5 All-Inclusive Resorts That Don't Feel Like All-Inclusive Resorts

August 31, 2011 at 9:35 AM | by | Comments (0)

All-inclusive Resorts used to be a cheap, spring break vacation where you sipped sugary drinks in plastic cups and shuffled through buffet lines filling up on nachos, burgers and something exotic called spaghetti bolognese. Looks like those days are a-changin’.

In a time where people (even the well-heeled) are demanding more bang for their vacation buck, many all-inclusives resorts are making a comeback, and bringing their A game.

Today you’ll see gourmet restos, free golf and even spa treatments added into the mix to lure discerning travelers to their now well-manicured grounds.

Check out these five luxury resorts that are so sleek, you’d barely know that one-price-pays-for-all.

Top Five Must-Stay Hotels in Sao Paulo

Where: Sao Paulo, Brazil
September 20, 2010 at 1:54 PM | by | Comment (1)

Brazil is hot and its going to get hotter in the next decade, thanks to the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. That's why we're having journalist Scott Mitchem, who has been traveling to Brazil for years, give us the lowdown on the country’s evolving hotel scene as well as its top players.

One would expect more than a few great hotel options in a megalopolis of 11 million people, but that’s not the case in São Paulo. Sure the city is packed with limited-service options, but we can count our favorites on one hand. In fact we have. Following are our Top Five Must-Stay Hotels in São Paulo in order of preference. We hope this helps you on your next trip to Brazil’s bustling business capital.

1.The Fasano and 2. The Emiliano: It’s almost an impossible choice between the two top options, the Fasano and Emiliano Hotels. Both properties were designed by famous local architects, and are impossibly stylish - the Fasano by Isay Weinfeld and Marcio Kogan, and the Emiliano by Arthur Casas – with fantastic guestrooms and suites, as well as great pools and spas located on their top floors. And both have ideal locations in the posh neighborhood of Jardins, just blocks away from each other.

The Fasano (pictured up top) is on a quiet, tree-lined street named after Vittorio Fasano, who began the family restaurant business nearly a century ago, while the Emiliano is on the fashionable shopping strip of Oscar Freire – it doesn’t get any better.

That's why we're having journalist Scott Mitchem, who has been traveling to Brazil for years, give us the lowdown all week on the country’s evolving hotel scene as well as its top players. Never been to Rio before? Well, allow us to tell you where you virgins should stay. outside of Brazil.

Welcome to Cidade Maravilhosa! Take our word for it: the holiday season is the best time to visit Rio de Janeiro, particularly Thanksgiving, when the weather is great and there are fewer tourists. Rio is thriving, no economic doom and gloom here. The economy is booming and spirits are high, especially with the upcoming World Cup and Olympics, which have inspired improvements just about everywhere.

But its not the easiest place to book a hotel. Prices are higher than ever, truly great options are few and far between, and location matters – especially for first-time visitors. Five Hotels for The Holidays That Go Beyond Dinner and a Room

November 18, 2009 at 9:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

Scotland's Balmoral Hotel

Hotels getting gussied up for holiday time is hardly something new, nor is the deluge of "Super-Amazing-Can't-Miss-It" packages that accompany tinsel being hung. Trust us; we'll be hearing (and writing) about them ad infinitum.

Finding metallic ornaments and maybe even a Christmas goose dinner is easy enough at any number of establishments, so today we're highlighting five that go beyond dinner and a room. There's something special shaking at this quintet of hotels, and it's up to you to experience the good tidings in person.

The Balmoral Hotel
At this high-end hotel in Edinburgh, guests get a "home away from home" vibe with a complimentary in-room Christmas tree for decorating. Also comped by the Balmoral are breakfast, use of the Balmoral Health Club, and an adjoining room for children for much-needed adult privacy.

The Five Best Hotels Just Outside of Washington, D.C.

November 13, 2009 at 4:00 PM | by | Comments (0)

In many cities, a suburban stay equals hours on the train each morning and night. But Washington D.C. is small enough that its closest suburbs are often destinations in their own rights — from Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, to downtown Bethesda, Maryland. Throw in D.C.’s crime-ridden rap, combined with the suburbs-serving Metro, and suddenly it makes sense why so many D.C. tourists actually spend the night in a neighboring city (where, ahem, the residents have the right to vote).

Of course, this is hardly a secret; so if you’re looking to the suburbs for a no-frills deal, stick to family-friendly classics. Otherwise, here are our picks for five convenient suburban DC hotels that offer more than just a free (stale) breakfast.

The Five Best Hotels in D.C. For Under $150

November 5, 2009 at 11:18 AM | by | Comments (0)

With the opening of the W and Jefferson Hotels in DC this summer, we’ve had downtown luxury DC hotels on the brain.

But for the expense account-free folks in our midst, we thought we better take a moment to remind everyone it actually can be affordable to stay in the District — that’s right, suburban family-filled chains need not apply.

Here, we rounded up five of our favorite DC hotels where weekend rates start under $150.

1. Donovan House
Thompson Hotel’s mod Donovan House sits on Thomas Circle straddles downtown offices and trendy 14th Street restaurants, bars, and boutiques. Though if you stay here you should probably eat at the hotel’s own restaurant, Zentan, if nothing else for the teensy chance that you could run into Hanson. Oh! And good news: Zentan finally got a real website up. Rooms from $129.

The Five Best Hotels For Halloween Weekend

October 19, 2009 at 4:03 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's the most wonderful time of the year--Halloween! Even better, our favorite holidays falls on a weekend this year so you can celebrate both Mischief Night and Halloween without having to deal with a hangover at work the next day. Although we can't promise you that your coworkers won't show up in witch, cat and devil costumes on Friday anyways.

If you're planning on taking your costumes to another city this Halloween, we've put together a list of five hotels that are close enough to the scary action in town but at which you can still get a good night's sleep. After all, who really wants to sleep in a room haunted by ghosts or worse, The Shining Hotel? That film was scary! We'd like a good night's sleep instead, whether it be vodka-induced or not.
