The Americano Teaches Us A Thing Or Two About Culture

The best way to explain the Hotel Americano's name is to point out a piece of artwork found in the lobby—a large photo montage of President Obama, sporting an afro, from his college days. "We want to feel like a New Yorker who isn't quite from New York," a heavily-accented Carlos Couturier (co-founder of Grupo Habita, above left) explained to us during our visit yesterday.
And they've succeeded. The 56-room hotel embodies that cool, effortless—heavily multicultural—essence of America without necessarily becoming Americana. From the minimalist rooms (low beds are as pervasive here as the concrete floors) to the sexy rooftop lounge and pool deck to the Bebel Gilberto-curated music playing overhead, there is a little bit of everything spread around this hotel.

Are You Ready To Do The Americano?

We hate to say it, but September isn't that far away, and one fall opening we're keeping a close eye on is the Hotel Americano. One reader tipped us off to the fact that the Americano's website now has availability starting—just as promised—September 1!
An Uptown Queen (220 square feet, free WiFi, and a "city view") matches the starting rate of $325 that we originally heard about. So is this for real? And can we expect any other upcoming changes to the website? A representative for the hotel confirmed that indeed, the hotel will be taking guests as of September 1, and that, yes, the website will be updated. Not that a hotel website incontrovertibly has to have photos of its rooms, but, you know. It helps.

Inside Pix of Hotel Americano Leave Us Wanting More

When we last checked Hotel Americano in NYC, the hotel was opening to guests on September 1 (at least that's what their website reservations system said) but now according to PX This, the place could be opening in July.
PX This attended a private preview event the hotel hosted recently for nearly 260 people (it's ok, we don't expect to get invited to these things when we complain about a hotel's opening delays) and got to look around some of hotel's public spaces including the restaurant, lobby and courtyard. Sadly, no room shots are to be found. But since parts of the public spaces are still under construction, we're guessing the rooms aren't quite camera-ready yet.
While the hotel is hosting private events for the next few weeks, PX This says it will open to the general public in July. The website, however, still says September 1.

Hotel Americano Shows Some More Skin (But Still Has No Real Website)

The Hotel Americano first hotel from Mexico's Grupo Habita is set to open in New York's Chelsea neighborhood sometime this spring and as you probably know, HotelChatter has been keeping some close tabs on the construction.
Last month, it looked like there was still a lot of work to do but thanks to these photos snapped by the erstwhile PBB we're getting a better idea of what this new hotel will look like.

The Work Continues On Hotel Americano

The first hotel outside Mexico for stylish boutique brand Grupo Habita is still well under construction in Chelsea in the shadow of the High Line part dos. We grabbed these photos today, which show the glassed-in elevator shaft, lots of work remaining to be done—and what appear to be the makings of balconies overlooking 27th Street.

Mexico's Grupo Habita Will Bed Down In New York This Spring

So, some Monday morning news: The Mexican boutique hotel chain Grupo Habita, is coming to New York this spring. Yes, we've heard news of the project here and there, but after chatting with one of the co-owners, Rafael Micha, in Las Vegas earlier this month, we confirmed that this is a real play to establish the brand in New York.
Word is that Hotel Americano, currently slated to open with just 56 rooms on West 27th Street, won't angle to make a PR splash, but it's nevertheless big news for the New York market that's likely most focused on the February opening of the Mondrian. After all, this is the first Habita hotel to open outside Mexico.
