.

Need a few hints? Here ya go:

*The island is owned by one corporation. So a room card will get you everything.

*The hotel has power outlets in each parking spot for the sole form of transportation.

*Just down the road is a resort that takes home the title as one of the Top 100 in the World.

*Since the island is prone to some nasty weather, the hotel boasts the tallest, highest-speed, external observation elevators in the country.

Guess the Hotel Revealed: Vision Quest Ranch in CA. Not Africa!

Elephants, zebra, water buffalo and ostrich roam the play pen surrounded by bungalows at Vision Quest Ranch

Last week we tried to stump you with another game of Guess the Hotel, sharing a photo of an elephant who had joined us for breakfast off our porch at Vision Quest Ranch B&B. We figured you'd assume an African lodge and never an exotic wild animal retreat in Salinas, California, but doggonit, you done figured it out in less than 24 hours in one correct reply. Right on, hotel smarty pants!

We shared a full report about a year ago when we recommended you Please Feed the Animals at Vision Quest Ranch B&B, but visited again recently as we were dying to bring the kids along and also wanted to check on rumors of a new, onsite zoo.

Guess The Hotel With An Elephant Nosing Around

November 27, 2012 at 12:47 PM | by | Comment (1)

For the most telling clues, look beyond the obvious...

It’s time to test your hotel naming swagger with another game of Guess the Hotel!

Take a look at the photo below: can you name the hotel where this African elephant was swinging a little swagger of its own?

Here are some hints:

* Technically a B&B, stay here and you get to choose from eight differently-themed military grade tents, aka bungalows.

* In the morning, your first visit will not be from housekeeping but from an African elephant like Malika here.

* The B&B goes by several names and shares its grounds with a ranch (and soon to be zoo) that's home to a multitude of exotic animals, including zebra, ostrich, camel, baboon, Bengal tigers, African lions, black bear, hyena, Siberian lynx, bearcat, and lemur.

* One of the world’s best wine regions is so close you can almost taste the Pinot Noir.

Think you've got the answer? Drop it in the comments below! And check back for the full reveal!
