With a location by the governor's residence and a tranquil city lake with rowboats for rent, this 17-room hotel has a prestige address and the pedigree of a former mansion. It's a 20-minute walk to the center from here though, so expect to pay a few extra bucks on cabs. You should also figure out your preferred decorating style before booking as this is really two hotels in one.
The original building is decorated like a Victorian tea parlor, with lots of 19th-century furniture styles, heavy wallpaper, and a certain "eau de grandma." The newer addition built two years ago fast forwards at least one century, with lots of Mexican tile, local crafts for decoration, and brighter colors all around.
Each room has a different theme, including one that gets the Frida Kahlo treatment, and a few have tile whirlpools for two.
The choice rooms are the large master suite and the apartment-sized presidential suite, the latter with its own mountain-view terrace next to the pool (pictured here).
Rates are $185 to $225 for the standards and $270 to $380 for the suites, including all taxes and a full breakfast. Book at least a month ahead and you score a 12% discount.

Is that a medieval castle? In the middle of Mexico? Hotel Castillo Santa Cecilia goes into the category of "oddities worth mentioning" rather than "places you might want to stay."
This Guanajuato hotel takes the castle theme and runs with it, inside and out. You've got an imposing stone structure on a hilltop, turrets that would work fine for firing arrows at the men loading the catapults, and furniture inside that's straight out of a King Arthur movie.
But why? Unfortunately the potential guests seem to be asking that question as well, since when we visited during a big holiday week, the hotel was deader than the Dark Ages after a plague.

Until two years ago, there was only one luxury hotel in Guanajuato, Mexico. (More on that later.) Then Villa Maria Cristina came along a few blocks away on the town's swankiest street and raised the bar a few notches. This member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World is an impressive space that manages to keep the old world charm elements while adding steam showers, whirlpool tubs, and phones from Bang & Olufsen.
Be prepared to climb a lot of stairs in this multi-level inn with various courtyards and terraces. The formal restaurant and pocket bar are on the second floor. The spa and indoor pool are down a level and more rooms are one floor up, where there is a Jacuzzi for four with a view. Only a few of the guest rooms have a killer view though: most face toward the courtyards.
Room sizes range from spacious standards with a dressing area to master suites with plenty or room for stretching out, at rates running from $180 to $390. This includes taxes, continental breakfast, and--the real shocker for the top luxury hotel in town--free WiFi! Check out the video tour here to get a view of the interior.
