The Jade Hotel Will Finally Open on February 1st

A new year, a new hotel for NYC!

Despite initially saying they would be open for NYC's Hotel Week, The Jade Hotel will now FINALLY open on February 1st and the opening room rates are pretty fantastic for a new hotel in Manhattan. Granted, it's the dead of winter but we'd be ok with spending $199 a night for a Grove Queen which includes free WiFi, Bigelow toiletries and a dandy retro-rotary phone to order room service on. Plus, that rate is a lot less than the $400 price tag mentioned back in October.

But if you're feeling flush, you could splurge on the Greenwich Penthouse suite on the top floor which has a walk-out balcony and a spa tub and a separate shower. (Sadly, it still only offers a queen-sized bed.)

Like all good new hotels about the open, the Jade has its Facebook page up and running with a bunch of photos of its Parisian-inspired decor. Have a look-see now at those snaps now and maybe we'll have some new ones for you shortly!

[UPDATE] Reminder! NYC's Hotel Week Starts Tomorrow

January 4, 2013 at 5:56 PM | by | Comments (0)

[UPDATE: We’ve been following The Jade hotel pretty closely, and was surprised (and delighted) they were on this updated list. Then we remembered rumblings about a February opening, so we had to double check if they’d be honoring reservations for Hotel Week. We contacted the hotel's PR team and was told that when first signing up with Hotel Week, a November opening was anticipated. Due to Superstorm Sandy, the debut was majorly delayed (not because of damages, but setbacks with the utility company). So, unfortunately The Jade will not be participating in Hotel Week. Stay tuned for more news on the eagerly anticipated opening.]

We let you know about NYC's Hotel Week early, so it may have slipped your mind.

But here’s a brief recap:
From January 4 – 20, 2013, hotels that normally go up to $500 a night will be on sale starting at just $100 and none coming in at more than $250. The reason behind this promo is simple—January is one of the slowest tourism times for NYC, so this is one way for hotels to bring in guests.

We’ve been keeping an eye on the list to see if anything jumps out at us (we are bummed that our beloved Andaz isn’t participating this year), and we think there plenty worth checking out. And hey, if you live in the city, now's your chance to do that overnight you've been wanting to try.

Francophiles, Rejoice! NYC's Newest Hotel Will Be Paris-Inspired

Nevermind that NY Times article saying The Jade Hotel would be open by late October (ie, now). Because it ain't happening. However, the hotel is almost there!

Last week, we got a chance to poke around the unfinished lobby, restaurant and some of the rooms. Yes, the place still looks like a construction site. But we have a much better idea what to expect: a sunken lobby with a fireplace, "catacomb"-like brick vaulted archways connecting the lobby and the restaurant, small but stylish guest rooms inspired by 1920s Paris, and unobstructed views of lower Manhattan.

2nd Annual New York Hotel Week Now On Sale

September 13, 2012 at 5:09 PM | by | Comments (0)

Ok, it’s clear that advanced planning can be a good thing in the hotel world when it comes to new properties. It can be important when you’ve got plans to stay at a New York City hotel where rates can be outrageously high.

Sure, we tout the wonderfulness of last-minute bookings using apps like Hotel Tonight if you’re the footloose and fancy-free sort. But, if you crave a bit more structure, take advantage of the Second Annual “Hotel Week” on January 4 – 20, 2013. During this time you can score New York City hotel rooms for $100, $200 and $250 at more than 20 hotels. Although we liked the list a bit better last year, there's still some great deals here considering some of these places normally charge more than $500 a night!

And guess what? You can book NOW. The codes below are live for the hotels on sale. The catch? The stay is for, in the words of the Dreamgirls song, “One Night Only”. But we say there’s nothing to stop you from hotel hopping if you’ve got the chops and plan your neighborhoods right. Sure, it'll be winter, but that's never stopped people from visiting the city!

Here’s a sample of what’s on sale. You’ll find the full list of hotels here soon. But click on our links now for the lowdown on these properties:

POD 39 and 51
Rate: $100
How to Book: Call 212-355-0300 and mention “Hotel Week”

Union Square Is Definitely Set To Get A Jade Hotel. Or Is It A Gem Hotel?

New York being the way it is, sometimes hotels take on a life of their own, with no one really being quite sure what the hotel's identity is, even after it's opened (hello, Hotel Williamsburg! And, for that matter, Hotel Lola). That seems to be the case for GEM Union Square, which we last reported on in May.

According to the city's hotel development records, the hotel will be called the Jade Hotel Greenwich Village (even though it's in Union Square, not Greenwich Village) and it's already got a website up. The only confusing thing is: Atelier & Co (the folks who designed the property) have a page on their website that uses the 'GEM' and 'Jade' names interchangeably. So which is it gonna be?

A Sneak Peek at The Facade of The GEM Hotel Union Square

May 23, 2012 at 3:01 PM | by | Comments (0)

Yesterday, we reported that the GEM Hotel Union Square aka The Jade Hotel would be opening in late 2012. Now today, we've been blessed with some renderings of what the hotel's exterior will look like.

Brooklyn-based Atelier and Company, not Gene Kaufman, is apparently handling the architecture for the facade of the hotel and they've given a "cleaner, richer and more authentic approach" to the hotel's entrance.

You can scroll through renderings here or you can skip over to the company's Facebook page for updated photos (from yesterday) of the construction progress. Wheee!

Given how much we loved our stay way back when at the intimate GEM Hotel in Chelsea, which sports a similar authentic facade, we're getting mighty excited for the GEM Union Square. Or is it the Jade? Hopefully, they'll get a website going up soon so we can settle this once and for all.

The GEM Hotel Union Square Is Expected To Open in Late 2012

Where: 54 W. 13th Street [map], New York, NY, United States
May 22, 2012 at 11:14 AM | by | Comments (0)

From sometime in 2011

It's been a while since we heard of any activity from Gem Hotels but as we were scrolling through an NYC Hotel Development report, we noticed that there's plans for a new hotel in Greenwich Village from Gemini Real Estate Advisors, the same folks who run the three GEM Hotels in NYC.

Called The Jade Hotel Greenwich Village, the hotel will open on 54 W. 13th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues with 114 rooms. A projected opening date is listed for late 2012. As it turns out this is definitely the GEM Hotel Union Square, although the Greenwich Village nabe destination has us slightly perplexed.

Need Tix for the Tribeca Film Festival? Book a Room at the Gem Chelsea

The Tribeca Film Festival kicks off next week and while we've found several hotels with availability and reasonable rates, including these three, getting tickets is a different story.

Single tickets and discounted packages are currently on sale for Amex cardholders. This weekend more tickets will open up to downtown NYC residents while more tickets will be released on April 18 to the general public.

Fortunately, the tickets aren't crazy expensive. They start at $8 for matinees and $16 for evenings and weekend screenings. But the add-on charges are silly. For example, it's $3 to order online and $3 to print at home. You could save all that hassle by staying at The GEM Chelsea.

Plan Ahead to Score 20 Percent Off GEM Hotel Rooms and Free Gift Cards

December 14, 2010 at 12:45 PM | by | Comments (0)

You may be scrambling to find those last-minute Christmas gifts, but you'll want to make a New Year's resolution to drop those procrastination tendencies to get this deal from GEM Hotels. If you book early and prepay in full, you can get 20 percent off of your room.

You really have to be a planner for this one. The New York chain, which has hotels in Chelsea, Midtown West and Soho, will slash the rates, but you will have to pay it all upfront, it's nonrefundable and no changes are allowed. Though you'll be rewarded with rates as low as $135 a night, which is pretty darn good for a Manhattan hotel.

The GEM Hotel Breaks Ground in Union Square

We've long been a fan of the GEM Hotels in New York after a rather good stay at their Chelsea hotel so if NYC is gonna get yet another new hotel, it might as well be a GEM.

Ground has officially broken on The GEM Hotel Union Square at 52 West 13th Street where a 113-room hotel will open in 2012. Despite having three other properties in Manhattan, this GEM will actually be the brand's flagship hotel.

The building is designed by Andres Escobar and the architect is Gene Kaufman, he of the Tri-Pack Hotel. Fortunately, this hotel will be a little less crazy-looking than the Tri-Pack.

GEM Hotels in New York Now Have an iPad in The Lobby

May 20, 2010 at 5:50 PM | by | Comment (1)

Another week, another batch of hotels that are using iPads!

Today we got word that the Gem Hotel Chelsea and the Gem Hotel LES Soho will now be offering guests the use of an iPad in their lobbies. Here's a snapshot of the Gem Hotel Chelsea's iPad. The Gem Hotel SoHo will get theirs tomorrow on Monday.

Guests can use the iPad to listen to music, watch movies, go on Facebook and Twitter, make dinner reservations, play games, look up the NYC subway map or the city's bike route (among other apps). As of now, there's no time limit but the hotel may implement a "borrowing time" later in the future.

Check out our review of the Gem Hotel Chelsea here!

Launch Your Own Hotel Takeover With the GEM Hotel Midtown West

Go To The Hotel's Web

Have you ever dreamed of taking over an entire hotel, just like those kids in Hotel for Dogs or like Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez? Well, now you can do it without having to set up a makeshift animal shelter or get all nationalistic and chummy with the military. That’s because the GEM Hotel Midtown West is “inviting” guests to takeover all of its 39 rooms. The Hotel Takeover offer is available in January and February 2010, which gives you ample time to save the $5,000 you’ll need for one night of playing hotelier. (Or you could just put it on your “Dear Santa” list.)

The five grand is the starting rate (it's based on dates and availability) but that works out to about $128 per room per night, and you also get complimentary high-speed Internet access, bottled water, and Wolfgang Puck coffee. The GEM has a mix of King and Duo-Double rooms to house your friends, but you’ll want to book yourself into the Terrace Room, so you can get some “fresh air” (the hotel is located near 10th Avenue and the entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel.)
