As The World Turns, More and More Hotels Will Be Opening

While we continue to recover from last week’s ma-jah announcement of Tommie Hotels, the lovechild of Commune and Thompson, we have a roundup of news bites from around the world for you this Monday morning. Join us as we hop from Bali to Venice, Amsterdam to China, and Switzerland to Australia, for updates on everything from brand new Chinese brand Ahn Luh to the old school Gritti Palace.

Starting in Southeast Asia, Regent Hotels delivered on the promised opening of its new resort on Bali this past weekend, with 94 suites, one Regent Villa, 25 residences, and that inviting-looking infinity pool above. The Bali resort follows last year’s arrival in Phuket, which we swung by recently to see for ourselves how Regent’s first opening in years would stack up – more on that to come.

The Aayu Will Be Mumbai’s Highest Hotel (And Have Robuchon’s Atelier)

If we’ve said it once, we’ve said it a million times: being the tallest or highest hotel in the city / country / world is a much coveted label (hello, JW Marriott Marquis Dubai!), and if that means killer views can be had, we’re not complaining.

This time next year, Mumbai will have a new contender for its highest hotel title, when The Aayu Mumbai opens on the top five floors of Kohinoor Square’s Central Tower, the tallest commercial building in the city.

A Luxury Hotel You Can’t Stay At: The Ananti Kumgang Mountains

With hotels opening all over the world, including some of its most remote corners, there are few places that we never read about in all the coverage we see week after week. North Korea is one of those however, and we’ve previously said their Hotel of Doom, surely the world’s longest hotel delay, really didn’t have to open for us at all.

Browsing around the website of GHM Hotels to read about their development plans for The Chedi brand, we were surprised to see a reference to a hotel in North Korea: The Ananti Kumgang Mountains.

In case you had any hopes of visiting though, you can’t: the hotel is not operational until further notice due to the border closure between North and South Korea.
