The Martha Washington Hotel in NYC is Now Open to Everyone

Back in May, when King & Grove Hotels changed their name to Chelsea Hotels, in honor of their flagship property, we noticed that the King & Grove New York on East 29th Street would be reopening soon as the Martha Washington Hotel. Lo and behold, that day has come.

The 265-room, full service hotel has reverted back to its original name, used when it first opened in 1905, but its original purpose--a hotel exclusively for women--has since changed to a hotel "Exclusively for Everyone."

The guest rooms at the NoMad hotel start at a "Cozy" size, which is essentially a twin bed stuffed into a 140-sq.ft. room. The "Standard" room has 175-sq.ft with a queen bed, while the "Deluxe" size has a king bed wedged into a 300-sq.ft. room. The suites are a little more generous with their space but not much. And as far as we can tell, the room decor has not changed much since the hotel was the Hotel Lola.

If staying here, you'll probably spend most of your time downstairs at Veronica's lobby bar and lounge or at Marta (no "h"), the new Italitan restaurant from NYC restauranteur Danny Meyer of Union Square Hospitality Group (and of Shake Shack fame.) But should you be too exhausted to leave your room, Marta does do room service.

Rates for the Martha Washington Hotel start at $335 a night for a standard room with a queen bed.

This New Manhattan Hotel Is Getting Ready To Riff On 1980s Nostalgia

Go To The Hotel's Web
Site Where: 300 West 30th Street [map], New York, NY, United States, 10001

Shhh. There’s a new hotel – or hotel chain – gearing up to hit Manhattan, but it’s preparing under the radar. Why? Our best guess is that they don’t want any riff raff hearing about it.

Or any raff, at least. Riff is just fine – fitting, in fact. Because the chain will be called Riff Hotels, and the first property – opening next month – will be Riff Chelsea, a “musically-inspired” 44-room hotel at W30th St and 8th Avenue.

The creative theme is in its genes – formerly the Chelsea Star (indeed still the Chelsea Star for now – it’s remaining open, while being converted room by room, and will be officially rebranded in August), it was a pulling point for artists in the 1980s. Madonna stayed here, and the hotel rumor has it that Lucky Star was inspired by the hotel.

The Chelsea Star looks pretty non-descript right now, but as the Riff, the hotel will be channeling the 80s: the lobby will house pictures of early New York Madonna by Richard Corman, there’ll be a performance space curated by artist collective Chashama, and rooms will be “retro-contemporary”, designed by Steed Hale, who worked on Studio 54. We don’t have pictures or even renderings yet, but you’ll need sunglasses at the ready if they’re anything like the hotel is promising:

Bold colors and eye-catching graphics will make every guest room different, with pop-art photography, edgy graphics, and bold, buzzy Jonathan Adler wallpaper.

King & Grove Hotels Have Changed Their Name To...

May 22, 2014 at 8:33 AM | by | Comments (0)

King & Grove has decided to ditch the street names it was originally founded after, and will re-brand its collection of boutique hotels under the star property in its portfolio--The Chelsea Hotel.

Starting today, all King & Grove hotels will be a part of the new Chelsea Hotels. The tag line is: "Different kinds of more. Different kinds of less."

“We wanted a name that reflects what we stand for as a brand, and Chelsea Hotels does just that. In the spirit of our most iconic property, Chelsea Hotels welcomes all to become part of a community rooted in culture, creativity and shared experiences,” said Edward Scheetz, CEO of Chelsea Hotels, in a statement.

But its not only the hotel group that's getting a new name. The King & Grove Williamsburg Hotelwill now go by the name McCarren Hotel + Pool while the King & Grove New York will go by the name Martha Washington. The original King & Grove property, Ruschmeyer's in Montauk will stay the same. Chelsea Hotels will also unveil the Astor Hotel on Lafayette street in 2016.

The mysterious Flatiron Hotel has been keeping us guessing for quite some time now. The 64-room ghost building has barely had any developments since last September—yet people are still as curious as ever. Like one Danish reader, who writes:

Hello Hotelchatter.

I enjoy your advice and stories regarding hotels around the world everyday. Now I need your advice for my trip to New York. 4 - 14 september. Do you, in your opinion, think it is safe to book Flatiron Hotel Toshi for my dates? Will it be open by then? Bookit.com has a cheap-cheap price for my stay, but if the hotel or staff is not ready.......

Please find it in your heart and busy scedule to answer moi.

Kind regards from Copenhagen

How To Score The Room You Want At The Eventi Hotel

Our friend Virginia might have been wait listed at The Eventi but there is a way to get the room you want when there is availability.

Let's get this out of the way right up front, Eventi Hotel, Kimpton's giant ground up half condo half hotel tower is in no man's land as far as New York tourists are concerned. It isn't in Times Square, though you can walk there in no time, and it isn't in Union Square, though you can hoof it there just as fast. Eventi is technically in Chelsea, but if you are looking for a plethora of bars and restaurants right outside your window, you won't find it here.

However, Eventi has a courtyard, bar with a giant screen, and a take out place virtually built into the hotel. Don't like to be so agoraphobic? Ace Hotel New York is a block or two away and houses the tasty Breslin as well as a cool after work lobby bar..

The Hotel Americano first hotel from Mexico's Grupo Habita is set to open in New York's Chelsea neighborhood sometime this spring and as you probably know, HotelChatter has been keeping some close tabs on the construction.

Last month, it looked like there was still a lot of work to do but thanks to these photos snapped by the erstwhile PBB we're getting a better idea of what this new hotel will look like.

Fashion 26 Becomes Hilton in Yet Another Reflagging

Turns out launching a hotel brand is hard: The Fashion 26, an "independent" that was secretly a Wyndham before being temporarily operated by Highgate Hospitality has now been reflagged as a Hilton—and during Fashion Week no less! The new name for the ever-changing 280-room property on 26th and 7th Avenue is Hilton New York Fashion District, which will sound hilarious to anyone who actually lives in New York and knows that such a neighborhood doesn't really exist.

Then again, perhaps we're being too cynical? Creating neighborhoods around hotels is a New York hospitality trademark (see The Hotel Chelsea, The Hudson, The Ace). Maybe in five years we'll all be hanging out in the Fashion District, talking about how cupcakes are so five years ago?

As for what changes at the hotel, the company line is "not much," and those aforementioned free cupcakes will remain. An added asset for guests now that Hilton is running the show? Clocking (and redeeming) HHonors points on stays. A great surprise, indeed.

The first hotel outside Mexico for stylish boutique brand Grupo Habita is still well under construction in Chelsea in the shadow of the High Line part dos. We grabbed these photos today, which show the glassed-in elevator shaft, lots of work remaining to be done—and what appear to be the makings of balconies overlooking 27th Street.
