Our older-man crush on Bill Marriott is officially over thanks to his latest blog post about Marriott Golf where he writes:
A lot of my fellow corporate executives like to play golf. I have a set of clubs, but they're a little bit rusty and I've got to tell you, golf is a handicap for me. I've never been able to play the game well and that's always been a frustration. I'm sure some of you know how I feel.
Ah Bill, what coulda been. Unfortunately, we need a man who can play golf and play it well. How embarrassing would it have been if we went on a date on the links with Bill and we outscored him. Or is that underscored him? Maybe Bill can pay Tiger Woods for some lessons? That could resuscitate our crush. At least we still have the Marriott Bear.
La Quinta Resort & Club is one of our favorite desert getaways in Palm Springs. Actually, it's the only desert getaway we've ever taken but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay when we went.
Now the hotel is part of the Waldorf-Astoria Collection from Hilton Hotels and is offering a Discovery package (other hotels in the collection are also offering Discovery packages which are unique to the hotels' location.)
At La Quinta, the package includes a four-night stay for two in a Starlight Casita with a king bed. These rooms all have fireplaces and private patios with mountain views. Recently the resort put all new carpeting and 37" HD flat-screen TVs in all the rooms.
But you better like golf as the package includes two one-hour golf lessons and daily unlimited golf at one of the five championship golf courses.
There will be also spa treatments, a $100 gift certificate to any of the boutique shops on the premises, dinner for two at the Adobe Grill, and daily breakfast for two. Topping it off is an evening Jeep Tour to the San Andreas Fault and two tickets to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway which is a large cable car gondola that takes guests from the desert floor to the top of Mt. San Jacinto.
The package is priced at $3,200. To book, call 1-800-WALDORF or go online. Use the code P8 when making reservations.
We are suckers for a room with a killer view. We find that we are even more likely to forgive some minor hotel inconveniences if we can stare out the window at something pretty--yeah we are that shallow. Let's help out our fellow hotel mavens by uploading rooms with killer views to the HotelChatter/Flickr photo pool, or by sending the photo along to us. We will feature our favorites in this space from time to time. Remember to tell us the name of the hotel and the room number of the hot view.
...we are so hitting this place up.
When you want to take a holiday in paradise, check into Room 2609 at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on the island of Maui, Hawaii, and make sure the conditions are right for a rainbow.
This view probably doesn't happen every day, but even without the rainbow you'd probably feel like you'd struck your personal pot of gold if you could overlook both the swimming pool and the bay like this. In fact, the big attraction at the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is really the golf, so it's possible that some guests might even feel dissatisfied with this view, lacking any golf greens as it does. But not us.
A big word of caution, however: the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is currently CLOSED. It's getting a $125 million renovation-come-transformation ready for January 2008. Guest rooms are getting remodeled, there's a new spa and fitness center and a new Japanese restaurant. But the views should remain more or less the same.
Hyatt Hotels has announced another promotion, this one aimed at the golf enthusiasts.
From now through November 30, seasoned 18-holers or novice 9-holers can enter to win a luxury golf getaway vacation package at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort and Spa that includes five nights accommodations, daily breakfast, golf shirts, two rounds of golf at the Ko'olina Golf Course, and two 50-minute Na Ho'ola spa treatments.
Seven additional winners will receive a three-day/two-night golf getaway for two at select Golf Hyatt destinations valued at up to $1,250 that includes two rounds of golf and a mix of food and spa offerings.
Duffers should enter online at the Golf Hyatt Giveaway site. You have up to 250 chances to win the grand prize but you gotta earn them first. However, it's pretty easy to rack up your chances. For instance, signing up for the Hyatt e-newsletter gets you five extra entries and inviting your friends to the Giveaway site gets you another 50 but you gotta invite at least 10 friends.
To make your life easier, we've posted the official ways of earning more entries after the jump.
The Horseshoe Bay Resort is offering an "Unlimited Golf Getaway" featuring tee times at any of the resort's three golf courses (designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr.) and includes club cleanings, driving range access, use of golf carts, and shuttles back and forth from the greens.
And unlike many hotel packages, this one is offered year-round starting at $187 which includes breakfast. Guests also have the option of booking at the adjacent Waters at Horseshoe Bay which consists of lakefront villa accommodations ranging from one to three bedrooms and with private balconies.
The resort also has its own private landing strip, four swimming pools, a spa and fitness center, a full-service marina, five dining facilities, 12 adult tennis courts and three USTA-sponsored kids’ tennis courts. So you pretty much don't have to leave...ever.
And just so you know, this is a Marriott Hotel so keep your stogies on the golf course and not in the room.
Descriptions of the golf courses can be found after the jump.
One & Only Palmilla in Los Cabos is a favorite getaway spot for celebrities, honeymooners and rich people alike. And the hotel sure knows how to please its target clientele. The resort has just installed Coolwell G2 personal cooling units into every golf cart at the Palmilla Golf Club.
And apparently, these aren't just any old AC units. The G2 "produces air at 45 to 50 degrees below ambient temperature and its patented technology actually strips moisture from the air." There are two units per golf cart and they are activated when you sit down on the cart's seat.
Cubicle Dreamin' is a feature in which we ask the hotel mavens to take some time out of their busy work day, surf the Internet, and tell us what hotel they wish they could beam themselves to right that very second--all on the slave driving companies dime, of course. Oh, like these people aren't surfing aimlessly anyway--at least now their purposeless clicking will be cobbled together into useful hotel stories--we hope. Have a destination hotel you are just dying to leave your cube for? Send the story our way.
In this episode, Hotel Maven PBB dreams of an exotic golf getaway. Enjoy.
I was out of the cubicle the other day, chatting with some other drones when the talk turned to golf. That's when I realized it'd been ages since I'd hit the links. While the dudes talked about the local greens, I drifted off into Aman-fantasy land.
As in the Amanusa on Bali. Sure there are plenty of dope hotels with golf courses, but how many of those have thatched-roof suites with canopy beds and private pools overlooking the Indian Ocean? Exactly.
There's even a deal on right now, if you can call it that. Book a room and you get a free round at the Bali Golf and Country Club. Of course, that pool suite will cost you $1,100, a night but that's why we call it Cubicle Dreamin'.
If it's good enough for George Bush, it should be good enough for us too. Host of the 2005 G8 Summit, Scotland's Gleneagles Hotel has always sounded pretty posh, but a recent Guardian review made it sound, well, a bit posh, but also quite a lot of fun.
The opulent touches are there at this famous golf resort: there's a heavily-booked, 2-Michelin-star restaurant, floor heating and remote control curtains. Still there's a lot of fun to be had here, with activities like minigolf, falconry (getting those massive birds to land on your arm, that is), and even shooting, all with instructors available--well, all except the mini-golf.
The Guardian reviewer wasn't happy with the state of the too-much-concrete spa, or the 90-minute limit on bicycle borrowing, but other than that, Gleneagles got a big thumbs up. Another surprise is it's not prohibitively expensive: a current deal for April offers double rooms including breakfast for $380. Obviously not the same room that George Bush stayed in.
