Worst Hotel Hype: Edition Hotels

It's what you've been waiting all year for--The 2009 HotelChatter Awards! We'll be bringing you the best and worst of the year (and the decade) all day today and part of tomorrow. Agree or disagree with our picks? Air your thoughts in comments below.
WORST HOTEL HYPE: EDITION HOTELS
Yes, we know that hotel opening dates get delayed and pushed back for reasons beyond the hotel's control. Sometimes it has to do with the shipment of construction materials, sometimes it has to do with design issues, sometimes it has to do with Colombian guerillas that fancy precious marble but more often than not it has to do with money, loans and financing. And in 2009, we saw a LOT of hotel delays. It's a little painful to wade through them all.
But as far as Worst Hotel Hype, that award is going to have to go to Edition Hotels (above), the partnership between superstar hoteliers Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager. Nearly two years ago, our worlds were rocked in a good way by the announcement of the partnership between the Marriott and Schrager but yet, there's nothing on the horizon for this new luxury design brand.
Locations were announced for Miami, Chicago, DC, Scottsdale and even Hawaii and all were cancelled. The plans for the Edition Bangkok seem to still be on but that opening date is not happening until 2012. In the meantime, we're still waiting to hear more about Marriott's new Autograph Collection of existing independent hotels.
Still we're looking at 2010 as a glass already half-full. While we don't expect an actual Edition Hotel to open, we do believe we could see at least one location come to life. Pretty please Bill and Ian, with a cherry on top?

Will Edition Hotels Get Scooped By The New York Times Hotel?
News is out today that the old New York Times Building on 43rd Street will be turned into a massive entertainment complex, complete with luxury shops, a Bowlmor lanes bowling alley, nightclubs, restaurants and a high-end hotel smack dab in the middle of it all with an 11th floor sky lobby a la Mandarin Oriental.
The NY Times reports on the ambitious plans of owner/developer Lev Leviev, an Israeli billionaire:
Now Mr. Leviev is back with a partner and a new plan to turn the 15-story building, where printing presses once churned out newspapers, into a glamorous three-decker sandwich, with a vertical mall that includes luxury shops on the lower floors, along with exhibition space and a stylish bowling alley and nightclub surrounded by seven restaurants. A high-end hotel with as many as 379 rooms would sit in the middle, and 26 penthouse condominiums on top.

You'll Have to Wait a Little Longer for This 'Edition'

We now know that if there was a concrete opening date for any one of the proposed Edition Hotels that we've heard about (from Hawaii to Chicago to Istanbul), the Marriott press machine would be working overtime to build the buzz.
But since the Edition Hotels website still only has "Development" listed in the place of where "Hotel Locations" should be and that there really isn't any information on this page, we're going to go ahead and say that you'll be waiting even longer to get your "Edition."
Adding to that, we did find a sort of dubious website for the Edition Hotel Istanbul, which last time we checked was to open on December 15, but there's really nothing on this site either--just a bunch of construction pics. Ho-hum. (Also, this bland building is supposed to turn into a 7-star hotel? Eeee.)
Meanwhile, there's nothing new out there on the hotels to be included in the Autograph Collection from Marriott. We're guessing they are biding their time until 2010 to really get moving. Right? Right?
Got Edition Hotels or Autograph Collection scoop? Drop it in our stocking.

Who Will Be Marriott's Neighbor at LA Live: Schrager or Rock Stars?

Curbed LA has some great scoop today on the potential hotel that may open up across from the JW Marriott at LA Live (and also attached, a Ritz-Carlton).
Latest rumor about that mystery AEG-funded hotel--planned for right across the street from LA Live--comes courtesy of Karen Englund, director of sales and marketing for Marriott at LA Live: She tells us that the new hotel will likely either be a Hard Rock (as noted before) or an Ian Schrager hotel.
Now we, like Curbed, read the words Ian Schrager and we immediately thought of Edition Hotels. But we have to remember that Ian still can open up his own independent hotel a la Gramercy Park. But we bet Marriott would much rather an Edition Hotel than a competitor like Hard Rock.
We say? While we would love an Edition to open up in our backyard, a JW Marriott and a Ritz-Carlton might be too many luxury hotel rooms. Besides LA Live fits the Hard Rock brand better. Just our two cents. What do you think?

Jenga! More Photos of Edition Hotel Bangkok Revealed

Hotels Magazine has also discovered the forthcoming Edition Hotel Bangkok in all its Jenga-esque glory. But that's not all that's inside this hotel.
After you remove one block and place it on top of the pile, a Ritz-Carlton Residences is revealed with 200 "customized single-level and duplex condos." The 150-room Edition Hotel, spawned from Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager, will be also be a part of the 77-story tower, which will be the tallest hotel in Bangkok and include "a landscaped outdoor public plaza, 110,000-square-feet of retail space, gardens and terraces spread over several levels for restaurants, cafes, and a 24 hour marketplace." (Hotels Mag has a plethora of renderings to check out.)
But goshdarnit, why does Bangkok have to be so far away? We are still hoping Bill and Ian open one in the continental U.S. before then. Also far away? The opening date which is still projected to be 2012. Construction should begin this fall.

Edition Bangkok: It's On, Baby
Edition lives! A website called Architectural Record has announced that the Marriott-Schrager hybrid which has yet to open a single property is going to be coming to Bangkok as a component of the forthcoming MahaNakhon tower and plaza.
Inside the 1.6 million-square-foot, $515 million complex will be 200 apartments and a 150-room Edition hotel, as well as "mixed-use public and commercial space." Construction on the tower won't be starting until later this year, so the expected (fairly generous, we think) completion date is going to be in late 2012.
Some deets about the 77-story "centerpiece" tower:
A spiraling incision of “architectural pixels” travels up the building, interrupting the curtain wall to reveal a series of terraces for larger units and shared spaces. This frenetic expression, according to Scheeren, came out of the psyche of Bangkok itself, which he describes as “the most intense and chaotic” of Southeast Asian cities. Throughout the “pixels,” the tower’s conventional glass curtain wall is disintegrated into cubes that will feature a variety of vegetation circling up the building, reflecting what Scheeren calls “the constant struggle between civilization and nature” in the tropical city.
Okay then. Edition is moving, at least. Slowly very slowly but surely. Hooray!

After a Time-Out, The Ilikai Has Gotten It Together and Will Re-Open
Okay, so Hawaii's Ilikai (famous for the Hawaii Five-0 opening-sequence shots) fairly-suddenly closed last week, citing too-extreme operating costs. But now it seems to have taken a hot time-out, has gotten itself together and will re-open again. Yeah, alright.
According to reports, the hotel will "reopen as soon as practically possible under a new management team and operational structure." That is, iStar, the owners, said its subsidiary had "reached an agreement with the union representing workers at the hotel." Will it re-brand or will it open as the Ilikai still? It's looking like the latter we could book a room (for $97) on July 21st.
The hotel is going to go back and rehire about 50-ish employees under new terms, and drama, drama, drama but we're still sitting here wondering whether this is ever going to become Hawaii's Edition or not.
What's the deal here? Does anyone know? Someone clue us in Edition's website hasn't been updated in a long, long time.

Hawaii's Ilikai to Close; Will It Still Become an Edition Later?
The gigantic Ilikai Hotel, which "Hawaii Five-0" fans will recognize as the building Steve McGarrett stood on as the helicopter zoomed in on him during the show's intro, plans to cease operations in two days due to serious operating losses. According to the AP, iStar Financial said "203 hotel rooms in the nearly 1,000-unit property" will shut down on Thursday and guests with reservations will be accommodated elsewhere.
Per the AP article:
The company bought the hotel for $51 million at a foreclosure auction in May. In a statement, iStar said it hoped its subsidiary would be able to cut costs enough to allow the hotel operations to continue after it takes possession of the property Friday.
"Unfortunately, alternatives to reduce the operating losses at the hotel have not to date been achieved, thus leading to the decision to close the hotel," the company said.

Brands Born in the Recession: Where Are They Now?

It's no secret that the economy has had a massive impact on the hotel industry. Hotel openings have been delayed; construction has been halted on properties in development; jobs have been lost; room rates have been slashed but the last several years also saw a boom in the introduction of new brands and a handful of entirely new, supposedly game-changing segments (the "budget chic" pack, for example).
Naturally, with the introduction of each new brand came a wave of hype and some big, big expansion plans and then came the recession. Needless to say, those big plans changed.
Here's a look at the current state of some of those newer brands a progress report, if you will that outlines how many properties each brand had planned on when the concept was introduced, how many properties they've actually opened as of mid-2009, and, of course, how they're faring out there in the cold, brutal world.

Edition Chicago Back On?
Edition lives! Well, more accurately: the lovechild of Ian Schrager and Bill Marriott is reportedly on the way but there's no due date or sonogram shots to prove it.
After plans fell through for The Edition Chicago for Ontario Street in Chi-town, we kinda ditched the possibility of an Edition Chicago and kept a closer watch on other cities but now it seems Chicago's back on the ol' Edition development map.
Thanks to an awesome tipster, we caught wind of this Crain's report:
Developer Michael Reschke is doubling down on hotels in the Loop. Mr. Reschke is close to a deal to bring a high-end boutique hotel that could have as many as 245 rooms to the historic Roanoke Building at 11 S. LaSalle St., sources say.
The new hotel, an Edition, would compete with a project Mr. Reschke has under way just two blocks south at 208 S. LaSalle, where the chairman and CEO of Chicago-based Prime Group Inc. is developing a 610-room J. W. Marriott hotel.
And one more little piece of hot gossip, too: this same developer is reportedly proposing another luxe boutique hotel in the Windy City, a 237-room Hotel Gansevoort "at 508 N. State St., currently a surface parking lot just south of Rock Bottom Brewery."
A swanky boutique-luxe tag team like this would be nice, but is all this really possible right now? Meh, surely the Edition and Gansevoort people are just thanking their lucky stars they're not Denizen.

This Is What the 7-Star Edition Istanbul Will Look Like?

Um. No, thanks.
This is the rendering for the proposed Edition Istanbul which will be the first ever Edition Hotel to open in December from the seemingly unholy union of veteran hoteliers, Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager. The building is currently undergoing a 100 million Euro renovation from an office building into a 7-star hotel which will have 80 guestrooms, all suites.
Please, pretty please, spend a lot of that money on the interiors. Please.

Top That! Edition Hotel Will Open in Istanbul in December

UPDATE: A rendering of the building is now pictured after the jump.
South Beach, DC, Honolulu, Istanbul. What do all these destinations have in common? They have all, at one point or another, been designated the location for the very first Edition Hotel, the new luxury hotel collection spawned by Bill Marriott and Ian Schrager.
Last we checked, Edition Honolulu would open in sometime in 2010. The Edition DC project was starting to look rather unlikely and we've got no idea what happening with Edition South Beach.
But now there's been an announcement that Edition Istanbul will open before all these other jokers on Dec 15, 2009.
