Condé Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards Favor Killer Views, Weird Bathrooms

October 19, 2009 at 9:43 AM | by Heidi Atwal | 3 Comments

The stunning coastal views from Hotel Du Palais

They say the customer is always right, and we generally agree. PR pushes and clever marketing can often make a hotel sound better than it is, but leave it to a consumer to give you the inside track with merciless honesty. This is precisely why Readers Choice lists are more trusted than other carefully cultivated round-ups.

Last week, Condé Nast Traveler's unveiled its 22nd Annual Readers Choice Awards, a respectable overview of the best cities, islands, resorts, airlines, and other travel-related miscellany. It's the location-specific hotel and resort "Top Three" lists that caught our eye first, of course, but there were some questionable standouts as well.

Some of the top picks were self-evident, like Biarritz' Hotel Du Palais, honored by readers as the Top European Resort and called out by our discerning HotelChatter family for its stellar beach and pool views. Here on the mainland, meanwhile, Pebble Beach's Inn at Spanish Bay was named one of the Best U.S. Resorts. Having taken in the coastal surroundings along Monterey Peninsula's famed 17-Mile Drive last year, we can vouch for the Inn's luxury credentials.

Who Made The Condé Nast Traveler Hot List?

April 15, 2009 at 6:01 PM | by juliana | 1 Comment

It's that time of the year again folks when Condé Nast Traveler puts forth their annual Hot List.

The 140 hotels on this list include the three newest Los Angeles-area hotels--The Montage Beverly Hills, The London West Hollywood and the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills. In New York, The Greenwich Hotel and The Thompson LES are the stand-outs. Down in Miami, new hotels made the list as well like The Viceroy, The Fontainebleau and The Mondrian South Beach, Miami Beach, Fla.

In Europe, we were pleasantly surprised to see that Citizen M made the list and in Asia, several of the new hotels that opened in time for the Beijing Olympics made the list as well.

We're still going through the list as we type (it also includes restaurants, nightlife and spas) but already we've spotted a questionable selection. It's the Arctic Club Hotel in Seattle which will turn into a Doubletree in May and has downgraded itself from a four star hotel to a three star hotel. While an eye-pleasing place to spend the night, the hotel has also suffered from terrible service.

Hopefully, with a Hot List award under its belt and the expert staff training from Doubletree, this hotel will manage to find its footing.

Pick a Layover Stop for Michael Kinsley and Win a Free Island Hotel Stay

June 13, 2008 at 11:34 AM | by juliana | 13 Comments

That's right. We said "A Free Island Hotel Stay" and all you have to do is enter a comment on HotelChatter. For realz! Ok so we're slightly getting ahead of ourselves here but this is the 411.

Not all of us can enjoy a cushy layover in an airport hotel like the Grand Hyatt Dallas Fort Worth, but Condé Nast Traveler's Michael Kinsley is determined to find the best layover cities around the world in case we do get stranded somewhere with hours of nothing to do on our hands.

Kinsley actually completed this challenge back in 1988 but since that was before the internet, before boutique hotels became lodging staples and before low-cost-carriers took off, he's decided to make the trip again in September.

This time he wants suggestions from you readers about which airports he should check out in which cities and what he should do while he's there.

So we're teaming up with the Perrin Post and Jaunted to bring you this fun contest. If your layover suggestion gets picked for Kinsley's itinerary you could win a Palm Centro Smartphone. And if Kinsley finds your tip to be his absolute favorite, you could win a killer stay at The Regent Palms Turks and Caicos.

Keep reading to learn how to win these goodies.

Park City has been a bastion of the well-ski-heeled for eons and now their crown jewel property, The Sky Lodge, has been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler as one of only 20 properties in North America to make the annual 2008 Gold List.

To celebrate this honor, The Sky Lodge is offering a Sky Hot Ultimate Escape package, which includes two nights accommodations, complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast daily, choice of an Amatsu ultimate facial or Koi stone massage, and food & beverage credit of $100 per person, amongst other amenities. WASP Hotels: Play Aristocrat At Blantyre

Site Where: 16 Blantyre Road [map], Lenox, MA, United States, 01240
November 1, 2007 at 10:39 AM | by ced138 | 0 Comments

Say what you want about WASPs, they flock to hotel with high end service. While Blantyre in Lenox, MA, might look a bit like Arkham Asylum from the outside, inside it ranks number 26 on the 2007 Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards 2007 list of the 100 best hotels in the world. It scored a ranking of 91.8, and hey, one thing you are sure to see on a WASP coffee table is a copy of Conde Nast Traveler.

The resort consists of a main house filled with overstuffed chairs, fresh flowers, a light-filled music room, and rooms for private dining. Owner Ann Fitzpatrick Brown and her mother Jane decorated the central room with New England style art and antiques. Eight guest bedrooms and suites are located on the second floor. Four private cottages litter the grounds. Other amenities tailored to the WASP lifestyle are dotted throughout -- tennis courts, libraries, and fine dining.

One guest said:

Staying at the high end country manor of a long lost relative.

Our only question: Was this guest from Beacon Hill or the Upper East Side. Count on this place having top notch service for sure.

What Makes Oregon's Stephanie Inn So Great?

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 2740 South Pacific [map], Cannon Beach, OR, United States, 97110
October 30, 2007 at 2:32 PM | by pbb | 1 Comment

Now that we've had a chance to pour over Conde Nast's Readers' Choice Awards, we noticed an Oregon hotel that didn't pop up when we wandered through the Oregon Hotel Trail. The Stephanie Inn, say CNT's readers, is the third best hotel in the country, after the Chicago outposts of the Ritz-Carlton and The Peninsula.

So what makes it so special? Good question: CN Traveler doesn't spell out any details. And the survey is just a numerical ranking, leaving us curious as to what makes the Stephanie so praiseworthy. On Tripadvisor, reviewers come to a consensus:

This Inn is probably great if you can pay $600/night for a view room. It is also great if you like a lot of pretension. You will see more people here in slacks than in beach clothes and we were definitely the youngest people there.

The Stephanie certainly has a great view of Haystack Rock, but aside from that, we're just not seeing the appeal. Also, how can a hotel not have online reservations??
