The Five Best Hotels for the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Parade

November 2, 2009 at 12:54 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Yes, once again it's time for our annual list of Best Hotels For Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is our fourth installment and while last year's choices and anything in the vicinity of Times Square still holds true, we decided to do away with the old and bring in some new choices. And it looks like the Macy's Day parade will be trying something new itself on November 26th.

This year the parade will go down 7th Avenue instead of the old Broadway. The start will still kick off at 77th and Central Park West.

Sadly, the cast of Glee will not be performing at the parade, a lame decision on Macy's and NBC's part but there's still plenty of traditional fun to be had. However, you may miss out on all of it if you don't book soon. As we said last year, the early bird totally gets the good, crunchy, still warm part of the stuffing here.

The Five Best Hotels For St. Patrick's Day

March 3, 2009 at 3:38 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

Knick, knack Paddy whack, find us a hotel room....

St. Patrick's Day falls on a Tuesday this year, meaning most folks are celebrating the Luck of the Irish the weekend before. But the die-hard green beer-drinkers (and of course, college kids) will remain true to the 17th.

This holiday is one where a hotel room is completely necessary. You don't want to pull a Mel Gibson on this night and while some of you might have alternative sleeping arrangements (Yes! We're talking to you serial bed-hoppers and couch-surfers) we're thinking that we'd like to end a night of Erin Go Braugh revelry and the unfortunate "Come On Eileen" sing-along on a nice fluffy bed with (hopefully) a toilet very, very, very nearby.

Here are our top picks for Hotels for St. Patrick's Day.

Five Hotels in Miami Under $300 for President's Week

February 3, 2009 at 2:03 PM | by juliana | 2 Comments

Hotels probably consider February one of the most wonderful times of the year, even in a rough economy like this. Aside from lovers taking Valentine's Day getaways, hotels have the opportunity to capitalize on families with children who have the week off in the middle of the month known as President's Week which celebrates the birthdays of U.S. presidents Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. (You know, we almost forgot about this significance since for so long it's usually meant "vacation" for us.)

This year, President's Week starts on February 16 and lasts through the 20th. We decided to look at the rates in Miami for those dates. Why Miami? Because it's easy to get to and because it's warm, especially for the folks in the Northeast and Midwest. Also, there's a ton of hotels here so you can always find you what you're looking for. While there could possibly some of you out there who want to spend $900+ a night at The Raleigh Hotel (yes, that's the current going rate), we're going to keep these picks under $300 for you.

After the jump we rounded up the Five Hotels in Miami for President's Week.

Five Hotels for Quick MLK Day Getaways

January 7, 2009 at 2:35 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

Martin Luther King Day is just around the corner and for most of America (except HotelChatter*), this is a day off from work that was designated in honor of the greatest civil rights leader of our time. Except it's really just a three-day weekend with an excuse to go away. (If you want to buck the trend, make it a day of service instead.)

While Chris Elliott says 2009 will be the year of the "naycation", we tend to think that now more than ever people need to escape all the doom and gloom. (Or as Gadling put it, a "yaycation.") But where will all these yaycationers go?

Skiing and someplace warm seem to be the top two types of quickie getaways. So we looked at a few hotels that were either in the mountains or near the beach. We tried to pick ones with reasonable rates but also ones that had a lot to do on the properties themselves (thus saving you from having to trek or drive anywhere else).

Without any further interruption, here are our Five Best Hotels for Quickie MLK Day Getaways.

Five Hotels For Working on Your Fitness

January 5, 2009 at 2:45 PM | by JetSetCD | 1 Comment

As we are all too well aware, the start of the new year is typically the time to reflect on your health and make some resolutions to do better by it. If you're a frequent traveler, one of the first changes to make (if you haven't already), is to incorporate some light exercise into each of your days, since the rest of the time is spent stressing or eating food on-the-go. To gain musculature along with flyer miles, luckily a few hotels have a better idea of a workout than simply a few guilty stretches on the airplane to save you from deep vein thrombosis; they've got the goods to be our Five Hotels For Working on Your Fitness.

1. The Fitness Suite at New York's Affinia Dumont With a deal that's definitely not for the weak of wallet, the Affinia can plop you in a large deluxe room complete with cardio equipment, free weights, and sauna for $799 a night. If you're more about the vacation than the workout, stay in a regular room from $250 a night, and make use of their gym lockers, sneaker valet, mini-bar packed with healthy snacks, and "fit kit" ordered up for a mini tone-up in your room. The Affinia even offers a fitness concierge who offers complimentary wellness consultations, just in case you can't decide whether to start with your obliques or biceps.

Five Hotels To Hit Up For NYC's Restaurant Week

January 5, 2009 at 12:17 PM | by Jenna | 2 Comments

New Yorkers (or New York tourists): Winter Restaurant Week is upon us. During this magical time — which runs January 18-23 and 25-30 — over 250 NYC restaurants offer fixed-price lunches for $24.07 and dinners for $35.00. Reservations opened up today, and for the first time ever, some participating spots are offering Sunday Restaurant Week deals (an affordable gourmet hangover antidote?)

While the usual hyped-up spots (Union Square Cafe, Nobu, Gramercy Tavern, Tavern on the Green) make their appearances on the list, we've had our eye on a few hotel restaurants that we're dying to hit up to score ourselves a less-than-$25 meal.

The Five Best Gifts for Hotel Geeks

December 23, 2008 at 4:45 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

We here at HotelChatter have been keeping a running list on the Hotel Swag offered up by some of your favorite big-box and independent hotels alike. Some of these hotel retail products are unforgivable (a wall-mounted hair dryer from the Radisson). Some are quirky but cute (the Four Points old-timey apple peeler) and some are just downright strange (the ceramic hen from Sofitel.)

Yet there are some legit gifts that you can purchase from hotels. We rifled through the racks of hotel swag (online of course) to bring you the Five Best Gifts For Hotel Geeks.

The Five Best Hotels Near Rockefeller Center

December 10, 2008 at 3:01 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

If we had to pick one time of the year to visit New York City, we would have to pick Summertime all the way. It's blazing hot, you can wear less clothing and you can walk the streets all day long without having to get on the smelly subway trains (unless it's raining.)

But our other favorite time of the year to visit NYC is around the holidays. You can blame us for watching Miracle on 34th Street or Home Alone 2: Lost in New York too many times but the Christmas season in New York is just magical. And the best place to taste some of that cinematic holiday joy is at Rockefeller Center.

You've got The Tree. And ice-skating. Maybe even a glimpse of Tina Fey or Tracy Morgan shooting 30 Rock. The shops of Fifth Avenue are just a few dainty steps away. And now thanks to this list, so is your hotel. With one exception.

The Five Best Hotels Under $100 for the Newly Laid-Off

December 5, 2008 at 1:50 PM | by JetSetCD | 3 Comments

Pink slip, schmlink slip. Just because your business cards are now only good for jotting down your take-out Chinese orders doesn't mean you can't enjoy yourself. Take it from someone who understands: now is the time to take a brief breather and reset your life, and isn't that what hotels are for?

Ok they are good for a lot of other things too, but right this minute you need a break. Hold off on the Starbucks for a few days or liquidate the crap you kept on your desk and you'll be surprised to know that you can afford a getaway to a city that is not Detroit.
