Trump Trying To Duck Taxes On New D.C. Hotel Project

Where: 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW [map], Washington, DC, United States, 20004

We told you earlier this year that Donald Trump has designs of opening a hotel in Washington D.C., in one of the city’s beloved landmark’s, the Old Post Office.

Well, now he doesn’t want to pay taxes on the property, which could delay the project. The Old Post Office is a federal building, so property taxes aren’t required, but possessory interest tax--established in 2000 to tax companies operating on federal land—are still in order.

According to The Washington Business Journal, The Old Post Office's tax bill could start at $3 million a year. The article said Trump has been trying to get unspecified "relief" on the tax from the city—so far to no avail.

'Go Big or Go Home': Donald Trump Talks Expansion Plans with HotelChatter

Recently in Chicago for meetings, Donald Trump sat down with us at Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago for the chance to talk hotel bidness. Sitting across the table from Trump in the hotel’s newest board room, there was an eerie pull tugging us toward "Apprentice"-land, but we shook it off and stayed the course.

And anyway, we were far more captivated by the latest action in the Trump Hotel Collection and some very recent changes right in Chicago (including Sixteen’s new executive chef Thomas Lents and a new boat dock for Wendella's Chicago River Architecture Tours -- more on that coming soon).

We half expected Trump-is-bigger-than-thou answers and definitely got our share. But Mr. Trump did throw us a few unexpected curveballs, all of which suggest the king of bajillion-dollar hotel and real estate investments is now, more than ever, rockin’ the mantra, “go big or go home.”

If you're planning on visiting Toronto in the new year, you've got a new luxury hotel to consider--The Trump Toronto.

The latest biggest and bestest Trump hotel has just announced that they will open on January 31, 2012. It will be the only luxury hotel in the city's Financial District. And the rooms sure do look pretty! Perhaps because they were inspired by some luxe items--champagne and caviar. No, for real. The press release actually said that.

Since we love the bubbly (caviar not so much), we're curious as to whether or not the rooms will have champagne prices. We tried to use the hotel's convenient Facebook booking app, to suss out the room rates on opening night but an error message kept appearing. But no worries, the hotel's website was working just fine and we found Superior King rooms available for $495 CAD (or about $488 in USD) on January 31st. Sigh. We've got champagne tastes and a mid-service budget.

Looking for a quiet place to catch up on your coffeetable book reading? Head to Trump Soho's Library, a cozy lounge area wrapped in cherry blossom wallpaper, located on the mezzanine floor. Though you're welcome to bring your own reading material—or make use of the Library's own backgammon board—you're better off browsing the wall full of mint condition Taschen books.

From Helmut Newton to Gustav Klimt, it would take years to properly absorb all the stunning images contained in each heavy-as-a-brick volume. We had a soft spot for the Favourite Hotels publication, but hey, to each his own.

Donald Trump keeps getting dissed. First President Obama whips out his birth certificate to put to rest the Donald's lame "birther" conspiracy. Then Rosie O'Donnell snubs Trump by announcing she's choosing to boycott his Trump Chicago International Hotel and Tower.

O'Donnell was supposed to move into the Trump's penthouse suite for her daytime TV comeback for the OWN channel, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, which will be taped in Oprah's Harpo Studios. But she changed her mind.

Despite her long-standing feud with the Donald, Rosie O'Donnell plans to move into his Trump Chicago International Hotel and Tower.

O'Donnell will be making the penthouse suite in the Chicago hotel her home while she tapes her new OWN talk show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, in Oprah's soon-to-be-vacated Harpo Studios.

While you sat at home watching Lisa Rinna and Star Jones get catty and Richard Hatch push David Cassidy on the season-opener of Celebrity Apprentice last night, the show's D-list cast was whooped it up a day early, hanging at the Encore Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere on Saturday night.

Gary Busey, Lil Jon, 2010 Playmate of the Year Hope Dworaczyk and Real Housewives of Atlanta diva NeNe Leakes all kicked it at Surrender Nightclub. According to hotel officials, the only appearance Donald Trump was able to offer was in a prerecorded message: "Ladies and gentleman, this is Donald Trump. My man from The Celebrity Apprentice Lil Jon is on the turntable. If you're not partying, your ass is fired!"

There’s nothing quite like seeing a celeb mix with the hoi polloi, and when it’s a celeb like Donald Trump making beds, scrubbing basins and carrying people’s luggage to their rooms, in his own hotel, it makes us go a little bit squeegy.

Yup, the Donald is interviewed on Oprah today, and, as part of the deal, he was sent to work the most menial jobs at a Trump hotel (which from the snatches on the video we’re fairly sure is Chicago).

In the preview, we see the Donald taking a dog for a walk, plumping pillows, delivering room service and putting some elbow grease into cleaning that sink.

Saying a Prayer for Trump SoHo

GUESS THE HOTEL (FINALLY) REVEALED!

Our very own hotel Agent Zero returns with yet another review. Her not-real name is Myra Ellen and she's our version of Alex Goran who travels once a week for business, usually along the Eastern seaboard. Every so often, she'll be dropping in with her latest hotel and travel observations. In this episode, she loses her virginity to Donald Trump.

I was a Trump Hotel virgin. I admit that I’d always purposely stayed away, not interested in what the brand represents. So it’s a sort of long story about how I ended up there during a recent, one-night stay. But my experience is a shorter story: it was practically perfect.

There’s something wonderful about a new, luxurious, immaculate hotel. And Trump SoHo exemplifies this.

Trump Chicago Will Light Its Spire Tonight

The other week when we were taking in the sights of Chicago, we found our focal point always being drawn to the Trump Chicago International Hotel and Tower .

We couldn't help it! This hotel is, in typical Trump fashion, massive and showy, not to mention the sixth-tallest building in the world. It nearly dominates the skyline, especially with that spire on top. Coincidentally, we learned today that the hotel's spire will be lit up tonight for the first time.

Chicago Tribune's CityScapes blog reports:

Shortly after sunset at 8:29 p.m., newly-installed, energy-efficient LED lights will illuminate the spire atop the riverfront hotel and condominium tower, which is Chicago’s second-tallest building. They will color the 227-foot-tall spire in red, white and blue, honoring Independence Day. The color scheme will continue through July 11.

Trump International New York Reveals Its Big Facelift (Half Of It, Anyway)

Not to be outdone by its upstart sister downtown, the Trump International Hotel & Tower New York is now ready for its closeup. (We suppose we should say "again," since it was here first and all.)

The first phase of the hotel's $30-million renovation is complete, with the new-look rooms now open for business. The remaining half of the rooms will start getting their overhaul this weekend.

Like Trump Soho, the look is clean, classic but modern, and has been driven more by Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric than the man everyone calls Mr. Trump himself. (He did, however, insist on a few specific amenities. You can see which ones in our photo gallery...)

Trump Soho Employees and Bathrooms Are Gussied Up for Opening Day

We couldn't make the Trump Soho ribbon-cutting this morning which was attended by the family Trump (Donald, Donny Jr, Ivanka, and Eric) but we did have a hotel spy who just happened to be walking near the hotel about an hour before the 11am opening ceremony. Here is what he had to say:

The lobby is crawling with gussied up hotel employees who all seem to be nervously anticipating the 11 AM ribbon cutting. Donald Trump Jr. is in the house and appears to be hard a work strategically plotting the opening.

So many people and so much anticipation in the lobby we headed down stairs to the lower lobby and rest area in order to find some quiet.

The lower lobby restrooms (photo above) are pristine and ready to go, as are all the employees up stairs. Time to hand out key cards and cut the ribbon.

Interested in spending the night? We found rooms next weekend starting at $409 a night. Check out all the glorious room pics and photos here.
