The Greenwich Hotel Has an Illegal Penthouse
June 4, 2008 at 10:15 AM | 0 Comments

The NY Daily News is reporting that the still-under-construction penthouse of Robert DeNiro's Greenwich Hotel is of an illegal size and could possibly be torn down.
"We approved the addition of a seventh story in November 2004," says Landmarks spokeswoman Elisabeth de Bourbon. "Yet the structure that was built is steeper and its footprint bigger, making it significantly more visible [from the street] than originally allowed." De Niro has asked the commission - which is tasked with making sure new buildings blend into the neighborhood - to retroactively "legalize" what he's already built.
We're pretty sure that's what will happen when it goes to the NYC Landmarks Commission on June 17. Afterall, this is DeNiro in New York. He's helped make Tribeca what it is today.
Meanwhile Bloomberg News has a nauseating review of the place. However, it was nice to hear that the Greenwich "pretension of the [Gramercy Park Hotel] and the unsteady service" of the newly restored Plaza hotel. Too bad they were a little too elitist to let us have a look.

Greenwich Hotel :: T Minus Three Days
March 28, 2008 at 4:38 PM | 0 Comments

The Greenwich Hotel is set to open in four days and we managed to get some snaps of the place today.
There wasn't a whole lot of activity going on at the place. It looked like almost all of the exterior construction was finished but we gather there is still some work to be done inside.
We peeked in a bit at Ago which occupies the ground floor and there were a couple of dudes in suits milling around.
We also spied some people sitting on a windowsill on the first floor but they were definitely not hotel guests. Ho-hum.
All in all, this "overbaked cookie" looks like it's done to us. We'll find out how the opening goes on Tuesday.
More snaps after the jump.

Greenwich Hotel Maybe to Open in March?
January 22, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 2 Comments

After getting a little frustrated with Greenwich Hotel's website yesterday, we picked up the phone to see what the reservations agent has to say about booking a room there.
HotelChatter: Hi, I was just curious when exactly were you opening?
Greenwich Hotel: (In a sexy accent, maybe French?) In March.
HotelChatter: Really, March? I read on a website that it was opening April 1st.
Greenwich Hotel: (In a still sexy but now slightly confused accent) Um. Yes, we are taking reservations for stays on April 1st and thereafter.
HotelChatter: But you might open in March?
Greenwich Hotel: (In a panicked sexy accent) Well, yes. But we haven't decided what day we are opening in March. It is not definite but if you give us your information we can call you when we know.
HotelChatter: (In a slightly panicked non-sexy accent): Um, no that's ok. We were just curious.
So there you have it. It may open in March but we aren't counting on it.

Greenwich Hotel's Funky Website Reservations
January 21, 2008 at 3:15 PM | 0 Comments

So we all know that Robert DeNiro's Greenwich Hotel will be open in time (finally!) for his Tribeca Film Festival from April 1-20. Then the hotel is closed for a short time until May 5th when it opens again.
Rooms are even going at a special "preview rate" of $475, down from the rack rate of $725. A "deal!"
But when you open the reservations page on the hotel's website, you are greeted with the above message. So we headed over to the month of June but the entire month of June, July and thereafter was Xed out.
We have no idea what's going on here. However, it's probably nothing more than the fact that they haven't really finessed their booking system. And the pop-up message is just a way of telling people that the special preview rate is only good until June 1st.
Either way, should you be inclined to spend $475 or $725 at the Greenwich Hotel, we say talk to a live person rather than book online until this stuff is sorted out.

DeNiro's Greenwich Hotel: Not To Be Confused With NYU's Greenwich Hotel
January 16, 2008 at 12:03 PM | 0 Comments

Robert DeNiro's Greenwich Hotel is slated for an April opening and basically it looks like only Europeans can afford to stay at this place, especially with mounting fears of a U.S. recession.
However, NewYorkology discovered an introductory rate on the hotel's website of $475 a night for a standard courtyard room. Mind you, Ian Schrager's "game-changing" Gramercy Park Hotel didn't even cost this much in its opening weeks.
But it turns out there might be an even cheaper option at the Greenwich Hotel. The Greenwich Hotel Residence Hall, just a few blocks away.
The Greenwich Hotel Residence Hall is on 636 Greenwich Street and is part of NYU's student housing. So you can't necessarily stay here overnight on a weekend jaunt but you may want to look into their summer housing rates. Or if you are dying to stay at the Greenwich Hotel, head to Rhode Island.
