One Hotel We Do Not Want to Open

October 12, 2011 at 10:25 AM | by | Comment (1)

As we begin to go through the list of hotels that were to open in 2011, here's one hotel that we do not want to open---the Hotel of Doom aka aka The Ryugyong Hotel in Pyongyang, North Korea.

The Telegraph UK reports that thanks to investments made by an Egyptian construction group, the hotel is now readying for an April 2012 opening after having stopped work on the tower in 1993. Opening day will actually fall on April 15, what would have been the 100th birthday of nation's founder Kim Il-sung.

So what will be inside the world's fugliest hotel?

While driving down the highway on the way to the popular Delaware weekend destination of Rehoboth Beach, you'll end up passing a stream of Comfort Inns, Rodeway Inns and various other "Inns," but it's this one that caught our eye.

First, it was the "Best Buy on the HWY" sign that made us turn our heads, but then the faux-White House structure set just back from the highway had us intrigued. It looked like some sort of dressed up old brick apartment building, and yet it was a Golf Club as well as a hotel?

This, the Heritage Inn and Golf Club, where nightly rates starts at $129 during the summer, is a perfect example of the type of accommodation that appears every so often along the East Coast highways.

A Hotel Room Where the Drapes Don't Match the Carpets or the Bedspread

Yes, this was once a real hotel room in Las Vegas at the former Greek Isles Hotel and Casino which has now become the Clarion Hotel Las Vegas.

The hotel's management has assured us that the bedding in the hotel has been updated, even though it appears the website photos have not. The hotel has also made upgrades to its restaurant and its business center yet remember, because this is a Choice Hotel, there is free WiFi throughout.

What we're also digging about this hotel is that it's pet-friendly and has a casino on site (Typically, the budget brand hotels in Vegas do not have casinos.) It's location is decent, next to the Las Vegas Convention Center and close to Wynn/Encore. Room rates start around $84 a night and free continental breakfast is included too.

But will we take a chance on this hotel during our next trip to Vegas? Sure, so long as they update those room photos.

Last night, campaign aides confirmed that Senator Barack Obama is preparing to throw the country's biggest party -- or the biggest sobfest, depending on which ticket you support -- at Chicago's Grant Park.

As one of the the Windy City's most revered public spaces, and the beneficiary of more than a decade of a multi-million dollar renovations, this may very well be the country's biggest post-election party hot spot the night of November 4.

There's only one hotel that's closest to all the Election Night action: The Best Western Grant Park Hotel. But is Barack Obama or any candidate for that matter, worth spending a night in a room that looks like that? Eeek.

Then again, convenience may win out here. You can literally walk just a few steps from the park back to the hotel after the party/sobfest at any hour.

It's time for the big reveal in our latest edition of Guess the Hotel and a giant gold star sticker is in the mail to PatrickSW who correctly guessed that this fugly hotel is indeed the Days Inn in Santa Monica. Here it is in its full glory and here is how the hotel describes its unique look:

Come and experience an architecturally unique encounter at the whimsically designed Inn that is destined to lift your spirits and caress your heart.

Funny. Everytime we drive by this hotel we either gag a little or cry. Guests have mixed reviews on the place with the true bright spot here being not the pink paint but the low value. Suffice to say, we'd take an Aloft here anyday.
