Welcome to our regular feature, Pitch Your Hotel, where we let hoteliers, general managers and other hotel execs tell us on-camera what makes their hotels so different from all the rest. And believe us, the competition is fierce these days. So sit back, relax and listen to them explain why their hotels are worthy of your hard-earned dollars or rewards points.

Happy Earth Day! In honor of this very important day, we decided to have David Leventhal, the proprietor of Playa Viva resort in Mexico tell us what his new eco boutique hotel is doing, not just today but every day, to minimize the damage to the area's ecosystem and in fact, make it better than it was before by using several regenerative practices.

Playa Viva in the Juluchuca village near Zihuatenjo, is an all-inclusive resort situated on a mile of private beach and its 200 acres include an estuary, an Aztec archeological site, turtle sanctuary and a coastal forest and mangrove ecosystem that supports a wide variety of wildlife.

Yeah, this isn't your typical beach resort.

We need very little incentive to belly up to the bar and order a cocktail. But we'll especially drink up for a good Earth Day deal. During April, Morgans Hotel Group will plant a tree for every Treetini you order.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the hotel company partnered with VeeV for the tree-planting plan. The beneficiary of the trees will be monsoon-ravaged Tamil Nadu, India. According to VeeV, a single tree absorbs 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, omits enough oxygen for two people and recycles $37,000 worth of water. Morgans Hotel Group hopes to contribute 1,000 trees.

Best Green Hotels in the U.S. for Earth Day

April 22, 2009 at 12:41 PM | by | Comments (2)

Happy Earth Day! When we first did our Best Green Hotels report back in 2007, greening hotels was still sort of a new phenomenon. That was back when few hotels were moving past the little notes on the nightstand asking you to help conserve energy (and money) by only asking for new towels and sheets as needed.

But these days, hotels across America are seeking LEED certifications, introducing sustainable restaurants, in-room recycling programs and other environmentally-friendly initiatives. We've long been chronicling that sort of "green" news here, but in honor of Earth Day, we'd like to spotlight five U.S. hotels that really stand out as one shade greener than the rest.

Stayin Green' :: The Sustainability Manager at Boca de Iguanas

April 22, 2008 at 9:38 AM | by | Comments (0)

April 22nd is Earth Day so all this week we will be bringing you the latest news on Green Hotels. Got some eco-friendly news you wanna share? Let us know.

In the spirit of wishing everyone a happy Earth Day, here's a hotel that is definitely trying to do the right thing by the earth.

The partly-opened Boca de Iguanas Beach eco-resort in Mexico is doing its bit by appointing a Sustainability Manager to make sure the environment comes first.

Their Sustainability Manager, Lorena Vargas, comes from a line of organic farmers and then studied environmental biotechnology; good qualifications to keep this eco-resort truly eco. One of the neat things she's in charge of is the herb gardens that use heirloom seedlings (that means unmodified, "pure" strains of herbs, traced back over 150 years).

When the resort restaurant gets fully up and running these herbs should make a real difference to plenty of meals. Beyond that, the eco treatment gets into things like solar energy, gray water recycling and green on site sewage treatment.

The Boca de Iguanas hotel is offering a Romance package at the moment--three nights for $720. If you're not wanting romance, but just a green break, then now might be a good time to go. As they're still doing construction work to finish off the entire development, they're offering 40% off rack rates.
