Mövenpick Converts a Water Tower in Hamburg

Earlier this year the Mövenpick Hotel Hamburg opened up inside a converted water tower in Sternschanzen Park, near the Hamburg fair grounds. Being a 1910 water tower means that the Hamburg Mövenpick doesn't exactly have the standard shape of a hotel, making it an interesting place to stay from the outside at least.
Inside, there are 226 rooms spread over 17 floors, which the hotel describes as "4-star plus" in quality. Rooms near the top of the tower have great views over the city. The restaurant is in an added two-storey glass building to the south of the main tower to provide room for up to 145 guests at one sitting; there's a large banquet room above it.
A metro station is just a two-minute walk away, although some people suggest the Mövenpick is in a slightly seedy part of town, so take care. Since it opened the majority of its customers have been business travelers but it seems like a unique enough hotel to attract the full range of guests. Average room rates start at around $250 a night.

Eurail Hotel Stop: Hamburg's Hotel Terminus Near the Terminal

If you catch the full name of this hotel in northern Germany's fantastic harbour city, Hamburg, you'll see that it's called the Hotel Terminus am Hbf.: a German abbreviation for at the main train station. That makes it our pick for a convenient and not-budget-breaking Eurail stop in Hamburg. It's not too fancy, but it is literally less than two minutes' walk from the main Hamburg station, without being noisily right on top of it. It's also not far from the harbor and very convenient for the department stores and main downtown shopping area of Hamburg, which definitely comes recommended.
So while he Hotel Terminus is not fancy, it's very reasonable: prices for double rooms range from 66 to 99 Euros ($90 - $135), and you can also get a four-bed suite for a maximum of 140 Euros ($190) a night on weekends. Pick your room carefully - you can get help by checking the quaint English translations on their room description page, including these gems:
The most frequently room that are chosed by our guests is the doubleroom ... [Triple room]: This kind of room is good for a nuclear family, but also for adolescents or for guests who want to spent money.
The extra bonus is a good German buffet breakfast is included in all room prices, whether you're a guest who wants to spend money or not.

Moosleitner Has Lightning WiFi in Bavaria

WiFi and Health. That's the motto the Bavarian hotel Gasthof Moosleitner uses to sell its services to you. And why not. The Moosleitners are proud of their hi-tech service:
As an exclusive service, we offer you for free wireless Internet in all public areas as well as in all rooms. If you don´t have a WLAN compatible laptop, then of course we will provide you with the necessary equipment. VPN connection and Voip possible.
Of course, you might prefer to enjoy the mountains around Salzburg and Berchtesgaden which surround the Gasthof--for a taste of the scenery, you can always check out their webcam which is updated every 15 minutes.
Or just kick back in German amience, since the Gasthof Mossleitner is one of those typically authentic old inns, dating back even to the thirteenth century. Room rates start from 100 (US$135) per double for the smaller rooms up to 123 ($170) for the larger rooms, with a hearty continental breakfast included. If you're a golf nut then you get a bonus 40% discount on green fees at the Berchtesgaden golf club.

Cubicle Dreamin': Medieval Germany at the Eisenhut
Cubicle Dreamin' is a feature in which we ask the hotel mavens to take some time out of their busy work day, surf the Internet, and tell us what hotel they wish they could beam themselves to right that very second--all on the slave driving companies dime, of course. Oh, like these people aren't surfing aimlessly anyway--at least now their purposeless clicking will be cobbled together into useful hotel stories--we hope. Have a destination hotel you are just dying to leave your cube for? Send the story our way.
In this episode, Hotel Maven Amanda K finds an interesting place for a Deutchland getaway. Enjoy.

One of the most romantic towns in Germany (though unfortunately it's sometimes too popular with the tourists) is Rothenburg ob der Tauber, one of those quintessential cobble-stoned German villages that you can't help but fall in love with. My pick for an authentic German weekend is a stay at the Eisenhut Hotel Rothenburg--granted the name mightn't sound quite so romantic but the hotel location (and what's inside) make up for it. It actually is made up of four houses "joined", each of them several hundred years old. Some of the antique-furnished rooms have views over the gorgeous Tauber Valley, and it's right next to one of the best shops around for Christmas decorations.
A quick warning, though: I was totally convinced that the Eisenhut was the place for me until I read further on their homepage:
The most wealthy and powerful families of Rothenburg used to live in these houses. Feel their spirit in today's hotel rooms.
Sounds to me suspiciously like this place is haunted, but perhaps that's part of the charm.
Doubles start from around $200, or you can pick up all kinds of great deals for special occasions, including an Easter deal, a Christmas Market package, or weekends to coincide with historical festivals in Rothenburg with extras like theater tickets and museum entrances thrown in.

Room with a Killer View: Schlosshotel Buhlerhoehe

We have to say this killer view from the Schlosshotel Buhlerhoehe with its view of the Rhine Valley is the best we have seen yet. This guest got lucky too, checking in just as the sun was setting. However, we are sure all the rooms at this hotel which is a palace atop a mountain in Germany's Black Forest, have equally stunning views. And if it's good enough for Beckham and the rest of England's World Cup team, then it's good enough for you.

Women Only in Berlin

Sorry guys, this one's not for your eyes (and that's not a ploy to get you interested).
Sometimes hotels are just for women. In Berlin there's more than one women-only hotel, and your experience can be good. In particular, the almost hostel-priced Intermezzo Hotel for Women isn't fancy, but has a lot of pluses. Location is the first bonus: in the heart of the center of old East Berlin, walking distance to Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, the Holocaust Memorial or the Postdamer Platz, and still near public transport like the subway (U-bahn line 2) and the tram (S-Bahn).
Berlin's generally a safe city for tourists anyway, but sometimes its size and constant day-or-night buzz can be a bit unsettling for women traveling alone, and that's why we rate these hotels highly. Intermezzo features relatively basic rooms--definitely no luxury--but with the extra touches that make you realise it's made by and for women. Cotton face-wipes, for example, replace the mini-bar scotch bottles, and more useful cupboard space is built in. And everything has this special quietness, cleanliness and fresh smell about it that's sometimes even missing at a 5-star.
Simple but good--sounds a bit like a healthy breakfast cereal.

Drink, Ski, Dance, and Be Merry at Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten

If you're a ski buff, then you know about Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a town that is so quintessentially Bavarian. This place is so cute that you'll probably be asked to leave your cynicism at customs.
The number one rated hotel in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (you'll probably find yourself wanting to say this over and over) on TripAdvisor is the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten because of its location right in town and its B&B feel. Guests can get to the slopes in no time from the resort:
The hotel really is conveniently located across the street from the train station, maybe a one-minute walk, if that. We easily reached other nearby attractions from the hotel on foot, as used the local bus system for farther locations like the Olympic Ski Stadium and even the Neuschwanstein Castle (a two-hour bus ride, but inexpensive and beautiful through the Bavarian countryside.
As for the décor, expect simplicity and mountain style and you won't be disappointed, the highlight is the view of the Alps outside your window. You won't find WiFi in the rooms or a spa to relax in after skiing all day. But you can relax the German way with a big ol' Bavarian beer to soothe your muscles. How cute is that?
