Amazing Race 11 Hotel Update: Hot Shower in Petrohué

Petrohue Hotel and Cabanas

Petrohue Hotel and Cabana was more than likely the pit stop for last nights Amazing Race All-Stars.

This hotel was recently renovated, and most importantly affords guests stellar views across the lake of the snow capped volcano in the distance.

The property is extremely popular with bus tours, and these rolling suitcase pushing travelers tend to put a strain on the staff. If you are lucky enough to check in sans bus tour, you will be happiest. Another hint, ask for one of the newly renovated rooms.

Hopefully, the hotel was able to provide racers with a hot shower after they spent the better part of the afternoon white water rafting.

Chile's Surf Boutique Beach Hotel

A friend of HotelChatter took off for Chile late last week and is reporting quite a hotel find. Five hours south of Santiago, is a surfer's boutique resort called La Joya del Mar. There are only three villas at the resort, and on-site restaurant, and plenty of Chilean wine.

The owner, Dayna Del Duca, is also a surfer, so who knows, maybe a couple surf lessons can get thrown into the rack rate.

An Unusual Chilean Cabana

January 9, 2007 at 2:38 PM | by juliana | 0 Comments

God bless the travelers who don't fear where they will rest their head at night in a foreign country.

Like Julie and Nate, who went on a sightseeing trip of Chile in October and November, and found themselves along the Chilean coast, near Zapallar on Day 17. While they didn't see any hotels there, they figured any in this area would be pretty pricey. (The place reminded them of Malibu.) So they kept on trucking until they entered Maitencillo.

A couple of towns farther down, our dreams came true. We pulled into Maitencillo, a town with a myriad of hotel and cabaña options. We stopped to look at a few before seeing one that looked perfect. We pulled the car into the thatch-covered garage and stepped out to take a look. Opening the creaky gate we stepped into the perfect garden facing out to the beach. Not seeing anyone around, and fearing any guard animals, we quietly peeked into the cabins, before spotting a gardener at the corner of the yard.

The gardener turned out to also be the owner, and after a surprisingly short registration process (just write your name in the notebook!) we had an amazing room for the night. Or rather, we had an amazing kitchen, living room, bathroom and two(!) bedrooms.

The local supermarket (three short aisles) had everything we needed -- wine, salame, cheese, and crackers. We went back to the cabin to watch the sunset, enjoy our dinner, and savor our last night in Chile.

There's no name mentioned for this cabana but we're pretty sure it doesn't have a web site. Heck, it might not even have a name. So you'll have to do what Julie and Nate did which is probably more fun anyways.

Have a remote lodging option that you would like to share with fellow travelers? Then send it our way.

Beach, Buses and Good Coffee in Vina del Mar, Chile

Now, back to South America. For the ideal beach resort break in Chile, the Viña del Mar area is definitely one of the top spots. And today we're getting our tips on where to stay from Gene Smith's Atomiq blog. Last month Gene stayed in the cheerful Hotel Monterilla near the coast:

We booked the Monterilla at the last minute by text message, and it turned out to be a great starting point for exploration. We had easy access to South Vina and the microbuses to Valparaiso, and we were two blocks from the beach and one from the casino. They also serve a good drip coffee with breakfast (and after a few days of Nescafe, that's something I could really appreciate).

No complaints there. Hotel Monterilla's owners boast that "personal attention is our philosophy", so if they ever start to let you down, just point this out: it screams at you in all caps--twice--on their website.

You Got (Thermal) Mud on Your Face

While winter is settling in across the United States, summer's high season is just commencing below the equator. At one of Chile's most decadent thermal spas, this might translate to a sunny afternoon spent glooping around in a vat of volcanic mud, followed by a deep tissue massage, a robust glass of Chile's finest cabernet sauvignon, and a nap.

Situated in the country's famous Lake District, nestled in the Andes Mountains, and a two-hour flight from the capital of Santiago, the Termas Puyehue Resort could be considered water heaven. There are indoor and outdoor pools, hot and cold pools, pools with bubble beds, pools surrounded by native flowers, baths that can be "complemented" by salts, herbs, or essences, vichy showers, thermal water facials, autoregulated hydromassage tubs - not to mention showers in the guest rooms.

In case you haven't had your fill of H20, across the street you can rent a boat for a ride around the sprawling Lake Puyehue.

More on the Chilean water resort after the jump.

If you often find yourself careening recklessly down a black diamond with snow covering up your goggles and totally unable to spot your hotel or lodgings, consider booking the HotelPortillo at the Portillo Ski Resort in Chile.

Its bright yellow color will help you navigate your way home. As for staying inside, beware there are no in-room TVs:

Our rooms do not have TV. Instead, we encourage our guests to take part in our many activities, to utilize the facilities, and to disconnect from the day-to-day routine.

However, the rooms do come with telephones, hairdryers, and WiFi access throughout the hotel. Just remember if you want to ski the Portillo Ski Resort, Chile is like Australia and the ski season here is from Jun 17 to Oct. 7.
