DC Hotels Have Lost All Sense of Reality
November 18, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 7 Comments

You heard it here first, folks: D.C. hotels have officially gone, well, coco bananas. Apparently their zeal for inauguration events can’t be contained by normal, or even wacky, price tags, and the top hotel package for Jan. 20th has surged to an unthinkable $440,000 for four nights at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
Leading the loonies, the Omni Shoreham has crafted two package offerings billed to make you "Live Like a President" for the inauguration: the “44th Commander-in-Chief” ($440,000) and the “58th Inauguration” (at a “more reasonable” $58,000). With the presidential package, you might be getting your money's worth as it involves everything from private jet arrival to a jewelry shopping spree to presidential perfume and even a puppy of your choice on departure. Seriously, it's that cracked out.

If you’re like us, you might be having a tough time stomaching those hefty inauguration hotel rates being thrown every which way in D.C. (75G for a bulletproof suite at the Hyatt Regency? Come on, folks, we’d like to start keeping down solid foods one of these days.)
Fortunately, a roundup of affordable inaugural lodging (starting at $135!) just landed in our inbox. Courtesy of Shermans Travel Media, we present a few hotels in D.C. that haven’t totally lost their marbles. Just remember that vacant rooms are already few and hard to come by, so the following hotels are available and affordable, not necessarily convenient or particularly swank.

This inauguration, mimic the chiseled perfection of the weird statues at D.C.'s Hotel Rouge.
In a tizzy over the January blitz of glam balls, dinners, and parties in Washington, D.C. celebrating Barack Obama’s inauguration? We hear you, world. After all, Michelle isn’t the only one whose fancy dress matters come Jan. 20 (well, maybe it is, but whatever).
Kimpton totally understands your stress. But the hotel chain also thinks you should, uh, calm the eff down--ideally with their Ba‘Rock’ Star Treatment Package. Designed to help you do just that, the package’s perks pamper you head-to-toe in your guest room.

While Washington D.C. hotels prep for the 100% occupancy which will come with Obama's January inauguration, deals on rooms are selling out and fast. Wait too long and you'll be stuck blowing what's left of your 401K on one of the last remaining rooms in town, most likely an overpriced suite. Take for instance the Hyatt Regency Capital Hill, who is featuring two blow-out packages for any procrastinating rich people suffering from Obamania.

Perhaps you’ve heard we elected a new president last night? Uh, yeah, true story. And now that the bubbly (or hard liquor, depending on how you voted) has invoked its requisite day-after hangover, D.C. hotels are looking ahead to the city’s next big bash: Barack Obama’s inauguration in January.
When we think political events in D.C., it always comes back to a few classic hotels. Right on cue, the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel is offering an insanely luxe inauguration package. Emphasis on insane.

The Best Hotels in DC to Celebrate Election Night
November 4, 2008 at 9:30 AM | 1 Comment

Say what you will about Washington, D.C.’s image (you know the drill: too many overachieving government drones, not enough girls and guys who just wanna have fun). But make no mistake about it: Nobody parties quite like Washington when it comes to an election night. And considering the enchanting nature of this election in particular, tonight should--by all counts--be epic.
As they did during the debates, D.C. hotels are hosting scores of election night parties. We round up the best hotels to get your election groove on.

Hyatt Regency DC Unveils Spankin' New Lobby
October 31, 2008 at 10:49 AM | 4 Comments

Finally, the Hyatt Regency Washington DC has completed the renovations on their lobby, transforming the public spaces from staid Hyatt lobby into a $7 million, tech-savvy, social scene. Here's the press release description:
An awe-inspiring grand staircase awaits guests as they enter the lobby, paralleled with new glass paneled escalators connecting them to the registration level. Modern staffed registration pods and separate self check-in kiosks ensure an easy and efficient welcome. A sparkling custom chandelier draws attention to the lobby and lounge, where luxurious couches sprinkled with fluffy pillows await, inviting guests to unwind.
Here's what that description would look like if HotelChatter was doing PR: This place looks a heck of a lot better than it used to. Yeah, we got escalators too! Got a problem with that? And in keeping the place high-tech, we added some check-in kiosks. Don't know if you'll use 'em but we got 'em. And the couches in our lobby and lounge are so comfortable you can totally pass out here after drinking one too many after Election Night.
Room rates at the Hyatt start at around $219 a night.

Mayflower Hotel is Literally on the Road to the White House
October 29, 2008 at 9:22 AM | 0 Comments
Defying all reasonable odds, it looks like that election everyone keeps talking about might actually happen (finally!). And now that that fateful day is almost upon us, we can think of no better way to spend Nov. 4 then living it up at a fancy hotel in the heart of the Washington juggernaut.
Cue the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel. Yes, that Mayflower. Sitting less than a mile from the White House, the swank hotel has hosted its share of presidents--and future failed politicians!--over the years, even holding many an inaugural ball in its long and storied history since opening in 1925 (suite 776 is the site where FDR wrote the line, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself”; you might remember what happened in room 871).
And in the spirit of this crazy mixed-up election, the Mayflower is, well, doing it up Washington style. The “Road to the White House” package promises a Mayflower suite; an inaugural menu dinner at Café Promenade (or, if you prefer, you can order off another menu featuring Chicago- and Arizona-themed dishes); an Old Town Trolley sightseeing tour; and a glass DC monument replica souvenir. Price tag is $329 per night, and the offer runs now through Nov. 5.
Down in the hotel's classic Town & Country bar, election night returns will be the focus come Tuesday. Legendary bartender Sambonn Lek (pictured) will be serving a bevy of election drink specials (from Obama Rama-Tanqueray and Tonic to the McCain Mojito, plus plenty more). Free hors d’oeuvres will be served from 5:30 to 7:30. And certainly, plenty of bubbly will be on hand for celebratory toasts as the night wears on.

Willard InterContinental Washington Knows a Thing or Two About Relieving Stress
October 28, 2008 at 11:42 AM | 0 Comments

One of D.C.’s most quintessential hotels--the stately Willard InterContinental--gets new spa digs this week. Starting Friday, the Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa opens for business just two blocks from the White House, replacing the hotel’s former I Spa Center with a fancy new one. We hardly think the timing is coincidence.
Yes siree, come next Wednesday, we can think of a few high-profile individuals who would be wise to give the spa’s offerings a whirl. And some not-so-high-profile individuals too. Heck, we could all go for a little pampering after this election cycle.

Where to Get a Political Drink or Meal in DC's Hotels

The Postscript Bar at The Madison Loews Hotel
Yesterday's news of Article One restaurant at Washington, D.C.'s Hyatt Regency got us wondering:
What other political word-plays lurk in the monikers of hotel restaurants and bars in the nation's capital? It's election crunch time, after all.
A couple sprang to mind, but surely political themed spots must flow like business cards and Red Bull/Vodkas at a Georgetown networking event, right? Well, unless our research skills are lacking (which we assure you they're not!), D.C. hotels apparently have eschewed playing the political card in favor of more trendy names, usually of the one-word variety.
But fret not, for a few token spots do exist. Check them out after the jump.

Hyatt Regency DC's Article One 'Expands Dining Rights'
September 23, 2008 at 1:08 PM | 0 Comments

The gimmick behind the name of the soon-to-open restaurant and lounge at Washington, D.C.'s Hyatt Regency is a bit cheesy, yes, but we're suckers for a good pun and think it's cute in a groan-inducing way.
"Article One expands dining rights on Capitol Hill," the press release announces. Har har, we get it.
Just in case you aren't up to par on Constitutional fundamentals, Article One is the one that outlines the powers of Congress. So it's only fitting that a new restaurant near the Capitol would play to its potential customer base's egos.

Kimpton Wants You to Feel the Power
September 22, 2008 at 11:12 AM | 0 Comments

While we count down the gut-wrenching days until the big pick of the next leader of the free world, Kimpton Hotels want to remind you that you should totally plan a trip to the center of all the drama: Washington, D.C.
A "power trip," that is. Each of Kimpton's seven D.C. hotels is offering a "Portraits of Power" package to coincide with the Corcoran Gallery of Art's current big exhibit of the same name by photographer Richard Avedon.
Along with Kimpton's predictably well-appointed lodging, the package includes two VIP tickets to the art gallery (VIP=un-timed access) as well as a take-home catalog of the exhibit by German publishing powerhouse Steidl.
