5 Hotels To Check Out For Fashion Week

February 10, 2012 at 10:25 AM | by | Comments (0)

New York Fashion Week officially kicked off yesterday, and for the next week, New York is a sloppy mess of runway events, underpaid models, and too many cocktail parties than we care to count. On the plus side, hotels always get a good piece of the action—here's a look at five hotel events this week worth your while.

Since October, Andaz 5th Avenue has been asking a rotating series of local artists to paint murals that represent their "view" of New York. Starting on Sunday, Claw Money—or Gold, as she is also known—will superimpose her own bright, raw graffiti style onto the doors of the bar downstairs.

So if you see a girl in six-inch heels with a can of spray paint, just play along. Photos from the exhibit are being sold in the bar for $5 apiece, proceeds go to charity.

The Saddest Cupcakes That Ever Graced A Hotel Bar

We showed up to a pre-Fashion Week party last night at W Union Square and, as usual with these types of events, made a beeline for the bar. Planning on ordering a quick cocktail, we then noticed something that made us chuckle. At one end of the bar on a silver tray were rows of mini cupcakes—thick with icing, delicious looking, and virtually untouched.

But what else did we expect? This is Fashion Week, after all, where anything more than a stick of celery is considered an indulgence.

Not that these sugar bombs put a damper on anyone's fun. Indeed, with guest appearances by DJ Chelsea Leyland, W Global Fashion Director Jenné Lombardo, and man-about-town Waris Ahluwalia, the music was loud and the paparazzi bulbs were a-flashin'. Boy, were we glad for that drink.

Wondering What To Wear For NY Fashion Week? First, Take Care of Your Pooch

January 26, 2012 at 9:15 AM | by | Comments (0)

NY Fashion Week is fast approaching. And you know what that means. Private parties, lobbies littered with models, and The James' signature NYFW meal.

And those are just for the humans. Fashion-forward dogs, on the other hand, will be strutting their stuff at the New Yorker. On February 10, specifically, when a New Yorkie pet apparel fashion show descends on the hotel, complete with a celebrity appearance by none other than Schmitty the Weather Dog, possibly our favorite hotel-hopping pooch ever.

Unlike the Rest of Gramercy Park Hotel, These Cocktail Dresses Are Not For Sale

Yesterday, we saw that it's possible for guests at the Gramercy Park Hotel to take home their favorite parts of the hotel when they check out. But there's something weird and creepy about taking home the cocktail dress of the waitress who just served you drinks at the bar.

Thankfully, that's not one of the options on the Amenities menu. But after you see the new dresses (worn by waitresses at Rose Bar or Gramercy Terrace), which were created by French-born designer Sophie Theallet, you might well be wishing for one of your own!

Designed out of stretch silk crepe, the garments have been made in two colors—"Gramercy red" and "midnight blue"—and are supposed to mimic the rich textures of the room interiors. Luckily, Theallet didn't get too literal and deck the waitresses out in velvet curtains and tassels in their hair.

Tablet Hotels Has Your Tickets to the Oscar de la Renta Runway Show

January 6, 2012 at 4:15 PM | by | Comments (0)

It's crazy, we know, but it's already time to plan for New York Fashion Week. The good news is that this upcoming NYFW is our personal favorite, since it's the fall/winter collections (layering, deep colors!) and it won't be hot and steamy outside as it usually is during the September shows.

If you've always wanted to attend a Fashion Week runway show as an invited guest, now is your chance. Via a Tablet Hotels contest in partnership with Oscar de la Renta, you could be headed to NYC for 5 nights at the Tribeca Grand and seats at the OdlR show.

Where to Spy the Fashion Set in London's East End

September 21, 2011 at 3:50 PM | by | Comments (0)

The stylish environs of Bethnal Green Town Hall and Apartments. Model and designer-approved.

Scrolling through the list of suggested hotels on London Fashion Week's official website reveals nothing but one West End address after another. Sure, these ritzy locales are close to the action of Somerset House and attract their fair share of designers and catwalking waifs, but the fashion set doesn't solely congregate in Knightsbridge and May Fair.

Are Guys Better Tippers? The Hotel On Rivington Thinks So

Fashion's Night Out had us in a particularly chummy mood. The liquor was flowing, the male models were plentiful, and almost all of the major hotels were hosting parties. We ended up at an event honoring Tara Subkoff's "Imitation of Christ" collection. Settled into a roped-off section at The Hotel On Rivington's darkly-lit CO-OP restaurant, we bopped along to the music, and sipped cranberry cocktails. Then, we took a trip downstairs to the bathroom.

There, we were greeted by the friendly washroom attendant, John. John couldn't have been more helpful, guiding us tipsy party-goers safely towards our assigned stalls, smiling the whole time. John also indulged us with a little Q&A, and one of the burning questions we had on our mind was: "Who tips better down here? Guys or girls?"

"Definitely the guys, without a doubt," he replied without missing a beat.

London Fashion Week is not only here, we're halfway through, and to celebrate, we popped over to the May Fair Hotel today to check on its fashiony windows which promised to show "vibrant, stylish scenes from the catwalk" by Spiros Halaris.

And wow. They're so much nicer than we imagined! And so much more discreet and tasteful! Like lifesize black and white sketches, with the odd hint of color.

As Fashion Week migrates from New York to London, Team Hotel Chatter thought it an appropriate time to sample The Berkeley Hotel's kitschy, but undeniably cute, Prêt-à-Portea. The sartorially themed tea is inspired by major designers from London and beyond, with attempts made to capture their aesthetic in the form of twee cookies and cakes.

...And Fashion Week Is Still Happening

It's the home stretch of New York's most indulgent time of year, Fashion Week, and we were itching to see some of the action happening inside hotels. Luckily, our patience was rewarded with this video taken at the Soho Grand, of luxury lingerie brand Agent Provocateur debuting their Kinky Couture line. Picturing lots of pretty long-haired girls strutting up and down a carpeted room in their skivvies? That about sums it up.

In the video, you can see expressionless fashion editors scribbling furiously in their notebooks as models show off the hand-studded, Swarovski-encrusted duds—which didn't do a great job of concealing much (but that's the point). All we can say is good thing there weren't any handbags involved.

Strike A Pose For Fashion Week

If there's any hotel that's going above and beyond the call of duty this Fashion Week, we're pretty sure the award goes to W. Not only did they perfectly time the announcement of the clean sheets-loving Jenné Lombardo as Global Fashion Director, they are also turning their own lobbies "living rooms" into photo studios.

From now until Thursday, photography students from NYC's Parsons The New School for Design will be setting up in the public spaces at W's four locations (W Downtown, W New York, W TImes Square, and W Union Square) to photograph all the fashionable crowds. So if you find yourself inside a W hotel between the hours of 5pm and 7pm, and think to yourself, "gee, I'm looking awfully dapper right now. Someone should photograph me!" then you know where to go.

The 'True Fashion Week Meal' at The James New York? Celery and Champagne.

Okay people—as of tomorrow, we'll officially be one week away from Fashion's Night Out and even though it's technically an international event, the undisputed capital is New York. Thus, we've been running down some Fashion Week Hotel packages to get you right up close to the shopping and runway action, with a welcome side of pampering.

The James New York is taking things to another level, however; they're going native with a package including the "true Fashion Week meal." Celery and champagne!
